Paul, It sounds like you are running the Crossroads router in "Fibre Channel to SCSI Mapping Mode" of auto. Change the mode to "Indexed" and this should fix your problem. The mapping mode determines how the targets behind the router (i.e. tape that are attached to the SCSI side of the router) are seen by Fibre Channel hosts on the network. Specifically, the various addressing modes determine how Fibre Channel LUNs are mapped to the SCSI peripherals on the router, and how that mapping can change when you reboot or reconfigure the router. You normally want to use indexed mode to ensure that particular target/luns on the SCSI side of the router are persistently presented as the same LUNs on the Fibre Channel side of the router, regardless of whether devices have been removed on the SCSI side or were turned off when the router booted. It would help if we could permanently assign the devices to the tape drive LUNs on the filers. BTW, we have received suggestions regarding using the Netapp "storage alias" and "storage unalias" commands. However, since the Galaxy backup software relies on the actual device names (i.e. rst0l, nrst0l, urst0l, etc.) this hasn't helped us so far.

We are currently trying to implement a SAN backup solution involving several F840 (ONTAP 6.2R2, latest FW) and R100 (ONTAP 6.2.1, latest FW) filers, a Brocade Silkwork 3800 switch (kernel 5.3.1, fabric OS 3.0), a Crossroads 10000, an ATL P7000 tape drive library with 8 SDLT drives, and Commvault Galaxy software (4.1.0, Build 26). We have tried firmware versions 4.03.16, 4.03.17, and 4.19 on the Crossroads 10000. You said you had more than one volume ?. Were the disks all added at the same time ?. That is, you have not added a disk to an existing volume?. Is the activity read or write activity or a mix ?. Can you post up a sysstat output ?. Try using 'statit' which will indicate if a specific disk is being hammered. Hey Clarence, Filer MRTG is great, we run it now even with Datafabric Manager running as well. It isn't very good for performance analysis but great for monitoring filesystem usage and particularly snapshots if you are doing any snapmirroring. How many disk shelves have you got? How many FCAL's you got? Running any database devices on the filer? What size raid groups have you got? Especially for databases. Running any gigabit interfaces on Sun boxes? Was the system running fast for a long period then suddenly performance dropped or has it been gradual degradation? Does a netdiag -v report any unusual NFS or application errors? I have many more questions as I am going through something similar right now. Hopefully we can help each other. Hi Pawel, We have an F880 (6.2.1) with about 10-20 Sun boxes connected to ours. We are experiencing the same type of slowdown and sysstat readouts. Our database volumes are running particularly slow. I am working with NetApp now to resolve this. I run 6.2.1 on F820 and I have bunch of Sun boxes ( around 60 ) who do NFS mounts. The filer has more than one volume and sometimes during the day the output of systat -x shows 100% disk util for a couple of minutes. 1. Is there a way to find out which volume/disk is causing bottleneck ? 2. Is there a way to find which client is causing the load to spike ? 3. Can disk util be monitored via SNMP ? Pawel, Have you grown your volumes lately? If so, how many disks did you add to the volumes when you grew them? I have seen customers who have volumes that are at 90%-95% and they add one or two disks to increase the disk space for the volume. What this does is creates a hot spot where any new writes going to those volumes only gets written to the 1 or two disks which were added = bad performance because WAFL is not able to stripe across all the disks in the volume. What are the best options to use when trying to get the best performance and good stability out of a Solaris8 server mounting volumes via nfs from a F740/F760? Thanks Dan I've already made sure that the network connection for the Solaris server is 100MB fdx.

