I had similar problems. As far as I know, I have the full privs needed to add a host into the ActiveDirectory stuff, and I would authenticate properly as myself when I tried to run cifs setup under 6.3.1, but it would fail with permission denied errors. Since we were in a bit of a rush to get this system setup and deployed, I don't have access to it again to try some other suggestions from NetApp, which mostly involve turning on logging and access tracing so I can see what's causing the access denied problems. John, We added the "Computer Object" into the domain prior to running CIFS Setup (waited a few minutes for replication). Hi, I'm having a problem getting an F760 with NFS/CIFS running OnTap 6.3.1 to actually talk to our Win2K domain properly. I'm assuming it's a priv problem on the PDC side, but I don't know enough of how to fix it. Basically, whenever I try to run 'cifs setup', it fails at the end with the following message: Could not create Active Directory account for the filer: No such object CIFS could not create server machine account. But I'm supposed to have the privs with my account to add this machine into ActiveDirectory. Has anyone else run into stuff like this? And does anyone have any hints on what I need to do on the Windows PDC to give myself the privs I need to get this done? 144GB Fiber Channel drives in the field

hiya anyone using the 144GB drives? currently we have DS14s filled with 36GB drives. these are used in a production environment, so of course we need maximum uptime. we're considering getting more DS14s filled with either 72GB or 144GB drives. we want the most bang for the buck, but i have concerns about the 144GB drives. anyone out there have any experience with them? are the reconstruct times for a 144GB disk proportionally prohibitive when compared to 72GB and 36GB drives? how long does it take to reconstruct a failed 144GB drive on a hot spare compared to 72GB and 36GB disks, under consistent filer workload and raid reconstruct speed? are there performance issues to consider if we were to go with 144GB rather than 72GB? any other pros and cons? thanks in advance, kallen

What was the speed you were expecting? And what did you get? When writing to all (9) R100 volumes concurrently, I got to a max of 30Mbytes/Sec. That got the R100 to 100% cpu constant. (The source filers weren't that busy). RE: R100 Performance Problems

Hi Frank, The issue is possibly one of expectation... The R-100 is, after all, intended to be a "near-line" device. Certainly, the CPU, RAM and NVRAM figures are far below what would be normal for a production "on-line" Fibre Channel based filer of similar capacity. Having said that, the performance should be at least better than a tape array. There are several configuration issues that may affect networking performance to the box. I'm working with a customer who just got an R-100 and the performance is much less than we expected. I'm wondering what type of performance other people are experiencing with their R-100, or for that matter with other similar low-cost drive storage options. I do not believe the volume was full, I believe it was around 90% usage. I have tried upgrading all of the disks firmware, it says they are all already up to date. If the disk count in the sysconfig -d matches your physical number of disks you have installed, and it looks like it has, then you have a single volume failure. Ontap writes label information to each disk, hence the ability to plug the disks in anywhere and the filer will find the disks and form the volume. You are using an FC card in slot 4 (not the onboard FC) which if it can see all the disks is pointing to a volume corruption problem and not a hardware problem. To be sure you could take the filer down and run HW diagnostics?? Was the volume full?? Have you tried upgrading all the disk firmware?? I have found the following bug reports on the NOW site. Toasters- A rather interesting update for everyone on the problem I posted yesterday with an 880c and FAS960c clusters that refused to bind to a Solaris 8 NIS server. Just to help us isolate the problem between OS and NIS, we initialized a Solaris 2.6 system, as a NIS slave to the Solaris 8 NIS server that we couldn't get the filers to bind to. Surprisingly, the FAS960c bound with no problems to the Solaris 2.6 NIS slave. To us, this rules out a configuration issue with the NIS domain itself and focuses the problem back to an apparent Solaris 8 NIS/DataONTAP incompatibility. I was somewhat surprised that no one replied that they are using Solaris 8 NIS with DataONTAP. I have updated the tech support case I have opened with both Sun and NetApp and I'll keep the list informed as the solution moves along. Thanks, Brent Killion

Hi, Yes I agree to the problem you are facing. Try creating an account for the filer in the domain. wait for the replication to happen and thenm run cifs setup. You shd be fine. But i assume that the filer by running cifs setting even when the account is not precreated has the ability to create a computer account for itself. You can find that option in the gui mode of admin http://<name_of_filer>/na_admin. Also pl check with your admins if you are a member of account operators (just a guess). FYI, If the win2k domain is in native mode, then your best bet would be to downgrade to 6.3, run cifs setup, join the domain and reupgrade to 6.3.1. Actually there is a i feel so, a bug in version prior to 6.3 in which the filers cannot join to the native win2k domain using fqdn eg abc.rest.com. I doesnt just understand the native doman properly. It shd be a problem. We have done this on our couple of filers to make em properly talk to Win2k native domain. Hope this helps... I think netapp shd do something about it. My question(finally) * The NetApp CPU % busy when copying 2 files doesnt seem to be as high when copying 1 file. The Net KB out dont seem to be as high either ? This seem contrary to intuition. I know that both of my 760's came with PCI FCALs and terminators on the on-board (no orange stickers). Solaris 2.8 NIS and DataONTAP

Toasters- Has anyone seen any difficulty in getting a F880c running 6.2.2 to bind to a NIS domain running on a Solaris 8 NIS master? We have an F880c that plays very nicely when bound to a NIS server running Solaris 2.6. We built a new NIS domain, with a new name, running on Solaris 8 but the F880c systems refuse to bind to the new domain when following the standard DataONTAP commands. We're pretty confident that the new NIS domain config isn't the problem as we have 75 other Solaris systems of the flavor of 2.6, 7, and 8 bound to it with no problems. Here is the relevant portion of the snoop output when snooping the interface on the NIS server. I see the call from the filer "filer2" to the NIS server "dvniss" but the NIS server refuses to answer it's bind request. This just repeats over and over every time the filer sends a bind request. {root}on dvniss< snoop filer2 Using device /dev/dmfe (promiscuous mode) filer2 -> dvniss NIS C DOMAIN_NONACK pwcorp filer2 -> dvniss NIS C DOMAIN_NONACK pwcorp filer2 -> dvniss NIS C DOMAIN_NONACK pwcorp Can anyone shed any light on what we may be missing? All of the admin area is stored local oracle/admin/<SID> When we want to failover, we break the mirror, repoint the NFS mount, copy a control file to the proper location, make sure the ~/admin/<SID> location is good to go...and restart the DB. >How often do you SnapMirror them?
