Completely filling and aggregate

Has anyone ever completely, completely (like with luns and overallocation) filled an aggregate? Were you able to reuse the aggregate again once you reduced the space (presumably by shrinking or deleting a volume or two)? Assume this is not the root aggregate. Putting aside how bad it is, how all the vols will fill and luns will go offline, how the performance will never be right, fragmentation, etc, this is recoverable, right? I'm testing a competitor's product- known for thin provisioning- and it completely went off the rails after I did this accidentally. I mean... Delete everything, start over, and a big fat "don't do that then" from support. TIA, Fred

Hi, Anyone using Netbackup 7.6.0.1 to backup via three way NDMP, a CIFS share/volume on cDOT inside a VServer? It just ain't working for me. I suspect I need to upgrade to Netbackup 7.7, but before I go that route... I'm looking for other options. Basically, I want to have the NDMP data flow over the network to the Netbackup server, then from there to Tape. I don't have/want direct attached SAN tape drives at this time on our four node cluster. It's just one single volume I need backed up right now. Thanks, John

Slow SMB connections from 8.3 to some Mac clients

You're been hearing from me a lot lately. We're having trouble with a small but distinct number of Mac users connecting via either CIFS or SMB and getting slow connections, an rsync of a test file shows a transfer speed of 500KB/s. Most of the problem children are older versions but at least one is running El Capitan, the latest greatest. On the clients that have the problem, they have it reliably. Sounds like a workstation issue but we're still hoping to give the users a solution. Anybody know of any known issues with Macs and CDOT 8.3? Solutions? Randy

Hey Randy and Richard, A quick note: I am in no way a programmer, I just pretend to be one when I need to get stuff done. My code is likely ugly. Covering most of the issues called out in this thread. The doc file error means zedi can't run the small handful of zapis that only exist in 8.3 or later as it does not yet know about them. It's not going to prevent zapis that exist in both zedi and 8.3 from working. Nor will it affect your abilities to run zapis with python or any language by hand. Before I share an example that works, a quick note on the page you linked: http://community.netapp.com/t5/Software-Development-Kit-SDK-and-API-Discuss… It talks about how when iterating through xml, from a data collection perspective you can either get a list of all children, or get a child object given the name, but there is no clear documentation on how to get the content of an xml element. This is of course a requirement to get stuff done. I struggled with this initially as well, and that page explained it enough to me to get stuff working. It's not really a bug, more a lack of clear documentation on the calls you can do on elements. For example, if you have this: <share> <name>awesomeshare</name> <path>/project/location</path> </share> You can iterate through the share children and get objects for the name and path (the children_get() call), or you can pull the name object specifically with child_get('name'), but you want that 'awesomeshare', or that '/project/location' property value, not just an object for the property/value combination. The documentation (still?) lacks a clear indication on how to get the value inside of an xml element. Zulanch answers it: you do a object.element['content'] to get that inside information. The python sdk code itself has not really changed in years it looks like, as it's a convenient wrapper around builtin xml libraries and is expected to work in the same form for all zapis for the past years (decade?). Here's a basic working python script example that pulls data over zapi to get you going, using that .element call extensively; it at least works against 8.3.1. http://pastebin.com/Kpm6nJmq The example script is very basic and creates a python list of returned elements with a python dictionary of properties for each one, much easier to handle in python than the raw xml returned by the sdk. It's a scraper, it does not push changes. The script is not optimal, especially if elements get really deep, but should work for most queries and can easily be extended. I bet libraries like xmltodict can do this in a more scalable way, I'm doing all the work by hand in this example. At least the raw code should give you a very good idea on how to make zapi calls work in python. I also cover the max records part and do subsequent calls that start where the previous zapi response left off to get that comprehensive table of data. Notes on script: It takes a cluster mgmt ip or hostname, and a zapi call as input strings. It uses NaServer and NaElement to get the xml. It has the default max records of 20 set to keep pressure on the cluster low in maintaining records in memory before returning to clients (management processes do not like to do too much work, imagine them having to keep thousands of objects in memory, each with hundreds of properties before they can return them, while a dozen other management tools are hitting the same cluster against the same node that hosts the cluster mgmt lif. I don't want to be complicit in an api DOS of my own system when pulling inventory if I don't need to be), but will continue pulling 20 items sequentially until all items for a given zapi are pulled (in below example the items are shares, but it can also get volumes, aggregates, ports, disks, lifs etc. with the associated zapi) Below lines pull in the script, invoke the function and print the output. The script depends on a creds file with a username and password. The script expects the relevant user to have ontapi (at least read only) access. (or do things your own way and modify it to use certs instead). Anybody using OnCommand Performance Manager (OPM)?

