CIFS and LDAP support

Hi Actually we use samba servers to let our windows users access to their data, samba servers act also as wins servers and PDC servers. Samba use NFS to access the filer. I know this is FAR to be the best practice, but Ontap still does not support native LDAP authentication ( Openldap ). I have requested several times in this list WHEN Ontap will support LDAP auth but never received a positive answer so I repost my request ... I actually runs 6.3.1 Ontap version. PS : I do not wants to use M$ Active Directory as our LDAP server runs under UNIX of course. Thanks for any news. -- Frank Bonnet

Experiences with filers running NFS over long distance

Hi All, I'm wondering if anyone out there has experience with running NFS with filers over long distances - of the order of 10s of KM. I'm particularly interested to find out experiences when bandwidth was and wasn't an issue. For example, running at 34Mbs/155Mbs against running over GigE. Was tweaking the NFS request size required? Was TCP used and if so was it because pkt loss was impacting NFS performance? Did latency become an issue? cloning of filer config

Hi, does anybody have some experiences with the cloning of a filers config? What exactly are the configurations that are cloned? We have two F840 and one of them is used to snapmirror every volume of his partner except the root volume. Can we use the clone command to sync the configuration files on both filers? If we need to break up the mirrors in case of emergency, the filer should be able to act as an exact clone of the source filer with all nfs and cifs exports, options, permissions etc. Interfaces of course are already configured the same. As I understand it, with windoze systems, when you modify a file, you completely rewrite it as a new file. Those blocks that belonged to the "old" file are maintained in the snapshot inode listing. This is not an issue with Unix (As I understand it). So with file folding, the contents of the active file system are compared against the most recent snapshot (only) to determine if blocks are duplicates and can be freed. netgroup and user field

Hi I noticed that the "user" field is ignored by Ontap in the netgroup file according I use "files" only in the nsswitch.conf file. (machine,user,domain) ^^^^ Is there some plan at Netapp to support this field in the future to let only some users access to the filer from certain machines ? Thanks -- Frank Bonnet

My question about file folding (after reading about it here and on NOW)... Why would a block end up in a snapshot if it is the same as the previous snapshot? Isn't the point of snapshots only to save the 'old version' of blocks that have been changed? OK, second question, does it only check the most recent snapshot or does it drill through all existing snaps? NFS Lock Performance

I'm hitting a filer very hard with NFS lock/unlock calls. Although the ops/second is still comfortably below what I've seen it do before (with more read/write ops), I'm seeing it occasionally take many seconds to return from a non-blocking lock attempt, or from an unlock call. I theorise based purely on ignorance that I might be soaking the lock manager. Is there any tuning I can do (e.g. add more threads)? Regards, Edward Hibbert.

File folding describes the process of checking the data in the most recent snapshot, and, if it is identical to the snapshot currently being created, just referencing the previous snapshot instead of taking up disk space writing the same data in the new snapshot. Follow up to Netware to NetApp/CIFS migration question I posted

I posted a question to find out any information on migrating Netware file permissions to CIFS. I did not get any in-depth feedback, so I want to share what I have learned, and see if anyone has done this. Basically I have a large Netware 4.x environment, as well as a NT4 domain. All clients (95/NT/2k) authenticate on both NDS and NT4 domain when logging on. Due to time and budget restraints, I need to migrate data with security intact, from Netware to NT/Filer. In a perfect world this would be a great time to review security and start from the ground up, but this is not possible on this project. Also, scripting the security migration (file permissions) is beyond what I would deem reasonable for a shell script. My first thought was to dump the Novell permissions to a text file and use cacls or the like to reset them. Novell permissions are just too different. It would take too long (for me) to write and test, and there is a proven solution out there. After doing some research it seems the best tool for the job is FastLane NDS Migrator (now owned by Quest software). The limitation is that it only goes from NDS to Active Directory. Perfect if you have AD, but we don't. The answer given to me by Quest that I will be testing and letting the group know about is migrating straight from NDS to the filer, but with a AD "proxy domain". So I build an AD server, install NDS Migrator and SQL server, and then import my users/groups from my existing domain. Once I have an AD Domain with my users and groups, I use FastLane NDS Migrator to move data and migrate security from NDS to AD, with the data being put on the filer. NDS OUs become AD Global Groups. Data transfer speed is limited due to the fact that all data will go from the Netware server, through the AD server, then to the filer. This is offset by the ability of NDS Migrator to migrate data while the users are accessing the data, the SQL server being used by NDS Migrator to track changes. Obviously there will be downtime when the actual cutover occurs. Now that the data is on the filer with permissions migrated from NDS to CIFS/AD, we are set except for the fact that although user and group names are correct, the domain name and SID is wrong. There is functionality within FastLane to re-ACL everything to the correct NT4 Domain SID that we actually need. If anyone has done this, or sees any flaws in this plan, I would appreciate feedback. Filer qtree configuration...

