Hi Rahul, Some answers: a) I would have a separate volume with at least 6 to 8 disks. b) Yes, you could but I wouldn't recommend it. It just makes things more complicated to troubleshoot. c) Yes. d) It depends on what other data you have on that same volume. If it is just home directory or just files then it really doesn't matter. You have to lock the VOB, snapshot the volume where the VOB data is and then unlock the VOB. Actually, this would require at least one trust to be established between NTDom1 and NTDom2. NTDom2 must be trusting of NTDom1 in order for FilerB to see the Global Groups in NTDom1. If there's no trust, then there isn't a way to see/use the groups in the other domain. However, once you create the trust, you shouldn't have to do anything else (i.e. no local groups to manage). FilerB should be able to see all groups in NTDom1. Now assuming that this is for disaster recovery, there is a small problem. Let's say Mr. Stay-Puft takes out SiteA. NTDom1 no longer exists so FilerB is unable to resolve SID information on NTDom1 global groups (the effect is no access for anyone with an account in NTDom1). A simple, but effective remedy for this would be installing a BDC for NTDom1 one at SiteB. When Mr. Stay-Puft comes around, all you have to do is promote the BDC for NTDom1 at SiteB to the PDC for NTDom1. FilerB won't have any problems in this case. Question about Multistore

Scenario: (ONTAP 6.4.1) FilerA at SiteA in NTDomA has some standard volumes being accessed via UNC. Licensed protocols are CIFS, iSCSI, and VLD. It also has a couple of volumes with iSCSI LUN's and a couple more with VLD's. These volumes are being mirrored to FilerB at SiteB in NTDomB. However, there is an NTDomA WinNT BDC at SiteB in the same IP network as FilerB. FilerB has licensed Multistore and has created VFilerA and is mirroring the volumes on FilerA onto VFilerA. SiteA ceases to exist. The mirrors are broken and the volumes on VFilerA are brought online. Servers which have been prestaged at SiteB are brought online in NTDomA. Question: Will the servers be able to acces all of the volumes? I know the standard volumes using UNC will. Will the iSCSI and VLD ones be accessible (assuming SnapDrive is installed on servers wishing to use VLD's and iSCSI initiator is installed on ones wishing to use iSCSI). Thanks in advance.

An idea I came up with and am currently testing is: Connect to FilerA via a Win2K management console and add local groups. Then add users from NTDom1 to the FilerA groups. These groups would, of course, have to be documented so that they can be created on FilerB in NTDom2 should the need ever arise. The groups on FilerB would then be populated with users from NTDom2. limitation path length

Hi all, there is a path length limitation of 256 characters for cifs. ok, I know to bypass it with multiple shares or the subst- command. Question: Is there a theoretical or/and a practical limitation of the path length on the part of NetApp WAFL? I can not find anything about the path length in NOW, just some hints to be careful with a "very,very" deep path. I also know, that I can increase the maxdirsize to 64MB Default is 10MB ca. 300.000 files. I am talking about a F810 with 6.2.1. I could imagine there is a limitation by the RAM. thanks in advance Phil

I have a dual P4000 NDMP/SCSI hybrid with Legato Networker on a Solaris server. The GigE NDMP drives appear as remote devices in Networker, I assume Netbackup has something similiar. In Networker, you just add a device as 'rd=drive-hostname:/dev/nst0'. Jumbo frames are a must have. We've had our unit for about a year, but just upgraded the switch to one that supports jumbo frames. Backup speed went from 11MB/s without jumbo frames to 18MB/s with jumbo frames. We've been generally happy with it. All enterprise backup sw/hw solutions suck, and this one doesn't suck to badly. John

Anyone familiar with this tape library in a GbE/iSCSI environment? I'm particularly interested in knowing how the GbE interfaces are added and managed. Also how well this unit works using Veritas NetBackup on a Win2K server as the master controller and the NDMP option on the Network Appliance filer.

DNS and CIFS win2k ?

Hi Anyone knows what to add into my DNS database file to let our filer understand what I want to do ? I use BIND 9.2.2 on a UNIX box, not M$ DNS here is the error message during cifs setup Do you want to modify this name? [no]: CIFS supports three types of user authentication: 1. Windows Domain authentication. 2. Windows Workgroup authentication using the filer's user accounts. 3. /etc/passwd and/or NIS/LDAP based authentication. What type of authentication will this filer use? [1]: 1 The filer will use Windows Domain authentication. Enter the Windows Domain for the filer []:PLONK This seems to be a Windows 2000 domain, but CIFS cannot locate the '_ldap' services for PLONK in DNS. CIFS cannot install as a native Windows 2000 server in this domain until this situation is rectified. If you continue with setup, this filer will attempt to join PLONK as an NT4 server. Do you wish to continue and join PLONK in NT4 mode? [yes]: no CIFS local server is shutting down... CIFS local server has shut down... ONTAP Simulator available on NOW

Some of you may know that NetApp Engineering uses an ONTAP Simulator as part of our development process. (The simulator runs all of ONTAP as a process under Linux. At a very low level, we spoof the disk drivers, so that disks are simulated by local files. We spoof the network drivers by putting the Linux Ethernet card into promiscuous mode and creating a fake MAC address associated with the simulator.) Enough technical details. The point of this message is that we are now making the simulator available to customers so that they can experiment with ONTAP features and commands without putting production systems at risk. I have had many customers tell me that they wished they had a way to play with new releases and new features, but they didn't have a safe place to do it. Just to be clear: This is not production software. It's ONTAP running on top of Linux, so don't use it for performance testing. We have no formal support program. Don't call NetApp support. This is an "as is" tool. (Some restrictions may apply. :-) On the other hand, I think you will find the simulator to be very useful for experimenting with ONTAP. Hundreds of NetApp engineers use it every day, and we have been using the simulator for over a year in NetApp training classes. Not only can you experiment with the features of a single filer, but you can run multiple simulators and experiment with features like SnapMirror, SnapVault, and Cluster Fail Over. It doesn't support Fibre Channel, because that would take more hardware, but it does support iSCSI and all of the other TCP/IP protocols, including NFS, CIFS, HTTP and FTP, as well as network management protocols like SNMP and NDMP. 1000Base-SX Gigabit Ethernet cable spec

