We were running 6.2R2 since it was released and we were seeing the problem occasionally. Scott, What type is assigned to the qtree that is being shared out as CIFS? Where is your script granting the user permissions? On the NetApp itself? Or from NT? I have recently been setting up CIFS shares from qtrees that are "mixed". What I have noticed is that permissions changes made on the UNIX side show up in the NT ACLs and vice versa. I've also noticed that "Special permissions" are given in the case where the user might not be in the NT group that has been given permissions, but is in the UNIX group that owns the file/directory. Scott, We had the same set of problems when we were running 5.3.7 on the filers... when we upgraded to 6.x, we stopped seeing those problems. The only problem we did resolve was we had a share name "L&I". When we renamed the share to LnI, it stopped dropping it's permissions. Actually, spares don't count as far as the software limits are concerned. Data Ontap will prevent you adding disks to a live volume if you are hitting the volume or total filer storage limits, but the number of hot spares is only limited by the available id's on the FCAL loop. Spare disks and SnapRestore

Hi, I have a couple of questions. The first is regarding spare disks. I'm going to have a fully loaded F810 soon; 2 shelves with a total of twenty-one 72GB drives. Since I will have spare slots in the shelves I was wondering if I can setup the netapp with a 22nd drive as a hot-spare instead of "wasting" one out of my 21 disk pool. The specs on the F810 say it maxes out at 1.5 TB raw which I will be hitting with the 21 drives. And a much more general question; what does SnapRestore do? I believe this is a separately licensed option and I haven't really been able to glean too much from the Netapp website. Thanks. -Charles Bartels

Clearcase_abld user

Hello, A question for anyone running clearcase in a mixed environment... We have a PC domain and a UNIX domain. Each has users accessing clearcase. I have currently created the clearcase_abld user in the UNIX domain, and made him a member of a group. I have also created a clearcase_albd user in windows, and made a group with he same name as the UNIX group. However, I am told this is quite an unusual way of doing this, and a more normal approach is to create a user map in the Netapps usermap.cfg file which maps clearcase_albd to a user in the UNIX domain who will have right to the vobs etc. Any one have any suggestions on the best approach? Art, There were (4) different 18GB disks used in the StorageShelf FC8's and FC9's: X221A FC8 Only X221B FC8 Only X221C FC8 & FC9 X221D FC8 & FC9 A couple years ago we tested the X221A's and X221B's in FC9's for a few weeks to satisfy our own curiosity. We found no problems. We would never recommend this to a customer and it is always best to follow the guidelines listed. You should review the NetApp Disk Drive & Firmware Matrix on the NOW site. migration to new switch: questions

All the equipment in the server room has to be moved from a Cajun P550 switch to an Alpine 3808 Extreme switch, including our filers: an F760 with 9 Ethernet ports, an F740 with 4 ports, and an F230 with one port. - Is it necessary to bring down the filers before changing out the cables, or is it possible to get away with leaving them up and just unplugging the old cables and plugging in the new ones? - With the F760, eight of the ports are on two boards, and the ninth is a separate port labeled 10/100 BASE-T. If the system can remain up during the migration, does it matter what order the ports are moved? Also, if anyone has experience with this sort of migration, I'd appreciate any warnings, suggestions, or sadder-but-wiser advice (i.e., things you wish you'd known before you migrated your equipment) you can offer. We've already been warned to turn autonegotiation off and nail up the speed and duplex state on the Extreme. FC-AL on a 540