Our new 8.3 cluster is in production, finished migrating the last vservers to it last weekend, and suddenly we're getting ~6 alerts a day from an OPM server set up by a co-worker who's left the organization. I confess I've barely looked at the thing until now. Whenever I go to investigate the details of the latest "incident" I find that it's not a problem, i.e. latency on a volume "jumped" from <1ms to ~5ms. Looks like the application is looking for deviation from a dynamically determined baseline and I'm not seeing any option for tweaking parameters or limits. Six false alarms a day makes this effectively useless. Anybody else using this app? Got any tips on making it useful? Randy

python API guidance for cluster mode CIFS share reporting/management

Hello All, I'm working on automating the synchronizing of CIFS shares on the vservers of one 8.3 cluster to their DR mirrors on another cluster. It occurs to me that this might be useful to other shops so I'm trying to up my game from my usual fairly sloppy code i.e. http://xkcd.com/1513/ with lots of SSH calls to the CLI and parsing text output sequentially, to something portable and standard enough to share. Taking a look at the SDK/API with ZEDI as a guide to the objects involved and having a tough time getting started (never used much XML either). To make things muddier, the API I'm looking at "cifs-share-get-iter" apparently has a bug (http://community.netapp.com/t5/Software-Development-Kit-SDK-and-API-Discuss…) that I don't totally get. Maybe if I could understand the object as it's supposed to work first. Any experience with the API? Looks like it's a few years old, is it used with 8.3? Hope to hear from you, Randy in Seattle

Hey, this did work, indeed – at least the disk could be unfailed with `disk unfail –s` here on 8.1.4 in a different filer; I’m currently zeroing them and will then remove_ownership and bring them back to the older filer. Of course, this didn't work out as easy as it should, so maybe some could help me get this disk going. Mac OSX 10.11 CIFS client?

Hi all, Does anyone have Mac OSX 10.11 ('El Capitan') clients accessing a NetApp CIFS share? 10.11 isn't in the compatibility matrix yet, but I have a few overzealous Mac users that have already upgraded (sigh). We've always has mixed results with Mac clients, but since upgrading they are intermittently unable to access many folders that they should (and did) have access to. Such folders are showing up with a lock icon. There's nothing useful so far in the CIFS audit logs or the messages file. I'm firing up sectrace now. Wonder if anyone has been down this road already? Oh this filer is an FAS-2240-4, currently running 8.2.1 7-mode. Thanks! Roy McMorran

Hi Everyone, I'm not exactly sure what I'm asking for, but here goes . . . Does Netapp, or someone else, have analytics software that will crawl through CIFS shares and provide info on the files? Things like director sizes, storage hogs, size/number of file types, file/size per owner, etc. In other words, software to help understand and manage files in a shares. I didn't see anything on NetApp's web site like this. Basic active/standy 7mode VIF failover config

Hi all - I have a bit of a throw-back question. I swear I've read all the docs availalbe (HA 7-mode config guide, system admin guide, network mangement guide, ethernet storage design TR) but I am still confused on how to properly configure a 7mode HA VIF failover in a situation where you only have one VIF that needs to float to a standby controller. Support tells me this is "not a common configuration" and that the solution is to have a data IP on both controllers, even if both controllers are not being used in active/active. I realize that I can do an ifconfig on each controller, with the partner option specifying the other node's IP/interface. However, this particular filer is just a large aggregate, single volume, single NFS access IP. So I don't see a point to having a data IP on the other controller... According to the ifconfig man page ( https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1196979/html/man1/na_ifconfig.1.html), this is possible: "On a node in an HA pair, a network interface performs one of these roles: ... A standby network interface for the partner. That is, if the partner fails, the network interface works on behalf of the partner. When the node is not in takeover mode, the network interface is idle. A network interface performs this role if it does not have a local IP address but a partner IP address, which you assign by the *partner* option of the *ifconfig* command. The node maps a partner IP address to a shared or standby interface when the node initiates a takeover operation. In takeover mode, all requests destined for the partner IP address are serviced by the shared or standby interface. Also, in partner mode, if a command takes a network interface name as an argument, enter the network interface name of the failed node. The command is executed on the shared or standby interface on the live node. Similarly, in partner mode, a command for displaying network interface information displays the network interface name of the failed node, even though the command is serviced by the shared or standby interface on the live node." Help me think this through. fcp zone show "too large"

