Moving disk shelfs between filers

Hi! I've got one F630 with 2 disk shelfs, 14 disks and its running OnTAP 5.3.7R3 and one F760 with 4 disk shelfs, 17 disks and its running OnTAP 6.2R2. The F630 needs more diskspace and no extra disk slots, so I've like to move one of the diskshelfs from the F760 to the F630 and add some spare disk to it. The diskshelf, which I planed to move, has 3 or 4 disks connected to it, so I must move disks internally on the F760. How do I do this with as little downtime as possible? Anybody that would like to share their experience with me? Thanks, Magnar

Dylan, This was just about the jist of my reply to Brian. We do have several NIC's in the Filer as of yet unused which could be routed to the DMZ. WWW over NFS

Has anybody located their root website on a filer and mounted it via NFS to their webserver? I don't believe it would need "root=" permissions. I'm considering this possibility but am curious towards the Security considerations. IE: We'd have to open the NFS port through out Firewall to the DMZ to allow the NFS mount. How secure is the NFS port in OnTAP? Thanks -Bob

No..it uses the builtin loopback/localhost IP pipe. Rancho HVD-LVD converter

We have recently purchased a LVD SDLT 320 tape drive that we were hoping could plug directly into our F720 Filer. Problem is that filer has a HVD SCSI connection on the back of it and no ability to add a LVD SCSI card to it (at least that is what Netapp Support says). So I was wondering if anyone out there has tried a Rancho LVD to HVD SCSI converter in this type of application and if so what were the results. Thanks in advance, Todd Leuffgen