We're looking at replacing some (most) of the SCSI drives and shelves on our F540 with a FC-AL shelf. Looking through NOW I find hints that the F500 series supports FCAL, but going to the Configuration comparison I see that the F540 doesn't support FC-AL but that the F520 does. This I find to be very strange. Is there a reason for this? Does the F540 support FCAL? <scw> ----- Stephen C. Dear sir, My name is MR BILL USENI the eldest son of Rtd General JEREMAIAH. J. T. The prominent amongst the deals was monies that emanated from funds set aside for the importation of Arms and Ammunitions to boost the Nigerian Defense, funds set to embark on an oversea campaign to counter the United States action to put a stop to the self succession bid of the Abachas government to retain power, and monies set aside to rehabilitate the ailing Nigerian Petroleum Refineries and the National Electric Power Authority which supplies Electricity to the entire nation. If you are conversant with world news, you would understand better.During this period my father was able to make some good money for himself and kept in his private bank accounts. The then head of state General Sani Abacha transferred his share of the money through a Lebanese businessman,Chagoury and a Jewish businessman, Mark Rissar to bank accounts overseas.Unfortunately, all the secrets were revealed by the investigation agencies set up by the successive governments and most of the Abachas loots were traced and repatriated from the various accounts to the Federal Government Treasury.Out of the money my father made, he left the sum of N50 Million (FiftyMillion Naira) in the CBN escrow account for further transfer into a foreign account and a sum of $60M (Sixty Million Dollars) was kept in a Private security firm here in Nigeria. Through the confessions made by the Abachas Family, the N50 Million was recovered by the investigating agency from the CBN escrow account. But were unable to discover the$60M, which he kept in the vaults. The reason is because no names were used to lodge in the funds.Instead, he used PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS(PIN) and declared the contents as Bearer Bonds and Treasury Bills. Also the firm issued him with a certificate of deposit of the consignments.Note that I have these information in my custody.Right now, my father has been arrested and detained for interrogation.As the eldest son of my Father, I believe that I owe the entire family an obligation to ensure that the $60M is successfully transferred abroad for investment purposes. With the present situation, I cannot do it all by myself. It is based on this that I am making this contact with you. I have done a thorough homework and fine-tuned the best way to create you as the beneficiary to the funds and effect the transfer accordingly. Netapp equipment

Hi To All Just to let you all have a chance, I have the responsibility to remove quantities of older Netapp equipment, such as; F230's F630's F540, also scsi shelves differential and single ended with 9gb drives and I even have the older shelves that hold the 4gb drives. I also have other equipment but not Netapp. This inventory is at give away prices and some I will just give away and that's probably what I will do, donate to our Ottawa Universities and Colleges. My father had already made arrangement for his family thats talking about my mother, my little sister and myself to be evacuated to Abidjan Cote d' Ivoire with the CERTIFICATE OF DEPOSIT he made with a security firm in Europe through the aid of U.N evacuation team. During the war in my country, and following the indiscriminate looting of Public and Government properties by the rebel forces, the Sierra Leone mining coop. Was one of the target looted and it was destroyed. My father including other top Government functionaries were attaked and killed by the rebels in November 2000 because of his relationship with the civilian Government of Ahmed Tejan Kabbah. As a result of my father's death , and with the news of my uncle's involvement in the air crash in Januaryit dashed our hope of survival. The untimely deaths caused my mother's heart failure and other related complications of which she later died in the hospital after we must have spent a lot of money on her early this year . Now my 18 years old sister and myself are alone in this strange country suffering without any care or help. Without any relation, we are now like refugees and orphans. XP refreshing

Hello Toasters, I have an F740c running 6.1.2R1 in NT4 domain. Currently, the client PC are being migrated to XP into W2K AD (mixed mode). Came across a peculiar problem and wondering if anyone else experience it. XP client with Windows Explorer open is continually refreshing when open against a Filer volume, share folder. Analysis has shown that it seems to be every two seconds a refresh occurs, and when using a network trace tool, it seems to average out at around 50K per second. As soon as explorer's focus is placed elsewhere, or shut down, this network load stops. This 'refreshing' only appears if the share folder is highly utilize. Connecting to a share folder that is no busy, the 'refreshing' does not exist. Notice this with W2K Pro client as well, but not as frequent as XP Client. thanks, Marcus Bui
