command to tell you what kind of shelves you have

Is there a command that will output what type of shelves are attached to a netapp. The closes I was able to come was "environment status shelf" but that doesn't tell me whether they are FC7, FC8 or FC9 shelves. Thanks Dan

Is there any built in utility for file compression

BEA Weblogics

Are there any users out there using BEA Weblogics App servers out there that may be mounting the "projects" area from filers? BEA moves files around from the Admin Server to Managed Servers which may be on separate machines via its "deploy command. I'm vying to mount the domain dir on the Admin host and also make that a share to the W2K "build box". When our build guy goes to deploy apps his Ant scripts need to simply copy the .ear's and .war's to a "drop dir" which is also on the Admin host. From there we do the Weblogics "deploy" which does a number of things fundamentally which is moving the .ear files out of the drop dir and into the deploy app dirs. Anybody doing this? Thanks -Rob

Disk Hardware Questions

Some questions. . . 1. I have a DS14 shelf with 36gb disks, and FC8 shelf's with 18gb disks. Each shelf has a HotSpare. If a 18gb disk fails will it for sure use the 18gb hotspare or is there a chance it will pickup the 36gb hotspare? 2. I'm thinking about migrating all the data on the 36gb drives (including /etc folder) to fewer 72gb drives. What's the best way to do that? Can I add the new 72gb disks to the volume with 36gb drives, then start to remove 36gb drives over time? 3. Right now I have the FC connection going like this: Filer Head --> FC8 shelf --> FC8 shelf --> DS14 shelf. All of the important data is on the DS14 shelf. The FC8 shelfs aren't on support contracts, and don't have any important data at all. (mostly system images, software install files, etc). Is this a bad idea. How much risk am I putting my important data on the DS14 shelf. We're thinking about getting another FC HBA with two ports because right now we just have a single FC cable. Then I would plan on putting DS14 shelf on the Dual Port HBA (with redundant paths) and putting the FC8 shelfs on our current HBA by itself. 4. With the sysstats tool, what kind of numbers can I expect to max out on, on the Disk KB/s? Thanks, Steve Evans SDSU Foundation

It seems that it happens whenever one applies "du" to a directory tree in which there are "visible" .snapshot directory entries (i.e. one or more NFS mount points). Presumably it's getting upset by the duplicate inode numbers appearing in snapshots. Lots of Unix utilities (especially GNUish ones) have had similar problems in the past. I am getting this error when I try to do a "du -sk *" some netapp directories mounted on my solaris 2.9 oracle database server. If I am in the directory that contains the files it works fine. Vol copy'ing a ZCS volume to a BCS one

What happens when one does a "vol copy" from a volume that has zoned checksums active to one that is made out of BCS (520-byte sector) disks? Do the blocks that were reserved for zone checksums on the source volume become free when the target volume is put online? Or does the latter remain a zoned checksum volume even though it is made up of BCS discs? The documentation doesn't seem to be very clear on this point, and I can't do the experiment (yet) ... Edward, The drives in your system are X225B. They are ZCS 36GB disks. You can use the X224A, X225A, X225B or X225C which are all ZCS 36GB disks for the StorageShelf FC9. I've got an old F720 filer that needs two spare 36GB disks in a hurry - got two RAID sets, each with 1 failed disk, which makes me feel kinda vulnerable. I'm not familiar with the types of disks that are compatible. This could be an RSH issue. In 5.X FilerView used RSH to talk to the filer. Try checking the value of rsh.enable and whether you can rsh to the filer (modulo other security settings). connection refused error when trying to access filerview

I know this used to work a while back but it no longer does. I don't use it but another admin here would like to be able to use it to make changes. It works fine on the three other netapps we have here. This one is running an older version of OS though, it's at NetApp Release 5.3.5R2. Under options httpd.admin.enable is set to on. I can get in and bring up the java window, i don't get the error message until I try to access something that requres the root password. When I provide it I get the following error: Error communicating with host 10.209.68.211 msg=Connection refused nothing shows up in the message log for errors. Is there a way to turn on logging for this to try and get more info about what's happening? I've also tried disabling it and enabling it and that doesn't seem to fix the problem. I know the password is correct because I can telnet into the console just fine. Could it be looking for a different password other than the root password? I also ran the password command and changed the root users password and then tried to access filerview with the new password and that didn't work either. Any help would be really appreciated Thanks Dan

Yes. Do you really need more inodes than 1 per 4 K? That would mean a LOT of really small files. 4 K is the minimum size of any file in WAFL (the write anywhere file layout) that Data OnTap uses. We had a nightmare with NDMP when 6.4.1 was installed on our FAS960 cluster. Netbackup 4.5 NDMP refused to work. NetApp rolled back the upgrade to 6.3.1 and everything worked great. From what I can tell, the D* versions have addressed this Netbackup/NDMP issue. To upgrade or not upgrade? My advice is; Don't do it unless 6.4.1D* gives you functionality that is critical to your production operation. If 6.4.1D* is critical, my advice is to upgrade and test the backups. But make sure you have a clear understanding of the downgrade procedure if you need to do it. Mirroring using raidsize=2

Our company (in its wisdom) has decided that all "critcal" data must be on mirrored filesystems, not on raid. On filers, if you set the raidsize to 2, you effectively get a mirrored volume. Does anyone do this? Does it cause a performance problem?