Hello All, What a great list - I found the archives very helpful! I am setting up a Filer, an F760 with ONTAP 6.3 and both NFS and CIFS licences. Based on what I have read I have configured our only shelf as a single large volume (with one disk left unused or spare). I then plan to use qtrees to implement the directory hierarchy seen by users. What I would like to present to users is something like this: filer: /home/ srb/ bwk/ ... /ics/ sales/ products/ support/ ... Where "ics" is our company name. I'm sure you see what I mean. So, for example, NFS users could mount either or both of "filer1:/home" and "filer1:/ics". Windows users would probably setup network connections to both "home" and "ics". I have created a qtree "/vol/vol0/home" and copied some users home directories into it, this seems to work well. But I am a bit puzzled how to implement the company hierarchy. I think that ideally "sales", "support", etc. would be separate qtrees - but it seems that qtrees can only exist at the top level, so this is not possible? Or, I could create "sales", "support", etc. as qtees directly at the top level but then users would have to mount each tree individually? Or, I could create a single "company" qtree with the various functional directories under it... but then I would not be able to take advantage of qtree features such as having separate quotas and dumps for these different "functions". Using Net-SNMP to monitor NetApp Traps

Hello Toasters. I would very much like to talk with any one using Net-SNMP to monitor their Filers/Caches. I've been using simple SNMP-get's for some time now (you can see my work here: http://www.cuddletech.com/netapp/ which is slightly outdated). But I'd like to implement a traphandler in PERL with Net-SNMP, but having some trouble with how to tackle the problem. We have a 6 drive volume of highly compressible information that will stream to tape at over 20 MB/sec. However, a 7 drive volume that only contains a few dozen very large Oracle datafiles, now at times struggles to write 4 MB/sec! The only correlation that I can make is that when disk utilization goes above 40%, the backup speed plummets below 10 MB/sec. Have you tried running sysstat or statit during the backup? My biggest concern is that this may be the first symptom of some major problem. If 7 drives can't read faster than 4MB/sec, then wouldn't you be a little worried?

Hi Art, Firstly it won't create a _serious_ performance problem. WAFL stripes across all the disks in the volume, regardsless of the number of RAID groups. Yes, you have another parity disk but you won't have "single drive seek" issues on the raid group with 1 data drive in it. Remember, we're dealing with a RAID-aware filesystem here, not dumb block-level RAID. However, the space consumption will be an issue for you, at least until you add more drives. Most of my customers run 14 disk RAID groups (MTTDL=~95000 years for the old 18GB drive, I can't imagine it would be worse for the newer drives). Yep, you need to backup, recreate volume and restore. Don't forget to recreate your qtrees manually before you restore. OR, if you can temporarily borrowe another shelf from your FLNR (friendly local NetApp reseller), you can create a new volume on the other shelf and volcopy the data to and from it. Rahul, You're dumping to a remotely attached linear tape drive. I have seen this kind of thing many times with DLT drives (of all flavours). If the network link can't quite keep up with the drive for a moment due to other network loads (or lots of seek on the filer due to large number of inodes), the drive stops and rewinds ("backhitching"). The time it takes to do this is hundreds of times longer than the momentary network congestion, so this plays havoc with the I/O queuing on the host the tape is attached to, which causes "dump" on the filer to back off and wait because it's not getting RMT verifies. This results in even more sporadic gaps in the stream to the tape drive, which backhitches more.... i.e. you end up in a vicious circle of performance degradation. The speed variance available in SDLT is not enough to prevent backhitching. The cures: 1) Attach the tape drive to the filer! 2) Provide dedicated bandwidth for the backup - i.e. a crossover gigabit link between the Sun box and the filer. (private subnet IP range as well of course) 3) Replace the SDLT with a non-linear tape that doesn't backhitch - i.e. AIT3 or VXA2. AIT3 is IMHO superior to SDLT in many ways. All of these options will cost you money - even (1) if you need to then buy NetVault so you can backup all the other servers' local disks to the tape attached to the filer. But obviously budget is a problem or you wouldn't be using dump. Hope this helps.
