Hi Kerry, The issue here is that the TSM backup server (AIX? NT/Win2K?) won't be able to understand the WAFL filesystem structure. So the most that is theoretically possible is a raw LUN block dump (I don't think TSM supports that anyway). What exactly do you mean by "SAN client"? If by that you mean that you have virtualised disks (LUNs managed by the filer accessed via VLD, iSCSI or FCP) that are stored on your filer then yes, TSM may be able to mount the LUN as it will use a filesystem layout that such as NTFS or JFS that TSM will understand. If however you mean FC block I/O access to a WAFL filesystem - which is what your post implies - then no, and it makes no sense to try. This is where NDMP will provide more value depending on the TSM version you are running. If you can post to toasters or email me directly with more detailed configuration information (TSM version, OS versions, network configuration etc.) then I or someone else here can help with more specific advice. What you probably want to do is give your filer a FC connection to your tape library so TSM can use NDMP to manage a "local" backup to the tape library from the filer. You will need to be careful with zoning on your FC switches. Also, only the Vixel 8100-NAS and some Brocade models of FC switch are officialy supported by NetApp for this configuration. (doesn't mean it won't work with other switches of course). AFAIK TSM 5 and later support this. An alternative is to add a couple of NIC's and provide a dedicated [crossover, or through switch with jumbo frame support] gigabit link between the filer and the TSM server. Set your MTU size to 9014 bytes for this link, and use an IP range that does not exist on your LAN to prevent route table issues. (i.e. if your LAN is say 10.x.y.z use 192.168.y.z for the dedicated link). You should be able to get over 30MB/sec for NDMP transfers over this link, more than enough to keep an AIT3, SDLT or LTO drive busy. Hi Steve; As I mentioned on the phone, I have duplicated this issue and created BUG 99740. I will monitor the progress of this bug and provide engineering with whatever they need. Also, I was unable to duplicate the overwriting of a qtree in my initial tests. I looked at ndmpcopy man pages and it says you must use the -f flag if you wanted the /etc directory copied, which I don't because they are not the same type system, but even that would not have created a empty etc directory. Offline Folders with Windows 2000

I have been experimenting with the offline folders feature of Windows 2000 Professional to make a local offline copy of a network share held on the filer. I have found that when I create a brand new share on a Windows 2000 Server and mark this share to be available offline everything works OK. When I create an identical share on our filer and make this available offline everything seems fine at first. The documents will sync. I can then take my laptop off of our network and read the offline copies of the documents. The problem comes when I reconnect. If I have only created new documents whilst at home, on reconnection these synchronize fine. If I have amended an existing document, when I return the synchronization fails with the following errors : Offline Files (\\Filer\share <file://\\Filer\share> on Filer): Unable to access 'New Microsoft Word Document.doc' on \\Filer\share <file://\\Filer\share> . An unexpected network error occurred. Offline Files (\\Filer\share <file://\\Filer\share> on Filer): Unable to merge offline changes on '\\filer\share'. An unexpected network error occurred. I have checked the permissions and both share and file level permissions are set to Everyone - Full Control. I have also upgraded to the latest version of OnTap hoping this would cure it. Any ideas ? Toasters, Got what I think is an easy one for you. How do I get my newly created qtrees to show up in DFM 2.2? FYI... The disabling of SCSI adapters, and also any non-redundant adapter, is not allowed. For the microsoft initiator, you need 6.4.1 on the filers. I'm trying to set up an iSCSI connection between a Windows 2000 Server box and my NetApp Filer. I have the document Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator HOWTO. I'm on step 4.3 - Adding a target When I try to add the Filer as a Target Portal on the Windows box it returns the error "Unsupported Version." Similar message on the Filer console. Any ideas anyone? Hi all, I have a pair of clustered 820's running Data ONTAP 6.4. One of the heads has a SCSI host adapter (Qlogic ISP 1040B) connected to a tape library that we use for backing up the filers. Occasionally the library will become confused and we will need to reset the SCSI interface in order to get it back into an operational mode. In the past we have done a takeover on the partner and then shut down / restarted the head with the SCSI card. Needless to say this is problematic. Is there any way to reset the SCSI interface on these cards without impacting the filer's operations? If not, are there other replacement cards which would allow me to do this? Anyone using disk_usage.pl script?

Hi, I downloaded the script from NOW site. I get the following error, when run on a Linux box, Illegal division by zero at ./disk_usage.pl line 232, <fpin> line 367. Anyone know how to fix this? or are there other scripts that does quota reporting, i.e. sending out emails to users when the reach a certain threshold? thanks in advance. -G

Hello L&G, Pls I need to know the difference between FAS960 and FAS960c. FAS960 support max raw capacity of 24T while FAS960c support 48T. Can one say FAS960c is for the clustered option with 2 x FAS960 Filer heads connected in a cluster configuration with the necessary cluster modules, or is the FAS960c with just one Filer head? If I have one FAS960 Filer head and disk shelves, what do I need to convert it to FAS960c, do I need to acquire another FAS960 filer head?
