Service Usage information in Autosupport e-mails

I've tried looking around and haven't been able to find what the precise information is that's contained in the 'SERVICE USAGE' section of a netapp's auto-support e-mail that filers send out. Here's some example output so you guys know what I'm talking about: ===== SERVICE USAGE ===== Service statistics as of Sun Oct 6 08:46:15 GMT 2002 System (UP). R100-Filer disaster scenario

Hi all, does anybody know, how fast is a R100 ? We want to build an environment, which reduce the downtime in case of a disaster. Following in mind, some Netapp Filers do a SnapMirror over a WAN-connection to a R100. Beside the R100 is a spare-system which could replace any production-filer. In case of a disaster we are able to copy the volumes to the spare-system and replace it with the broken filer. This should be much faster then a full restore from a local tape. I am talking about 0.5TB - 1.5TB per remote filer. We also would do only a tape-backup from the R100, no local tape drives in the remote offices. Questions: - What is the real read-performance of a R100? - What is the fastest way to duplicate the broken volumes from the R100 to the spare-system? volcopy ? ndmpcopy ? something else ? - How long does it take to copy a 1TB volume to another filer. - Does anybody have something like above described ? dump timeout

Hi, We are running multitape dump to a locally attached ATL L200 library with SDLT drive. Once dump has written to the end of the, the tape gets unload, the new tape gets loaded and the dump continues. A small percentage of our tapes for some reason take longer than others to get loaded into the drive. But it looks like dump has hardcoded timeout, or hardcoded number of tries, after which it thinks the next tape failed to load, and backup aborts. From the common sense viewpoint, dump should ( at least optionally ) wait/keep trying indefinitely for the next tape to load, so that an admin doesn't lose time in this case, and in case where not enough tapes were loaded in the library to begin with. Does anyone know of a solution for this issue? Thanks Igor

I installed 3rd party Seagate drives ST173404FC drives in my F720 filer running Ontap 6.3. I updated the /etc/qual_devices with the one from the website. However the filer still complains about these disks. It says: Disk 8.8 ("SEAGATE ", "ST173404FCCereva", "FAD5") could not be qualified Device qualification failure detected. Refer to the qual_devices man page for information on updating device qualification data. All devices MUST be qualified for continued system operation. On all of my netapps running a newer version of ONTAP the command worked and I got the following resonse: snapmirror is not licensed but on my F740 running NetApp Release 5.3.5R2 it doesn't recognize that command. What is the way with the older versions of ONTAP to verity that snap is turned off? It's more or less "safe" if you are dealing with passive (differential) interfaces. If dealing with active (single-ended) interface I like to be sure that the device with the far end terminator is powered down. In any case, all the devices in the string have to be idle when you break the chain. SCSI controllers get most upset when they lose sight of their terminator while a bus transaction is taking place. As long as there is no signal (ex- scanning SCSI card or Tape I/O) going down the SCSI line while the cables are being swapped I have never had a issue. Did anybody else have problems with this? It runs fine on a Solaris9 server but when I tried to install it on one of our linux utility servers here the rateup program would core dump. It's RedHat 6.2 running kernel 2.2.19-6.2.1smp, i686.. I would prefer to run it on the linux server so any help would be really appreciated. Thanks Dan

I'm trying to bring up a new interface on a pci nic card inside my F740. Without being at the netapp is there any way to see if the nic card is seeing a good link status. AIT-3 drives on a F760 with LVD SCSI

I am in the process of upgrading my Qualstar library to AIT-3, and I thought it would be a good idea to ask if anyone is using AIT-3 on a filer? I am installing LVD SCSI cards on my 2 filers to connect directly to the drives, and I want to make sure everything will be compatible. Today the library has AIT-2 drives connected to the filers via SCSI converters. We are running OnTap 6.2.1 for the AIT-3 support. We are using Veritas Netbackup DC 3.4 with NDMP for backup. Dear Toasters, I could not find any answers on NOW site/Sun Site... Dose anyone had experience SUN df command displayed "-1" files field ? Environments: F720 w/ONTAP 5.3.6R2 Sun220 w/5.7 Symptoms: Although transmitted to NetApp by ftp. In rarely case , write failed. At this time If the result of df is seen It is -1. In other hosts (HOST-B), it is displayed normally. Self contained shelves moving between filers

If I have a storage shelf with a raidgroup and a volume (say vol3) on it (completely self contained), can I take the shelf and plug it into a different filer and use the volume? Same question but with multiple shelves (assuming that I move the whole set)? <scw> ----- Stephen C. Replacing a SCSI cable

Hi, what is the current recommendation as far as replacing a SCSI cable connecting the filer and the tape library? Does filer need to be rebooted, or is it safe to hot-swap the cable? Thanks Igor

tape duplication

Hi, I have 2 filers, DLT7000 tape drive attached to one of them, and SuperDLT tape drive attached to the other. What I need is to copy a DLT tape in dump format onto an SDLT tape, but I don't have enough disk space on either filer to restore the source tape. Does there exist a trick which would accomplish that? Thanks Igor

CIFS Directory Sizes

Toasters, Anyone know of any good programs to use to check the directory size of a CIFS share that the administrators do not have access to? We use Security Explorer to change the security of shares where we have this situation. We are familiar with diruse, which works great, but will only run under the context of the user executing it. Sybase Backup server and filer

We are testing how to backup our Sybase db (dump) on a NFS mounted partition (with a filer). We simulate an NFS problem (by disconnecting the network link) during the backup, so the Backup Server falls in sleep state, the transaction log continues to increase and then Sybase tries to backup it, whereas the Backup Server is still sleeping. During the test, Sybase doesn't detect that the NFS server was not responding. How can I configure (is it possible) my Sybase to detect the problem and tell the backup server to stop instead of falling in sleeping mode ? How can I configure my Sybase server to backup my log transaction in another place (locally) in this case ? Is there an other strategy to backup our database on a filer ? NFS tuning parameters for AIX version 5.1

Have anyone installed Netapp Filers with IBM rs6000 server in a very high oltp environment. We are runing AIX version 5.1 . Netapp site does not have any recomendations for AIX . Can someone provide us with the recomended setings for NFS parameters on AIX version 5.1 & also recomended pathes for NFS , gigabit card & kernel for performance. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
