I don't recall seeing this mentioned on the toasters list. Netapp has a new (12 Aug 2002) white paper on Linux NFS client tuning, done by Chuck Lever. http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3183.html I think you can get to this paper without NOW access. The paper is self-described as: This report provides advice for getting the best from your Linux NFS clients in an environment that includes Network Appliance filers. You'll learn what level of performance to expect from your Linux systems. You'll learn how to tune your Linux clients and diagnose performance and reliability problems. We'll recommend software levels and hardware combinations that are known to work well. Hi Bruno, We ran Solaris 2.6 with ASE 12.0 for a while with the devices on our F820 and F880 but ran into some major performance issues. Mostly related to network throughput. Once we moved to 2.8 and SUN 2.0 Gigabit NICS, these problems disappeared. I am not a sybase expert, but I know we have a separate volume that we perform sybase dumps to. We ftp the dumps daily to a F820 at our Disaster Recovery site. This process works fine as long as we have bandwidth available on the WAN. We would have preferred to use Snapmirror, but that requires ASE 12.5 and a special quiesce procedure. You can find more on this at the NetApp NOW website, I think the article is a whitepaper on Sybase Disaster Recovery. Volume sizes

I just added two DS14 shelves to an F840. I have 24 of the disks available for a new volume(s). Would it be better to create 2 volumes of 12, 72G drives or 1 volume of 24, 72G drives. The filer is used as a cache for storing radiology images. No backups are required and there are no snapshots required either. I have two hot spares available.

Password recovery in a cluster

Anyone know if the method outlined in 3.0.1379841.2577228 (http://now.netapp.com/Knowledgebase/solutionarea.asp?id=3.0.1379841.2577228) for password recovery is supposed while in a cluster? I'm thinking there may be a caveat, because the recovery procedure involves writing to the boot blocks of the filer's drives, which in a failover situation is owned by the partner. Cluster software, homegrown scripts or manual failover for oracle /netapp env -- any real world processes people want to share?

Currently our failover process is a manual one based on the scenario that our primary production server has gone down and the netapp server and database is ok. The process is tested and works very well. The cons is that its not an automatic solution but we can get the system back up in less than 30 minutes after being alerted at random any time of the day. Interested in what others are doing. art

limit to number of files in a directory

Hi all, are there any limits to the maximum number of files (or subdirectories) a Netapp NFS mounted directory can handle? In our case (if it matters) we are looking at Linux 2.4.18 using NFS v3/tcp to a Netapp running 6.1.2R3. We are thinking of a directory with 500,000+ files in it. Hello, I would like to know can netapp filer attach to our Solaris server as a DiskArray. Here is our goal: We have to Solaris servers will run Oracle database. These two server will have Veritas Server Clustering and also will need a set of DiskArray attach to them. Veritas will control these disk as it own volume. 2 part tape question

Part the First: I have a Vixel switch that is attached to the library via fiber. The filers plug into the Vixel and each filer sees all 6 drives, but not each other. I can assign all 6 drives to a single filer but I can't assign them to any of the others. I know this sounds like SSO but it's really much simpler. All I want is to use a robotic drive number for 2 different filers. I'm not looking for NBU to figure out anything or manage connections. The goal is to stagger schedules and allow each filer to use all 6 drives when it's their turn. Part the Second: Has anyone done a multi-tape snapmirror using robotics? Currently I have to unmount the media and mount a new media for snapmirror to finish. I would like to snapmirror a 400gb volume to tape (it would use about 7 tapes) without having to do a manual unload/load at the end of each tape. netgroup file ?

hi we are migrating from NIS to LDAP as OnTap does not support native LDAP I have setup a NIS-LDAP gateway. I plan to use that gateway as NIS server to let the filer grab users UIDs. My question concerns the "netgroup" file that is actually propagated from our old NIS server, the NIS gateway is not able to propagate that map. Should I put it in the /etc directory of the filer to be used by it ? according I modify the nsswitch.conf file like the following netgroup: files thanks -- Frank Bonnet

We are using a Sun system running Solaris with attached tape drives to backup a filer remotely using the "dump" command. If you fill up a tape, it will not go to the next tape in the Sun Autoloader and it fails. We have been trying to use several different ways of putting in the tape device to get it to continue to a second tape with no luck. NetApp seams to be at a loss to how to do it as well. Here are the commands we have tried: (issued from the Sun system "jaguar") (/dev/rmt/2cn is the tape drive in the autoloader set to sequencial) rsh landrover dump 0uf jaguar:/dev/rmt/2cn,/dev/rmt/2cn /vol/vol0/processes rsh landrover dump 0uf jaguar:/dev/rmt/2cn,,jaguar:/dev/rmt/2cn /vol/vol0/processes There are several others. Netapp hard drive tests

Does anyone actually know what tests Network Appliance hard drives get put through before they get the NetApp stamp of approval? Someone mentioned they reject like 30% of their drives. Is that true? Because that number seems pretty high to me. If it so, I would like to know exactly what tests they use (and what figures they use) to determine whether or not to reject a drive. Steve
