FYI... The disabling of SCSI adapters, and also any non-redundant adapter, is not allowed. iSCSI on Windows

I'm trying to set up an iSCSI connection between a Windows 2000 Server box and my NetApp Filer. I have the document Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator HOWTO. I'm on step 4.3 - Adding a target When I try to add the Filer as a Target Portal on the Windows box it returns the error "Unsupported Version." Similar message on the Filer console. Any ideas anyone? Hi all, I have a pair of clustered 820's running Data ONTAP 6.4. One of the heads has a SCSI host adapter (Qlogic ISP 1040B) connected to a tape library that we use for backing up the filers. Occasionally the library will become confused and we will need to reset the SCSI interface in order to get it back into an operational mode. In the past we have done a takeover on the partner and then shut down / restarted the head with the SCSI card. Needless to say this is problematic. Is there any way to reset the SCSI interface on these cards without impacting the filer's operations? If not, are there other replacement cards which would allow me to do this? Anyone using disk_usage.pl script?

Hi, I downloaded the script from NOW site. I get the following error, when run on a Linux box, Illegal division by zero at ./disk_usage.pl line 232, <fpin> line 367. Anyone know how to fix this? or are there other scripts that does quota reporting, i.e. sending out emails to users when the reach a certain threshold? thanks in advance. -G

FAS960/FAS960c Differences

Hello L&G, Pls I need to know the difference between FAS960 and FAS960c. FAS960 support max raw capacity of 24T while FAS960c support 48T. Can one say FAS960c is for the clustered option with 2 x FAS960 Filer heads connected in a cluster configuration with the necessary cluster modules, or is the FAS960c with just one Filer head? If I have one FAS960 Filer head and disk shelves, what do I need to convert it to FAS960c, do I need to acquire another FAS960 filer head? blade servers to Filer

Hi Toasters, We are migrating many of the current servers to HP blade servers. The Server Team is considering connecting to the Filers/SAN on the back end for storage. I know this is not a problem. Some of the applications servers only need 4GB of space so leaving it on the DAS will be better. Want to best utilize the Filers since not every blade server is a good candidate for NAS if DAS will suffice. What are some criteria to use when considering connecting blade servers to the Filers? A few items to clarify: - The environment have both Filers (F880c, F820) and SAN (Sun,HDS). Filers running CIFS only. - All HP blade servers are Windows client. - Have not implemented or tested iSCSI. Probably not any time soon. - The blade servers will have mirrored drives, probably 36GB drives, with 9GB partition for OS. FDDI adapters in FAS900 filers?

Hello toasters, Has anyone used the FDDI network adapter X1105 (DEC3002) on a FAS940 or FAS960 filer? It is not approved according the the NOW site, but has anyone tried it? I have this card currently working, and supported, in F840 machines and plan to replace these with the 900 series. Considerable leverage is being applied to maintain this service. How the heck do you get the lid of a C1100?

Searched for a hardware guide for detailed stuff on the 1100, but didn't find anything other than the basic hardware install guide. I wan tto get inside this baby and take a look at it, but I can't figure out how to get the lid off. Something in the front/center seems to be holding it, but I'll be hornswoggled if I can find a screw or anything. Any tip appreciated. Thanks.

I've never used this product but it seems to provide functionality that is already present on the filer; i.e. an NDMP TAPE Server. You could buy one or more LTO2 drives (either SCSI or FC version), appropriate card(s) for one of your filers, and connect the drives up directly to one of your filers. You would then configure the backup software to perform NDMP backups in one of two ways depending on the filer. For the filer with the drives physically attached the setup can be considered local because the filer is functioning as both the NDMP DATA and TAPE servers. For the other filers without physical connectivity to the drives these function in a 3-way setup, with the filer without the drives functioning as the NDMP DATA server, and the filer with the drives functioning as the NDMP TAPE server. The choice is yours, use the functionality native to a filer (or as required by NDMP v2 actually) or buy a seperate box to provide it. -Chris P.S. I am just quoting my learned college in Mentor, who was advised by Rational that incremental backups were not the way to go. I see your point that there's little you can do with a volume of your size, but since we are talking about a database with file history, should you suffer any mishap in your backup software, would that cause a major problem in your ability to restore? We use netbackup, and I know there are times when the software misses a backup. It did last night! Hi Kumar, We are CC users on NetApps. It works great! Question 1. I would say yes, as it means you can set a no quotas style volume and not worry about your CC data swallowing up all your available resource. Question 2. As per the info above I would say no. Keep the CC data separate. There seems to be no official reason for this, but it make managing it all easier. Question 3. Locking the vobs is relatively easy. We use a Perl script that another message board regular and employ of our company devised for us. It simply runs a lock command on all vobs, runs a snapshot command on the filer volume then unlocks all the vobs. The snapshot can then be backed up at leisure. I will ask him if he thinks this is something he could publish. This kind of adds weight to the argument for having a separate volume. You are not wise to do incremental backups of CC data. There is no real way to restore an incremental, so full backups are required, and this means nightly full backups of the whole CC data. If you are chucking other data in there as well this means full nightly backups of ALL your data! CC data grows fast, so will be a big lump on its own. Hope this helps. Anyone out there using this product? (http://www.dinostor.com). If so, with which tape library and which backup software package? Since I'm setting up my NetApps from scratch and have no FCP equipment I would really like to build a GbE solution.