I've been troubleshooting a FCOE problem - just tried to inspect the zon set with "fcp zone show" and got back an error that the zoneset is "too large". I don't think it is - this is a pretty small config, perhaps 50 hosts tops. So I think it must be something else. (Or maybe it isn't - I don't have direct access to the switch, so I can't say for sure). Has anyone run into this? (Or can offer alternatives for returning subsets of the zoneset from the filer end?)

FAS8020 HA pair in 1 chassis -- cluster interconnect ?

Hello, I've currently got a FAS3240 HA pair (with each controller in its own chassis). I am swapping the heads with a FAS8020 HA pair. This is 7-mode 8.2.x. With the current 3240's..there are a cluster interconnects that runs between c0a and c0b on both controllers. The new 8020 is a HA pair in one chassis. Are cluster interconnects required ? The Installation and Setup Instructions guide shows it differently for cDOT and 7-mode.. For cDOT is says to connect e0a to e0a and e0b to e0b for the cluster interconnect. This is listed as a "switchless cluster" for cDOT. (no mention of 7-mode here) For 7-mode and cDot for a "switched HA configuration", it has e0a and e0b for both heads going the upstream switches. The guide I'm talking about is at: library.netapp.com/ecm/ecm_download_file/ECMP1199906 Install Hardware (blue 2) step 2.2 I am not planning on using e0a or e0b for networking at all. The purchase did not come with any cables that will work between these ports. Thanks. Paul

Help with FTP

Hi, Data ONTAP Release 8.1.2P1 7-Mode We received a request to provide FTP access to a filer. Here is what they want: - they have 4 CIFS shares, each is in a separate vol/qtree (prod, test, qa, whatever) - from a AIX system, they want to FTP to the filer, access the each of the vol/qtree shares, and download files - they want to do this via Active Directory ID's and security - I believe they want to do this via 4 separate ID's - one per share, but I think using just one may be ok I've been reading about FTP on OnTap. I think I see how to enable FTP with AD ID's (NTLM style). I can then have ID's all access a single dir, or have each ID access it's own home dir. I don't see any way to specify a particular vol/qtree per AD ID. For Unix style access I could create separate ID's in the /etc/passwd file with specific vol/qtree home dirs, which I would make their CIFS vol/qtrees. But if I do this, I can't fine how the UNIX id's would access the CIFS file - it's two different security models. I'd like them to just mouth the CIFS shares to AIX, but they can't get it to work. I could use some advice! BMC access is denied.

Hi all, Has anyone ever seen a BMC deny access when using the root user password? I'm trying to reconfigure this system and get the BMC working, but whenever I SSH to the BMC it won't let me login using the root user password. I get a permission denied message as if the password were wrong. Things I have tried: BMC setup (several times with different IP addresses) BMC reboot (several times) Changed the root user password several times using passwd. Takeover/Giveback Verified that the password is less than 16 characters. Tried "root", "naroot", and "Administrator" to log into the BMC, all failed the same way. Ran through secureadmin setup again. Tried to SSH to the BMC from different hosts, both Windows and Linux. I can SSH to the controller itself just fine using the root user / password. Anyone have any other ideas or see something that I'm missing? The only thing I haven't done yet is power cycle the controller, and that's just because I'm not anywhere near it. Thanks, Brad

Cifs share access log

Greetings, Is there a way to have the system log what users connect via cifs AND also show what share they connect to? This is a 7.3.2 system. I've been trying various cifs options. I can see where it log who I am, and where I'm coming from, but not what I'm trying to access, or what share I mounted. Some mystery deletes have been occurring so we are trying to track down who may be accessing that particular share. Ideally I want to know when they connect and disconnect at a minimum so we have an idea when they were there. For now I just have a script checking cifs sessions and logging connections to the share to a file. I'd rather see it in messages or audit instead. File delete rate

Apologies if this seems a bit vague - I'm in need of a quick sanity check. Doing a qtree delete - it's taking 'a while'. This seems to be because it's deleting every file at a rate of 50-100 files per second, and there's about a million files in the qtree. Is that a 'reasonable' rate of deletion? (This is using an API based 'file-delete-file' operation, if that's relevant).