NetApp NDMP backup session benchmarks

Fellow Members, We are looking at upgrading our backup environment having added a couple of NetApps F880 filers with +/-10TB of data recently. We already have a SAN storage island, so are looking at SAN attaching a STK L700E jukebox (housing either LTO drives or possibly 9940B drives), and linking the NetApp filers to the SAN also, thus allowing us to associate drives with Filers as needed. Initially, we then expect to use Legato to control NDMP sessions to enable the dump of the NetApp volumes to tape. My question is whether their are other Networkers who have similar conceptual solutions who can give an idea of the read/write throughputs we could expect for a single NDMP session, and what limitations/drawbacks there are when using NDMP. Hello - new (old) F630 owner

We recently became caretaker of a new to us F630. This unit has 6 disk shelves, each shelf loaded with 9GB drives. We had NetApps come in and set it up (recertify it) after it was shipped to us from GB (we are in Ohio). Everything went fine except we had a couple of bad power supplies and a bad SCSI cable to one of the shelves. We are now looking at maintaining the hardware ourselves. We are planning on securing some spare parts and build a small hot spare system from which we can pull parts as needed. Anyone have any suggestions as new owners of a F630? We have lots of Unix and PC experience, but this is the first hands on with a NetApps. (BTW: why is NetApps so secretive with info on their web site? Simon, Did you change anything on your network recently? Are you doing auto negotiation on the Ethernet ports on the Netapp? If so, force them and the switch port to 100Mbit full duplex (unless you are using Gigabit Ethernet which you will leave as Auto negotiate). Run "ifstat -a" on the Netapp and see if you have excessive errors/collisions on a interface. Run tracert from the machines having slow access to the Netapp and see if they are going through any unusual hops. Check the All Log Entries report in NetBackup and syslog on the filer to find out why the tape drives are being downed - this should not be happening. You can't prevent NetBackup from downing drives, but you can change the number of errors that will cause a drive to be downed (3 by default). Search the KB on the Veritas web site for details. Hi everyone, Does any one ever encounter this before? We have 2 tape drives connected to 2 Network Appliance Filer. It goes down randomly every day and the following error msg is recorded in the application event log. We are running Veritas Netbackup Data Centre Ver 3.4.1 on Windows 2000 ? But when we "up" the drive in device monitor, the backup completes successfully. Does anyone know where to set on the filer or NBU to prevent the drive to go down?

CIFS access slow

Hi, I have sen over the last few days a marked decrease in CIFS performance from our 760. We have a shell for the PC (TCSH) and if I perform an ls -l on a top level share mapped to a network drive on the PC I get a 30-40 second delay before the list is returned. I saw several lsa lookup errors last week, but at the moment these are all clear - but still the performance is poor. We use UNIX style qtrees, and have both WINS and NIS services. Any ideas? migrating filers between windows 2000 domains

Hi, Has anyone sucessfully migrated filers from Windows 2000 Mixed mode domain eg. abc.com to a newly created Windows 2000 Native Mode domain eg. "gbc.com". We have migrated all the users from abc.com to the new domain gbc.com. Migrating computers is also underway sucessfully using aelita DMW tools. Now as far as we tried on a filer version 6.1.1 ,migrating filers between windows 2000 domains deletes all the shares and corrupts all the permissions. Wondering what will happen to ACLS of Terabytes of data. SIDHist of all the users are being maintained while they were migrated.. Only these toasters are left.. Netapp documentation also doesnt help much except for telling about about support for Windows 2000 Active Directory native mode in regarsd to migrating between domains. Oracle 9i RAC + Red Hat + Netapp

We are currently running Oracle on Sun on Netapp 760s, and considering moving to RAC on Red Hat Linux. Network Appliance has a Tech Report on configuring RAC on Netapps, located at: http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3189.html Is anyone currently doing this? Any gotchas not documented in this document? Do you _have_ to be running Netapp 880s at Ontap 6.1.3R2, or is that simply the latest and greatest? Veritas Netbackup 4.5 - browsing filer resources over NDMP

Last two days we spent on configuration of Veritas Netbackup 4.5 for NDMP backups of NetApp filer. It is not simple task because documentation on this topis is very obscure. However we managed to work NDMP backups and restores in two different scenarios. But there is one feature unclear for me: Defining backup policies one should type source of backup (AFAIK only volumes and qtrees are allowed). There is browse button that should enable browsing of filer resources but it does not seem to work. Sniffer shows that NB is trying to locate resources over Veritas proprietary TCP ports not NDMP. Is there any way to make it using NDMP or the only way is to type the full path manually?
