FAS940 Installation troubles with Domain Authentication

Hi, i´ve got a FAS940 and i´m trying to set up it, on windows 2000 environment. When i try to connect the FAS to the Domain, EPM_BOG, the system needs to restart CIFS services, when the system restart i receive the next error: CIFS -> General Setup Applied - please note the following:CIFS License:cifs license enabled. Run cifs setup to enable cifs. Setup:CIFS could not start. See log. Filer FAS940 removed from workgroup WORKGROUP CIFS - could not determine domain type. Assuming NT4 domain CIFS - Connecting filer to the NT4 domain. CIFS local server is shutting down... Then, i cant access the FAS from any server, i cannot access the FAS, please anybody van help me? New 36, 72 and 144gb universal disk drives

Hi Folks I see Netapp is now selling a universal drive, I'm unable to find any information from the NOW site. 1. These drives are replacing the old 36, 72 and 144gbg drives 2. I assume by universal you can use these in existing raid groups of zoned, block checksum drives 3. is there any issue in using these for spares with the 36gb zoned or block checksum drives Anybody out there have any knowledge about these drives would be much appreciated. Newbie: simple NetApp -> NetApp backup, sans Legato et al?

Please excuse my ignorance, we're just about to buy a Filer or two but I don't have any hands-on experience yet. We're looking at a first filer with about 2.5TB and my understanding is we could not do a tape backup overnight with only a single-drive tape subsystem. At this time, we would prefer not to invest in something like Legato to intelligently drive a multi-drive jukebox like the Spectralogic series, though this should be able to dump the full capacity overnight. ("enterprise backup" is down the road). Instead, I was considering getting a second NetApp (probably refurb with transferable license) and backing up the first to the second. This seems surprisingly cost-effective. (I'd love to do SnapMirror but it's surprisingly cost-prohibitive.)-: Is there a way to natively run dumps from one NetApp to another without Legato-ish middleware? without an intermediary client box doing NFS/CIFS mounts? (we need to preserve both filesystem attributes). Is this a plain stooopid idea? Any better ones? Again, I'm hoping to avoid jumping into something Legato-esque at this point -- and just do something cheap and reusable like another NetApp -- because we'll be looking into a more comprehensive backup solution later. Thanks, and sorry for my ignorance. Pointers to docs welcomed.

Power Requirements for F760 and DS9

Hey Toasters, My Generator blew so I have to buy some UPS's. I'm trying to size these puppies for my 760 with 4-DS9 connected. The NetApp guide says that the Filer draws only 300W and each shelf draws about 350W, giving me a total of just 1700W. Can anybody confirm these numbers, they seem awfully low to me for "a toaster". The numbers in snap list are relative to the total volume sizes: 29527820 / (163842632 + 29527820) = 0.1527, which is rounded to 15% of the total used space. 29527820 / (300719556 + 75179888) = .07855, which is rounded to 8% of the total size of the volume. 39% is how much of the snap reserve you're using right now. RE: Legato and NDMP

Just to add what others have said about NDMP and Legato, here's my experience: 1. You can use nfs mounts with legato fine, but you will not get CIFS metadata that way. So if you're only using NFS on your filer, I would recommend using nfs mounts instead of NDMP...more flexible and fewer juke issues down the road. If you're using CIFS you will probably want to retain your user permission data. 2. our juke (ATL1500) requires an ungodly amount of load sleep and unload sleep time to be able to mount and unmount tapes. I have it set to 300 sec on every sleep time that affects loading. What happened with the default (5 sec I think) is that it would get the signal to load the tape, then get the signal to read the label way before the tape was in the drive, and therefore think the drive was empty, and come back with an error. Icky. Once we increased the load times, all was ok. 3. NDMP can't do incremental backups (differentials are fine)...we do a full one night and level 1's the rest of the week, and that works fine. 4. we had the juke directly attached to the filer but for various reasons related to our particular environment we ended up attaching it to a sun machine and using a 3-way NDMP setup to back up the filer. It's not as fast as direct attach but it does work. In the unlikely event that you need to do this, feel free to email me direct and I'll be happy to walk you through it. You'll probably only need to do this if you've significantly angered one of ye elder gods, though...it's not normal. I agree with John: I don't see a piracy issue here. We've got 50,000 systems out there already, and I don't see why home users would be more likely to try to steal something than the people who already have access to those 50,000 systems. Plus we've got the Data ONTAP simulator which we are letting lots of folks have. I would like to support any move in this direction, I would also be interested in knowing what the correct path is for getting access to the ONTAP simulator is.

