"disk fail" command

Question about "disk fail" command. We are running NetApp Release 5.3.6R2. The System Admin guide says that "[t]he disk fail command permanently marks a disk as failed. You cannot reuse the disk; you must replace it." This is pretty strong statement. Can the disk be *unmarked* with some standalone utility or something? Just jumped in to this thread, hope I am following it ok. My F880 fits the scenario I think. We have had multiple volumes over 80%, one of them hitting 90% occasionally. These are reasonably busy disks, during peak times utilization hits 60-80% on the Sybase db volumes and may be 40-60% on the batch volumes. The only time we noticed a significant performance drop was when our db volumes were at around 85-90%. They ran like that for a month at least with utilization at 100% and cache age <5ms. The wafl scan measure_layout never went above ~3, indicating defragmentation was never an issue. The batch volumes at 90+ % were similar. The db volumes were fixed by adding a shelf of disks to each. Good old-fashioned write bottlenecking being the culprit. Not sure if that helps. Deepak, Filers get fragmented over time ... I guess that's just the basic drawback of having a 'Write Anywhere File Layout'. One one hand I've been told the WAFL is designed to handle Fragmentation but then I'm told to run 'scan' on the filesystem periodically if I'm anywhere near capacity. [I'd say most people don't run their filers empty ... unless they're new ... but over time the filesystem approaches capacity and Fragmentation sets in] ... and I am also told never to add a single drive because that increases fragmentation [all the new data gets written to the new drive if your other drives are full, creates a hot disk for your new files, and your old files get a few new blocks on the new drive ... it'll take a while for the load to balance itself out, if it ever does.] I've just resigned myself that Fragmentation over time is a fact of life, you add a full shelf at a time, and hope the users dont notice or complain about degrading performance over time... Fragmentation

Deepak: Just for emphasis, you should not have any framentation on volume that is less than 90% full. The filer reserves, 10% of the volumes disk space to handle framentation. Even with this said, remember the filer buffers write requests and chooses the disk blocks to write to, in memory so that it can make the best decision before handing the request to the raid manager. If you allowed your volume to become over 90% full and continued running (meaning writing) to the disk, then you might have a problem. Don't look for fragmenation unless you meet that condition and remember, it is best to add disk in multiple (3 or more at a time). Rackmounted terminals

Hello, Do any of you have a rack mounted terminal attached to your filer? I have a Wyse 50 at the moment, but wanted to invest in one of the flat screen pull out type of displays if at all possible, in an effort to tidy up my network room a bit. OnTap 6.4, Solaris 8, directory caching

Okay, this is very cool. I updated my pseudo-production F720 for my staff to 6.4 today because I need to test out the newer code for a much bigger filer that is in production for real people :) So, files being dumped into my ~/Maildir/ area (Maildir mail format) as mail is being delivered to me. I am the only person on staff that has this config, rest of the users use /var/mail/<user>. I can watch my procmailrc log and see that mail is being delivered and the filenames involved. But... I have a filer running 6.1.3 of OnTap (that's the last version that supports the hardware) and I'm having a tough time getting root on my unix host and my domain administrator for Win2k to map properly to each other. I believe that this is the correct syntax for usermap.cfg Administrator -> root Administrator <- root But this doesn't seem to be working. So, here are my questions: 1. What is the correct syntax? 2. Do I need to be explicit about the domain? 3. Should I map the group Domain Admins and not the individual? If there is anything else that I'm missing feel free to let me know. Thanks.

ONTAP upgrade license?

Here's a continuation of my last question. If I was to somehow procure a legal media kit for a version of ONTAP that's older than the revision currently supported by Network Appliance, Inc, can I get a simple upgrade? Does that require a new license purchase? Can I just buy the unlicensed upgrade media kit from somewhere and then instell that and have it inherit my old license? What about going from version Z.X to Z.Y or something like that? Are the upgrades cheap or free? Purchasable online from a used vendor, or downloadable from netapp.com? ONTAP media kits