Can't rename a vserver in 8.3 and aliasing vserver names?

It's me again, Another bump we're still on is that due to 8.3's inability to rename a CIFS server and that we just 7MTT'd a home filer with ~3000 CIFS shares on it we instead aliased the new vserver to the old name "home" on our network. We removed the old vFiler from DNS and our AD, and removed all WINS entries. We added SPN's for the name "home" to the AD object for the new vserver. We already had a DNS alias for "homes" for the old vfiler to address some Mac compatibility issues. We added that CNAME in DNS as well, and an SPN for "homes" to the vserver's AD object. And we did take advantage of the 8.3 CLI tool for adding NetBIOS aliases, looks like a hack NA provided until they fix the run "cifs setup" tool without deleting the CIFS server. But we're still having a host of flakey access issues with Mac users who either can't connect to their home drives at all or get weirdness if they open Office documents and the like there. We're also having issues with Windows RDSH connections and User Profile mappings. Anybody else had fallout from the inability to rename a server? Any luck aliasing? Or should we just suck it up, recreate the CIFS server and recreate the shares? Hope to hear from you, Randy

NFS access to NTFS in 8.3?

Guys, We've just migrated our 7=mode "home drives" vFiler using 7MTT to a new 8.3 cluster and so far the process has been less than blissful. One immediate hurdle is each division in our organization has mostly CIFS/Windows users and some NFS/Linux users, with some overlap between them (users that need NFS access to NTFS data and vice versa). This means each division has an NTFS volume, with a UNIX qtree within it. And both areas are served via both CIFS and NFS. CIFS access to both file systems seems to be fine. NFS access to the UNIX qtrees is fine. Where we're flailing is getting NFS access to the NTFS volumes. The exports mount just fine (LDAP is set up for the vserver, and client machines are in a nisNetgroup object in our AD). But NFS users connecting to their NTFS home folders get "permission denied," they can't even cd into them. Done some digging with and without NA support with little luck so far. User mapping is correctly configured so that unix user names are mapping to AD names. But the filer isn't getting as far as mapping an incoming NFS connections UID to a user name. NA support seems to think we need to configure an LDAP client for this. But my recollection of setting up our 7-mode system (five years ago) was that none of this was necessary, I think that joining the vfiler's CIFS server to our AD was enough for this to work (it is for Isilon, anyway). Now I'm on the phone with support (literally) while we flail through a bunch of old KB's saying we need to modify our AD schema (vanilla 2K8 RFC-2307) or install MS SFU on our DC's (never needed to before) or create a custom schema for the vserver to accept our obviously exotic RFC-2307. And they're not exactly clear on how we do that. To add to the fun, we're finding that many/most changes to the existing LDAP client settings breaks our so-far-working-OK Export Policies/Rules controlling access to the NFS exports. So. Has anyone set up a vserver with NFS connections to an NTFS volume? How do you map connections? Hope to hear from you very soon... Randy in Seattle

ServiceNow Discovery of ONTAP Devices

Toasters, Has anybody used ServiceNow to discover NetApp arrays running Data ONTAP 8.1 7-Mode? My understanding is the Data ONTAP SMI-S Provider is required. We setup the Linux based Data ONTAP SMI-S Provider v5.1.2, added the array as a managed host and added an SMI-S agent credential for ServiceNow. ServiceNow successfully authenticates to the SMI-S agent and completes the entire CIM probe but spits out a warning on one of the CIM queries. Some information is correctly classified and displayed in ServiceNow but, overall, the array information provided by the CIM probe seems to be lacking. Manually executing "smis class root/ontap niall" on the SMI-S agent machine seems to return just about every attribute of the managed NetApp array. This tells me that the SMI-S agent to array communication is running just fine. My guess is the problem is with the CIM query ServiceNow is running against the SMI-S agent. Unfortunately, my visibility into ServiceNow is restricted so I can't confirm. Anybody using ServiceNow to discover arrays running Data ONTAP? Are you seeing what you believe to be complete information? Did you have to do a lot of tweaking to the default CIM probe? -Phil