This thread highlights the whole issue with how NetApp licensing is managed. The licence is perpetual, as long as the box doesn't change hands. This seems very inconsistent. If a software licence is limited-term (like MS 6.0 per-year licencing) then it makes sense for it to be not transferable. If however the basic license is perpetual and only associated with that physical hardware, then it should be transferable. NetApp's half-way approach is inconsistent and very confusing for the aftermarket - it means that there is most likely now a fair number of 2nd hand NetApp boxes out there running on their original license codes that are now running illegally according to the terms of the licence agreement. If NetApp were to keep the base licences hardware bound (ownership of the license transfers with the system serial number), they would probably see a small secondary revenue stream from a proportion of 2nd hand owners taking up support contracts - for non end-of-support systems only of course. Instead they want a second bite at the big cherry by forcing 2nd hand owners to pay for a whole new licence, which apart from being morally dubious means that in reality they get nothing because someone who paid $2500 for an old filer isn't going to pay $20K or more for licencing to just to run it legally. And if the system is past the end-of-software support date NetApp won't even sell you a license for a 2nd hand platform - in other words they want to turn all aged filers into boat anchors - not a very good way to promote the value of the system. If I buy a Mac OS server, run it for three years then sell the server to a friend, my friend now has the perpetual Mac OS license that came with that server. Apple has kept their MacOS licensing hardware bound mainly for historical reasons, but it does save a lot of confusion and concern in the second hand market. (let's not even begin to discuss the complete mess that is MS OS licencing...) All this would be meaningless if it weren't for the fact that unlike regular servers, NetApp filers are often useful way beyond their expected official life span. Even an aged "low-end" F720 blows away any current Wintel platform as a plain CIFS server. And likewise you need a pretty high-spec current Unix platform to beat it for NFS. Does NetApp have an official or unofficial "hobbyist" or "home user" program, for people who want to play with older systems at home in a non-production/non-profit environment, and cant afford a service contract? I've acquired a FA520 with four v2 SCSI disk shelves (full of 9G drives) and a full spares kit. The unit came with a NFS license, but no CIFS - and I'd like to experiment with CIFS on this unit without having to build a UNIX box and serve NFS via SAMBA. I'm running OnTap 5.3.7. Working with one of our programmers, we had to add a line into the script stating that if the value was "nothing", then the value should be zero. That took care of the problem. We're thinking that the script became confused with the quota output under the Limit column for the root, which is "-". We would get a divide by zero error and the script would bomb. The box that we're running this from was using SCO. Snapshot Problems and CIFS

Look at this screen shot. It's of a users folders snapshot directory. http://planetevans.com/netapp/snapshot.jpg You can see that all the snapshots after nightly.3 are regular files. When I double click on them they want me to choose a program to open it with. This is of the directory \\filer\finance\llevinson\~snapshot If I go through \\filer\finance\~snapshot\<snapshot>\llevinson I can access everything just fine. Also several days ago (the day that lines up with the bad snapshots) everything from \\filer\finance\llevinson (the live data) disappeared and we had to pull it from the last snapshot (hourly.0 which was good) I'm working with NetApp right now. Originally I had 6.1.3R2 and they said there were several CIFS issues with that version of ONTAP, so I upgraded to 6.3.1R1. Unfortunately (or fortunately) it only happens once a month or less. disk_usage.pl script not working after upgrade to Ontap 6.3.1R1

We were using a great perl script that we downloaded from NOW to monitor our quotas called disk_usage.pl. After upgrading from Ontap 6.1.1R2P1 to 6.3.1R1 it no longer works except for just one of the qtrees. None of the permissions or qtree styles have changed. Anyone had a similar experience? I've been getting entry's in my logs that look like this since I upgrade ONTAP from 6.1.2R3 to 6.3.1R1 and updated the system documentation on the filer. Recoverable failing disk

Sage advice requested, please. I've been getting a couple of correctable failures on this drive per week for the last few months.
