Need Serial Console Concentrator

Well we were moving our new Sun 280R's into racks yestarday and one of my Unix team guys went to plug in an *old* P120 Intel box to use as a console device when the P/S went south hard. The spike tripped the main breaker on an OLD OLD OLD PDU which the PC was plugged into. I'm still wondering why the TWO smaller breakers (one on the Sun rack the PC was using power from, and one on the PDU supplying the 30 Amp to the Sun rack) in between didn't trip first. Know what else was on that PDU? The IBM Mainframe. After a 45 min IPL we lost half a days work.... No the NetApp was on two separate house circuits and stayed up. :-) I've been trying to get them to buy me a Console concentrator but I get those blank stares... What is that and what does it do? Why can't you use Telnet? Well I shall make a good case for a concentrator today... Can you all send me your vendor of choice for Concentrators again? I know it came up here just a little while ago. I need to collect vendors and hit them up for this while the issue is hot. Thanks Bob Borowicz

What version of Linux? If its 7.3, then do a search on NOW for redhat 7.3+NFS. Its a known bug,a nd the RH Kernel needs upgrading to fix it properly. Hi all! Is someone having a lot of linux clients mounted a toaster via nfs over tcp? I have a mixed environment of linux, bsd and sunos clients. When I run "netdiag" here the toaster finds all linux hosts not to perform like they should: Average size of NFS TCP packets received from host: foo is 461. This is less than the MTU (1500 bytes) of the interface involved in the data transfer. The maximum segment size being used by TCP for this host is: 1460. Low average size of packets received by this system might be because of a misconfigured client system, or a poorly written client application. Is someone else seeing such output from netdiag? I'm trying to locate a performance problem only appearing on linux hosts when the filer is under (heavy) load and a snapmirror proc from a second toaster is started. APC UPS Monitoring

Dear Toasters, Can anyone please give me some tips on APC-UPS monitoring. I have many APC Smart UPS'es and i use them to protect my File Servers. In the past when we used Sun hardware, we used to use the "Powerchute" software from APC. Now APC needs you to run some sort of Windows-box to be able to monitor all your machines. I heard about apcupsd on another list and gave that a shot and it seems to do a pretty decent job when it comes to linux. To protect my NetApp's, i am planning to use apcupsd on a linux machine and then try and somehow "correctly" use it to shutdown the netapp. I need to be careful about shutting down the netapp ONLY when the power is down and not every time the linux machine needs to be brought down.(so maybe an rc script WONT work) Any ideas ? When you use nfsstat -l you will get a list of clients that shows you which of them do the highest percentage of nfsops on your filer. Netapp states clearly that a 540 can't even USE a FCAL. None the less it works, and works well. That config info was all set up in the days of 18 GB and smaller disks. How much storage on a 540?

We have a 540 with 5.3.7R3. Does anyone know the real limit on the max storage we can put on it, currently we have a shelf of 4 GB disks (/vol0) and an FCAL shelf of 36 GB disks (241 GB) /vol1 I know the physical limit of FCAL is 8 shelves/loop but how many can be used effectivly. A few years ago we set up a 220 with extra SCSI controllers and MANY shelves. It turned out that you could add disks to a running system and fill many more shelves that the machine was supposed to hold, However when you rebooted... (paraphrased). Sorry, too many disks... Oh sorry your volume is missing too many disks bye bye... So has anyone there put 2? 3? more FCAL shelves on a 540? ----- Stephen C. snmp qtree index

Hi, I'm setting up monitoring of a qtree space usage via snmp. To do this I had to find out what the OID is that represents this qtree. Does anyone have any suggestions on easily getting this information short of doing an snmwalk and actually looking for it in the output ??? I thought that the qtree ID number would correlate with the snmp index for the qrKBytesUsed, qrFilesUsed and rPathName. But it does not. NFS/snapshot activity log

What do people do to track NFS activity on their filers? Basically a real-time audit log on the filer showing NFS calls, file sizes, pathname info, uid, etc. I often run into situations where I can see a filer filling up very quickly (or the snapshot reserve doing the same thing), but no way of figuring who/what is doing it. I could sniff the network for NFS packets and decode them, but it seems the best place to look for this information is on the filer. It can probably make better sense of NFS streams than picking off individual packets. On a related note, are there any utilities available for more granular reporting on snapshot usage? Like being able to tell which file or directory or uid is occupying what percentage of the snapshot reserve? You can use nfsstat like this: options nfs.per_client_stats.enable on nfsstat -z This causes the filer to accumulate per client nfs statistics and nfsstat -z zeroes all counters. Now let the filer run for a little while and run nfsstat -l This will give you a summary of total nfs ops by each client since the nfsstat -z. This will allow you to determine which clients are "hot". To see detailed counts for a particular client, use nfsstat -h hostname This will show if the client is doing any writes. Legato backup failing on CIFS share

I'm trying to do CIFS mount backup on a Legato Windows 2000 Client. I mount a NetApp (DOT 6.3.1) share on the box which becomes the "J" drive. The legato group run fails with the following error. Anybody seen this before?
