blade servers to Filer

Hi Toasters, We are migrating many of the current servers to HP blade servers. The Server Team is considering connecting to the Filers/SAN on the back end for storage. I know this is not a problem. Some of the applications servers only need 4GB of space so leaving it on the DAS will be better. Want to best utilize the Filers since not every blade server is a good candidate for NAS if DAS will suffice. What are some criteria to use when considering connecting blade servers to the Filers? Any suggestion is appreciated. cheers, Marcus Bui

A few items to clarify: - The environment have both Filers (F880c, F820) and SAN (Sun,HDS). Filers running CIFS only. - All HP blade servers are Windows client. - Have not implemented or tested iSCSI. Probably not any time soon. - The blade servers will have mirrored drives, probably 36GB drives, with 9GB partition for OS. FDDI adapters in FAS900 filers?

Hello toasters, Has anyone used the FDDI network adapter X1105 (DEC3002) on a FAS940 or FAS960 filer? It is not approved according the the NOW site, but has anyone tried it? I have this card currently working, and supported, in F840 machines and plan to replace these with the 900 series. Considerable leverage is being applied to maintain this service. How the heck do you get the lid of a C1100?

Searched for a hardware guide for detailed stuff on the 1100, but didn't find anything other than the basic hardware install guide. I wan tto get inside this baby and take a look at it, but I can't figure out how to get the lid off. Something in the front/center seems to be holding it, but I'll be hornswoggled if I can find a screw or anything. Any tip appreciated. Thanks.

I've never used this product but it seems to provide functionality that is already present on the filer; i.e. an NDMP TAPE Server. You could buy one or more LTO2 drives (either SCSI or FC version), appropriate card(s) for one of your filers, and connect the drives up directly to one of your filers. You would then configure the backup software to perform NDMP backups in one of two ways depending on the filer. For the filer with the drives physically attached the setup can be considered local because the filer is functioning as both the NDMP DATA and TAPE servers. For the other filers without physical connectivity to the drives these function in a 3-way setup, with the filer without the drives functioning as the NDMP DATA server, and the filer with the drives functioning as the NDMP TAPE server. The choice is yours, use the functionality native to a filer (or as required by NDMP v2 actually) or buy a seperate box to provide it. -Chris P.S. I am just quoting my learned college in Mentor, who was advised by Rational that incremental backups were not the way to go. I see your point that there's little you can do with a volume of your size, but since we are talking about a database with file history, should you suffer any mishap in your backup software, would that cause a major problem in your ability to restore? We use netbackup, and I know there are times when the software misses a backup. It did last night! Hi Kumar, We are CC users on NetApps. It works great! Question 1. I would say yes, as it means you can set a no quotas style volume and not worry about your CC data swallowing up all your available resource. Question 2. As per the info above I would say no. Keep the CC data separate. There seems to be no official reason for this, but it make managing it all easier. Question 3. Locking the vobs is relatively easy. We use a Perl script that another message board regular and employ of our company devised for us. It simply runs a lock command on all vobs, runs a snapshot command on the filer volume then unlocks all the vobs. The snapshot can then be backed up at leisure. I will ask him if he thinks this is something he could publish. This kind of adds weight to the argument for having a separate volume. You are not wise to do incremental backups of CC data. There is no real way to restore an incremental, so full backups are required, and this means nightly full backups of the whole CC data. If you are chucking other data in there as well this means full nightly backups of ALL your data! CC data grows fast, so will be a big lump on its own. Hope this helps. Dinostor TapeServer

Anyone out there using this product? (http://www.dinostor.com). If so, with which tape library and which backup software package? Since I'm setting up my NetApps from scratch and have no FCP equipment I would really like to build a GbE solution. However, the boss wants LTO2 and so far no one has a GbE solution for LTO2 -- most seem to be several months away. Also, I don't want to dedicate a tape library to one particular NetApp as I expect we will get a couple more in the not so distant future. Thanks again.

Actually, this would require at least one trust to be established between NTDom1 and NTDom2. NTDom2 must be trusting of NTDom1 in order for FilerB to see the Global Groups in NTDom1. If there's no trust, then there isn't a way to see/use the groups in the other domain. However, once you create the trust, you shouldn't have to do anything else (i.e. no local groups to manage). FilerB should be able to see all groups in NTDom1. Now assuming that this is for disaster recovery, there is a small problem. Let's say Mr. Stay-Puft takes out SiteA. NTDom1 no longer exists so FilerB is unable to resolve SID information on NTDom1 global groups (the effect is no access for anyone with an account in NTDom1). A simple, but effective remedy for this would be installing a BDC for NTDom1 one at SiteB. When Mr. Stay-Puft comes around, all you have to do is promote the BDC for NTDom1 at SiteB to the PDC for NTDom1. FilerB won't have any problems in this case. Question about mirroring

NTDom1 and NTDom2 are Windows NT domains, Active Directory is not implemented, and their is no trust relationship between the two NT Domains. FilerA has been using global groups and users from NTDom1 on its ACL's. SiteA along with FilerA ceases to exist for whatever reason. SiteB breaks the mirror and brings the volumes mirrored from FilerA online. Is it possible to access the files on those shares since NTDom1 no longer exists?

Question about Multistore

Scenario: (ONTAP 6.4.1) FilerA at SiteA in NTDomA has some standard volumes being accessed via UNC. Licensed protocols are CIFS, iSCSI, and VLD. It also has a couple of volumes with iSCSI LUN's and a couple more with VLD's. These volumes are being mirrored to FilerB at SiteB in NTDomB. However, there is an NTDomA WinNT BDC at SiteB in the same IP network as FilerB. FilerB has licensed Multistore and has created VFilerA and is mirroring the volumes on FilerA onto VFilerA. SiteA ceases to exist. The mirrors are broken and the volumes on VFilerA are brought online. Servers which have been prestaged at SiteB are brought online in NTDomA. Question: Will the servers be able to acces all of the volumes? I know the standard volumes using UNC will. Will the iSCSI and VLD ones be accessible (assuming SnapDrive is installed on servers wishing to use VLD's and iSCSI initiator is installed on ones wishing to use iSCSI). Thanks in advance.

These groups would, of course, have to be documented so that they can be created on FilerB in NTDom2 should the need ever arise. The groups on FilerB would then be populated with users from NTDom2. Both are in Windows networks and both are using CIFS. SiteA is in NTDom1 and SiteB is in NTDom2. NTDom1 and NTDom2 are Windows NT domains, Active Directory is not implemented, and their is no trust relationship between the two NT Domains. FilerA has been using global groups and users from NTDom1 on its ACL's. SiteA along with FilerA ceases to exist for whatever reason. SiteB breaks the mirror and brings the volumes mirrored from FilerA online. Is it possible to access the files on those shares since NTDom1 no longer exists?