Resize existing volume

I have a Filer 720. Is there any way to resize an existing volume short of re-creating it? Originally the volume started with all 18 GB drives. Overtime, as disks failed, they were replaced with 36 GB drives. So now we have some 36 GB drives that are only half used. I am using Time Navigator to backup an nfs share on an f85 filer. I have given the linux bacup server "dilbert" root access via the exports file: /vol/volxtal/x -root=dilbert:omega,access=alpha:beta I have run an exportfs to make sure that everything is ok. Solution ID: ntapcs753 Title: Frequently asked questions on Zoned and Block Checksums - NetApp Filer In short is says that you can mix them but BCS will not be able to act as a spare (in you case you need an ZCS as a spare or will suffer degraded mode if a drive fails. Q. Can I add a BCS disk to an existing volume group which is currently using zoned checksums? A. Yes, they can all be added but cannot all be used as spares. With the BCS checksum format, 18 GB and 72 GB drives, can be added to a current ZCS volume as a spare in a ZCS or BCS raid group. However a 36 GB BCS drive cannot be used as a spare for a 36 GB ZCS dirve. Note also, that no Zoned Checksum disk can be used as a replacement for a BCS checksum formatted disk. Note the following exception: Q. Are the FC9 and DS14 34 GB disks identical in size and block capacity A. The 36 GB BCS formatted disk CANNOT be used as a replacement spare disk for the 36 GB Zoned Checksum disk because the 36 GB BCS disk right sizes to 34 GB and the 36 GB Zoned Checksum disk right sizes to 34.5 GB, and, therefore, does not have the same storage capacity. Q. Will I still get the performance boost from the BCS disk when it is part of a ZCS volume? A. No. Checksums are not stored in the extra 64 bits of the BCS (520B/sector) disk blocks; therefore, the volume still uses either ZCS or, for pre-Data ONTAP 6.0, no checksums at all. Q. Can a volume have more than one checksum style? A. The checksum style applies to the entire volume. You cannot have a volume with both checksum styles. Steve, You can add 36GB BCS (X231) drives to a ZCS volume, but you cannot use the 36GB BCS (X231) drives as spares for 36GB ZCS drives. The 36GB BCS disk size is smaller (34.0GB for BCS compared to 34.5GB for ZCS). The way you are running right now, you have no spares if one of your 36GB ZCS (X225A) drives fails. You should find another spare large enough to accommodate the 34.5GB requirement of your X225A's. Steve, There is no risk of data corruption because of the mixed drive types. 520B/sector drives can safely be used in a zoned-checksum volume. The extra 8 bytes per sector simply go unused. You are correct that the spare you have is not large enough to be used as a replacement for any of the 34.5GB-usable drives. I suggest finding a 34.5GB 512B/sector drive to use as a spare, instead of the 34GB spare you currently have. Apologies that the drives are slightly different sizes. 520B/sector formatting was introduced around the time that "36" GB drives were most common, and when they were formatted for 520B/sector instead of 512, the resulting space wasn't quite enough to allow for 34.5GB of usable space. If we had it to do over again, we'd likely have made the 512B/sector drives slightly smaller, so all "36" GB drives would be the same usable size, and this issue wouldn't arise. We've moved away from ZCS for currently-shipping systems, although I know that doesn't help you on this particular system. Is it bad to mix BCS and ZCS drives in the same volume? A person from a reputable Network Appliance supply company told me that this will probably most definitely lead to data corruption. I don't know if the network card is in the path of an internal copy, but I'm fairly certain it does not. I copied 400M internally on my F880C in just under 2 minutes. I'm sure it depends heavily on the amount of fragmentation on the source's file system (my wafl scan measure_layout was 1.13, which is almost perfect). For some reason I can't find the ndmp throttle (to limit the CPU usage of ndmpcopy), I'm guessing that option does not exist, too bad. I take it when copying files using ndmpcopy on a single source and destination filer the data never uses the network. This seems like it should be a lot faster, anybody have an idea how much faster? Also, which release was the first with ndmpcopy on board? Jim, If there are subdirectories in what you're copying, one way to speed things up is mounting the same pair of vols (old, new) multiple times, and running the find | cpio in each subdir. Dear Colleague, Please excuse the impersonal quality of this e-mail. I am writing to ask your help for an article I am writing about Life Practices. I am looking for examples of those simple things that we all do that are essential to expressing and maintaining our values as we face life's ups and downs - our Life Practices. I am especially interested in practices developed by those who have been in, lived through or dealt with the aftermath of war. What I am seeking is a bit like folklore. Something with a story and an easy to remember slogan or catchphrase. I am asking you to contribute out of your own personal experience not as an official representative of an organization. I am especially interested in those practices, which help you deal with others - in your family, at work, in your immediate community, in the larger global community, etc. This is the only e-mail you will receive from me unless you choose to participate in this project. So far I have gathered over 150 practices from people all over the world: These are examples of contributions I have received so far that may help clarify what I am looking for: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- " 'Water what you want to grow' is my motto. Whenever I see something being done well I acknowledge it as soon as possible and in some tangible way. The least that I do is to complement the person doing the thing well. What I try to do more often is write a note to the person or give them a small gift." "My life changed when I went from seeing mistakes as awful to seeing them as the first chapter of a textbook on a new subject. I even had this made into a sign that hangs on the wall in my office. 'Mistakes are just chapter one in a textbook on a new subject' Now I get bothered if I don't have some sort of royal screw-up every few days. It's like I am not trying." "I learned from my grandfather to 'use the best materials you can afford.' This has provided a model for my life's work. Even in my late 70's I am still actively building things and more to the point of your book, I am still building my life out of "the best materials I can afford." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- These practices come from people from many places and with a wide variety of backgrounds. I am grateful for that. I want to show the broadest possible view of Life Practices from around the globe. The article will feature some of the material I gather with some commentary. I will be grateful if you would send me a practice that you use as a foundation in your life. Please include some brief biographical information as well. Also, if you would like to share in what I am learning, please let me know as well. And please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thank you for your consideration. David, I did an analysis about 18 months ago & Trend came out on top for performance and managebility. Symantec CS was 2nd followed by McAfee. All 3 work fine & each have their pluses & minues. In the long run, it depends on what pricing you can pull out of the 3 of them and what you want for manageiblity. Carrier Scan wasn't really manageable, and McAfee requires EPO to centralize the stuff. Trend comes with their management utility in the form of an Information Server. I also noticed on busy systems (this was a F760 cluster running 99.9% CIFS) that CS & McAfee performance wasn't as good a Trend... Hi David, I was on the beta team for the Trend product and I have been very happy with it. The overhead on the filer is minimal and you can use existing NT servers to scan the filer. If you already use Trend ServerProtect, then it will run under the information server that you already have and you can manage it through the console that you are used to using. Currently Trend is working on another version with a lot of new features, but I'm not sure when I'll see the beta on that. If you have any specific questions, please let me know. Josh J.