Hi, Anyone using their 1000Base-SX Gigabit Ethernet card? (Mine's on an F630.) Is the cable specification for it? SC to SC - Multimode Duplex Fiber Optic Patch Cable. 62.5/125 µm I'm going to purchase a 1000Base-SX to 1000Base-TX converter so that I can hook this old beast up to our copper gigabit switch. The converters are all SC connectors. I have no experience with this fiber optic stuff. The Gigabit card looks like the little square plugs (SC) but I can't find anything in the hardware specs for the F630. There is a lot of discussion about the Fiber Channel cable specs. Turned out that I had DNS enabled on the filer. Turning DNS off made everything function like it should -- i.e. immediate response from both the server-filer connection and network-filer connection. I tried to run from a knoppix system, but it seems that the kernel is too new 2.4.20. I'm getting only a segmentation fault. Any trick there or just have to find an older release? To be honest, if you have a spare outdated computer standing around then it is easy to install linux and then to run the simulator on it. This week I installed SuSE 8.0 Profession with minimal system on a Pentium 90 with 48 MB RAM and a 800MB IDE harddisk to be able to run the simulator. This machine is a bit low on memory, but I decided to try it before adding a bit more RAM. But the simulator runs, although with a lot of disk activity due to paging. It might be old and slow, but it is sufficient for me if I want to check something and I believe that it will work good enough if I find some RAM in my junkbox. I also installed a minimal linux on an old AMD K6-2 333Mhz with 128MB and 6 GB Harddisk. This system runs the simulator perfectly without any complaints. The interesting part is that I also installed a minimal linux on a machine with an AMD Duron 1300, 256MB and a fast 40GB harddisk but the performance jump from the AMD K6-2 isn't that noticable. Actually this machine was the most difficult to install due to a problem with the mainboard under linux. If you would like to give it a try then I suggest you join the simulator mailing list where I can help you to get linux to work, but please note: I don't know much about linux, my specialisation is Windows 2000. Just to be clear: This is not production software. It's ONTAP running on top of Linux, so don't use it for performance testing. We have no formal support program. Don't call NetApp support. This is an "as is" tool. (Some restrictions may apply. :-) On the other hand, I think you will find the simulator to be very useful for experimenting with ONTAP. Hundreds of NetApp engineers use it every day, and we have been using the simulator for over a year in NetApp training classes. Not only can you experiment with the features of a single filer, but you can run multiple simulators and experiment with features like SnapMirror, SnapVault, and Cluster Fail Over. It doesn't support Fibre Channel, because that would take more hardware, but it does support iSCSI and all of the other TCP/IP protocols, including NFS, CIFS, HTTP and FTP, as well as network management protocols like SNMP and NDMP. We have created a category in the NOW community forums called "ONTAP Simulator" that can be accessed at <http://forums.netapp.com/showcategory.asp?cid=172>. And finally, we have created a majordomo mailing list that people can join at xdl-simulator(a)netapp.com. (You know the drill. To join send to majordomo(a)netapp.com, not to the simulator list itself.) And of course, feel free to talk about it here on toasters. Sales Quote and Adding Shelves

I'm working with my salesman on adding a DS14 shelf to my F810 filer. (already have one DS14 shelf) He's put in the quote: 2x NetApp DS14 LS Module, Copper-Copper Ports On my current DS14 shelf I have: 2x NetApp DS14 LS Module Cu-Cu Ports Do I need the Module's on the new shelf? Slow GbE Network

I'm doing some performance testing with an F810 that is connected to our network via the onboard 10/100 NIC. DNS, WINS, etc are configured on that interface. The F810 also has a dual port GbE NIC connected directly to a Win2K server that is also connected via 10/100 to the same network as the F810's onboard 10/100. When I try things such as rsh 192.168.2.1 date it takes a VERY long time to run. Also connecting via unc (e.g. \\192.168.2.1\c$) takes a lot longer than it does over the 10/100 network. I suspect the issue is really on the Win2K side and how it tries to find clients but I am not sure what to look at. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hey there, Our security department has a need to look up who has rights to particular folders (CIFS) on our filer cluster. We have used Bindview and FastLane Reporter and Enterprise Directory Reporter to find out about local storage. However, none of them seem to be able to look at the filer. We have contacted the individual companies but we get long pauses when we try to explain what a Filer is and how it works. Anyone using any software that tells you who has access to a particular folder or know of any tricks to make these type of software programs work? Thanks. Some security questions/wishes

Setting up two new filers, F810 and FAS940, in a new installation. ONTAP 6.4.1 1. Is there a way that I can permit certain users to view filer configurations and statistics without their having the root password or being given full adminstrative access? 2. Is there a way to force logons to the filer (be it console, SSL enabled FilerView) to use Windows groups rather than having to hand out the root password? 3. Is there a way to allow certain people to perform manual snapshots without their being given full admin access? Something akin to a Backup Operator. 4. Along the same lines of 3 above is it possible to permit those same people to restore snapshots on particular volumes without their being able to access other volumes?

Netapp ISCSI and AIXL 5.2

Has anyone had any luck configuring iscsi with an AIXL 5.2 client? I can't seem to get the client to communicate with the filer and thought I would probe the toaster community to see if anyone else has had any such luck. I got to work with Linux and that about it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Mark Allen
