Disk Scrub Errors

"hobbyist" licenses?

Does NetApp have an official or unofficial "hobbyist" or "home user" program, for people who want to play with older systems at home in a non-production/non-profit environment, and cant afford a service contract? I've acquired a FA520 with four v2 SCSI disk shelves (full of 9G drives) and a full spares kit. The unit came with a NFS license, but no CIFS - and I'd like to experiment with CIFS on this unit without having to build a UNIX box and serve NFS via SAMBA. I'm running OnTap 5.3.7. I've heard that OnTap 6.4 has a longer time-out period. Also, you don't say how long there is between these messages. Working with one of our programmers, we had to add a line into the script stating that if the value was "nothing", then the value should be zero. That took care of the problem. We're thinking that the script became confused with the quota output under the Limit column for the root, which is "-". We would get a divide by zero error and the script would bomb. The box that we're running this from was using SCO. Snapshot Problems and CIFS

Look at this screen shot. It's of a users folders snapshot directory. http://planetevans.com/netapp/snapshot.jpg You can see that all the snapshots after nightly.3 are regular files. When I double click on them they want me to choose a program to open it with. This is of the directory \\filer\finance\llevinson\~snapshot If I go through \\filer\finance\~snapshot\<snapshot>\llevinson I can access everything just fine. Also several days ago (the day that lines up with the bad snapshots) everything from \\filer\finance\llevinson (the live data) disappeared and we had to pull it from the last snapshot (hourly.0 which was good) I'm working with NetApp right now. Originally I had 6.1.3R2 and they said there were several CIFS issues with that version of ONTAP, so I upgraded to 6.3.1R1. Unfortunately (or fortunately) it only happens once a month or less. After upgrading from Ontap 6.1.1R2P1 to 6.3.1R1 it no longer works except for just one of the qtrees. None of the permissions or qtree styles have changed. Anyone had a similar experience? Recoverable failing disk

LDAP Integration

Sun has announced they will no longer support nis or nisplus in the future and the upgrade path is to LDAP using the iplanet directory server 5.1 on Solaris 9. I upgraded a test environment that is now serving hosts, netgroups, passwd, group, and autmount tables via LDAP. I have Solaris and AIX clients binding to this server. Data Ontap 6.4 came with ldap support but I haven't had any luck getting it to work. I would like to get hosts, passwd, group, and netgetgroup services from LDAP. Here is a listing of my settings: options ldap ldap.base dc=my,dc=domain,dc=com ldap.enable on ldap.name cn=proxyagent,ou=profile,dc=my,dc=domain,dc=com ldap.passwd ****** ldap.port 389 ldap.servers 1xx.2xx.1xx.xx ldap.servers.preferred 1xx.2xx.1xx.xx cat /etc/nsswitch.conf passwd: ldap files hosts: ldap files group: ldap files netgroup: ldap files Any help would be greatly appreciated. I make added these changes and tested it by pinging a host that is in the ldap database and had no luck. -Mark

rdate and time keeping.

We're using rdate to keep our Filer's clock in sync to prevent clock skew errors when compiling things on NFS mounts. There seems to be a bug in OnTap 6.3.1R1. The clock works it's way out of sync, (hence why we use rdate), and we get: Tue Apr 29 15:25:18 BST [Java Thread:notice]: TimeDaemon: Rdate (rfc868) server 'dali.lionbio.co.uk' reports that the time is Tue Apr 29 15:25:21 BST 2003, but the filer thinks the time is Tue Apr 29 15:25:18 BST 2003. This time offset is too large to cause us to modify the time automatically (max allowable skew: 1.000 secs). If the time reported by the time server is correct, set the filer time using the 'date' command. So, to clear this, I set the time by hand using "date". This works fine and we occasionally see: Tue Apr 29 16:04:06 BST [Java Thread:info]: TimeDaemon: Time offset within tolerance [dali.lionbio.co.uk]: actual -0.640 secs, tolerance 1.500 secs, not changing time. And after a time we get the first out-of-sync message. In effect, rdate is doing nothing at all to change the time, as the Max Skew rdate will change over is 1 second, but won't bother changing until it's at least 1.5 seconds out of sync. Today a disk failed, but different from what I'm used to seeing. It appears now that I look at it that disk 4.19 failed and it took spare disk 4.38 and began rebuilding on that. What seems strange though is that it kept trying to read or write to disk 4.19 until I physically pulled the disk out. Does anybody do a direct connect from a Sun or whatever to the NetApp via a crossover 100Bt cable? If so what considerations did you make when ifconfig'ing the Sun? Did you use static routes? Looking for 220V powers for Shelf...

I am looking for 2 powermodules for Netapp-shelf (FC6?). The powers I have are 110V, and thus unusable here in Norway. The part code of my 110V powermodules are XLPSU-NA1. I need the 220V version. Does anyone have any spares? This is for home-experimentation, and I do not wish to pay like 2-300 $ for each power... Can anyone help? John Enger