Hey there! I have a couple of old used Netapps lying around that I'd like to see if I can do something with. I'm new again to the Netapp community after many years. I'll have to acquire and install all the software on them. However, as I understand from netapp.com (http://www.netapp.com/support/ues.html), all software licenses are voided upon transfer of hardware ownership as occurred with my used appliances. And I don't see any media kits for sale online *anywhere* via google or ebay. Finally, I did find a refurbished Netapp vendor who claims to have a few appliances for sale with the software licenses somehow intact for the OS, NFS, and CIFS. What's the situation with the acquisition of media kits and the transfer or renewal of software licenses? Can you guys help me reconcile whether or not I can legally obtain the following: 1) a media kit (CDROM or download of the OS and whatever accessories) 2) a license to legally install that Is it legal to at least buy/sell an unlicensed media kit? Doesn't that fall under "fair use" of the US copyright law, as a backup copy separate from the license? Or can I download the full media from netapp.com? Then I could buy a license from Network Appliance, Inc. I just need to legally use it; I don't need support from Network Appliance, Inc. I agree about not doing the verification. I have 4 Exchange 5.5 servers with about 60 gig each. 3 of them are on a F820 that is also doing file services for 4000 home directories with a single shared GbE interface. Schedule your verifications for off-peak hours or just don't do them. oracle does not respond during the failover of 960c

We have a clustered node of 960c. During the failover, when we issue cf takeover, all ORACLE DB's became unresponsive, you can not attach yourself to DB at all until the giveback. During the failover, you can browse the mount points, create file on shares etc. I am sure we have tested this out before on other clustered nodes. Completely puzzled why these nodes are not working properly. Toasters- An update on this posting I made last month: We discovered that by disabling Solaris IP Network Multipathing which we use on the Solaris 8 NIS master and slave to provide network redundancy, the filers bind successfully. Just curious out of the respondents who said "I'm using Solaris 8 NIS and DataONTAP just fine", is there anyone else who is using the Solaris 8 IPNM functionality with NIS and DataONTAP? We have been using NIS+ on a Solaris 2.6 environment for 5 years and NIS+ on a separate environment for over a year with no issues at all. (Both in compatibility mode) We regard to the NIS Group update issue it is probably a line in the group file that is over 1024 characters in length. We have this happen regularly and the effect is that people have access problems usually via CIFS. We have to "manage" the entry to less than 1024 characters and the group update works OK. This will eventually cause us a problem as there is only so much slack in the one entry that we can take out. There is no way that we can split the group as it is used to manage access to a third party product. We have a DS-14 connected to a set of FC-9 shelves. The only issue I remember was making sure that you have your shelf ID's are correct and the last DS-14 shelf properly terminated. Apart from that everything else was fairly straightforward. The connection method is the same for all shelves - there's an "IN" port and "OUT" port on each shelf, and you should only have one "out" port on your FC9, which you connect to the "in" port on the DS14. Just make sure the termination on the DS14 is on. As far as I can remember, You can't connect a DS14 to a chain that contains an FC7 or FC8 - But I may be mistaken... Anyhow, the DS14 should be the last shelf in the chain, with the shelves going from the oldest (connected to the filer) to the newest. This change requires the filer to be turned off, but any other DS14 you add can be added live afterwards. The connection method is the same for all shelves - there's an "IN" port and "OUT" port on each shelf, and you should only have one "out" port on your FC9, which you connect to the "in" port on the DS14. Just make sure the termination on the DS14 is on. Hi, We are adding two DS14 disk shelves to an F760 this weekend, which already has two FC7 and one FC9 shelves. The FC9 is the last shelf in the current chain. The documentation on how to connect the shelves up is a bit ambiguous. Do we connect the DS14 to the first LRC module on the FC9? etc etc. Has anyone connected these disks in this way? We had 6 x 150 GB information stores and it took in excess of 10 hours per store so we stopped doing the verification. It deosn't really do anything anyway excpet get NetApp a tick in the box for MS support. We have successfully verified a corrpupted 5.5 database. It is possible to snaprestore an exchange database and then manually ship the logs yourself. It then plays all the logs forward to the time of the failure. There are a number of MS support articles that will help you understand how to do this but the Disaster recovery Whitepaper for Exchange 5.5 is probably the best. Incrementals will take too long, so I want to perform a level0 dump with ndmpcopy nightly. Problem is that I cant force it to overwirte - I get "file exists" etc. and this is taking just as long as if I do incrementals. So, anyone have a pointer? Thanks
