F330 fun

So a friend of mine gave me an f330 and four DEC BA350 shelves. The f330 needs nvram batteries (and more nvram simms if anybody wants to get rid of some, but that can wait. It has four simms) but now the challenge is to give this thing as much storage as possible. Because of the BA350s I'm limited to 1" disks (1.6" don't fit well in the cans). I'm wondering what the biggest disks I can buy are? I've got four narrow scsi channels so I'm assuming I can get 28 disks attached to this thing. 28*36 is ~1tb raw capacity (I figure 700-800GB usable?) The question is, can I put 36 gig disks on an F330? If so which ones? If not, then which 18s work, which 9s? This is for a home network, mostly for archiving video projects and recorded TV shows so I'm not looking to buy disks direct from netapp, nor am I looking for support for the filer. I'm assuming that when (hopefully not "if") something comes of Bill's hobbiest program that I'll be able to get OS media and licenses from that. I guess this goes along with the "how far past spec can you push a toaster" ideas that have floated past recently. daniel

Yes, However, you will need a VMWare extension to Windows XP. To be honest, if you have a spare outdated computer standing around then it is easy to install linux and then to run the simulator on it. You do not need much linux knowledge to get it to work, even if you have never installed linux it should only take a few hours to learn how to install a mininal system that is sufficient for the simulator. Dave: An even better way for users to play with ONTAP is, of course, to use a "real McCoy" version of ONTAP running on an old NetApp filer head and FC shelf. If solely for the purpose of "experimentation" in the support of a production system, would NetApp be hung up on licensing issues? Thanks. What is the largest disks you can put in an FC9 shelf? I'd like to make the jump to 144gb drives from 36gb if possible. Need Serial Console Concentrator

Well we were moving our new Sun 280R's into racks yestarday and one of my Unix team guys went to plug in an *old* P120 Intel box to use as a console device when the P/S went south hard. The spike tripped the main breaker on an OLD OLD OLD PDU which the PC was plugged into. I'm still wondering why the TWO smaller breakers (one on the Sun rack the PC was using power from, and one on the PDU supplying the 30 Amp to the Sun rack) in between didn't trip first. Know what else was on that PDU? The IBM Mainframe. After a 45 min IPL we lost half a days work.... No the NetApp was on two separate house circuits and stayed up. :-) I've been trying to get them to buy me a Console concentrator but I get those blank stares... What is that and what does it do? Why can't you use Telnet? Well I shall make a good case for a concentrator today... Can you all send me your vendor of choice for Concentrators again? I know it came up here just a little while ago. What version of Linux? If its 7.3, then do a search on NOW for redhat 7.3+NFS. Its a known bug,a nd the RH Kernel needs upgrading to fix it properly. Hi all! Is someone having a lot of linux clients mounted a toaster via nfs over tcp? I have a mixed environment of linux, bsd and sunos clients. When I run "netdiag" here the toaster finds all linux hosts not to perform like they should: Average size of NFS TCP packets received from host: foo is 461. This is less than the MTU (1500 bytes) of the interface involved in the data transfer. The maximum segment size being used by TCP for this host is: 1460. Low average size of packets received by this system might be because of a misconfigured client system, or a poorly written client application. Is someone else seeing such output from netdiag? F230 shelf compatibility

APC UPS Monitoring

Dear Toasters, Can anyone please give me some tips on APC-UPS monitoring. I have many APC Smart UPS'es and i use them to protect my File Servers. In the past when we used Sun hardware, we used to use the "Powerchute" software from APC. Now APC needs you to run some sort of Windows-box to be able to monitor all your machines. I heard about apcupsd on another list and gave that a shot and it seems to do a pretty decent job when it comes to linux. To protect my NetApp's, i am planning to use apcupsd on a linux machine and then try and somehow "correctly" use it to shutdown the netapp. I need to be careful about shutting down the netapp ONLY when the power is down and not every time the linux machine needs to be brought down.(so maybe an rc script WONT work) Any ideas ? When you use nfsstat -l you will get a list of clients that shows you which of them do the highest percentage of nfsops on your filer. Netapp states clearly that a 540 can't even USE a FCAL. None the less it works, and works well. That config info was all set up in the days of 18 GB and smaller disks. How much storage on a 540?

We have a 540 with 5.3.7R3. Does anyone know the real limit on the max storage we can put on it, currently we have a shelf of 4 GB disks (/vol0) and an FCAL shelf of 36 GB disks (241 GB) /vol1 I know the physical limit of FCAL is 8 shelves/loop but how many can be used effectivly. A few years ago we set up a 220 with extra SCSI controllers and MANY shelves. It turned out that you could add disks to a running system and fill many more shelves that the machine was supposed to hold, However when you rebooted... (paraphrased). Sorry, too many disks... Oh sorry your volume is missing too many disks bye bye... So has anyone there put 2? 3? more FCAL shelves on a 540? ----- Stephen C.
