Veritas BackupExec 9

I've been able to backup my filer using BackupExec 8.5, but since upgrading to BackupExec 9 I get an error that BackupExec is unable to attach to one of the drives. All the permissions are correct (the BackupExec service account is in the Backup Operators group, and the Admin group while troubleshooting), and I'm using user-defined shares in BackupExec. Has anyone else been through this? Veritas support is drawing blanks on this. Steve Evans SDSU Foundation

Here is a useful script that can get data for mrtg without going negative when the numbers get really high. I am not an mrtg guru, this is just one way to fix the problem. Are there a lot of people using the filer-mrtg "unsupported" package from Netapp. I found a few things buggy in it, i.e. It freaks when getting data on a 6.4.1 firmware level, and it freaks when the counters get too high, causing negative numbers and bad graphs. Fas 250's

Windows 2003 Storage Server may be a viable alternative. Plenty of vendors have or will be releasing NAS devices using this OS (Dell and HP come to mind). Not sure about the NFS support as I haven't looked that far into it yet. If services for Unix/Linux aren't available, then you can always turn to a couple of SAMBA servers. Snapshotting? I know there is Volume Shadow Copy services (VSS) which will do a cut-down version of snapshot. Take a look at the whitepapers from Microsoft and make up your own mind. I believe is no substitute for Netapp at the enterprise level. As for your DR. Snapmirror is your best bet and you will need to stick with Netapp obviously. However, some well orchestrated rsync script/crontab'ing could give you basic production data replication. It depends on how critical your CEO considers the data to be and how much time you have to spend setting it all up. Snapmirror comes with the excellence of Netapp support. Rsync'ing comes with the level of support you are capable of providing. Windows Storage server is unproven but it is built on stable and fundamental NAS principles. I doubt very much that the simulator could be reconfigured to do what you are suggesting. Even if you could, I am sure there would be some hefty licensing issues to deal with. Hi Paul, Welcome to the fellowship of the File ;-) VFM which stands for Virtual File Manager is a storage virtualization tool aimed at NetApp Filers and Windows servers (and a little bit to Unix users). It's relies on Microsoft DFS (distributed file system) which presents a logical view of the data to users, no matter where it's physically located. VFM (also known as StorageX) enhances greatly DFS by adding functionality such as automated data migration, consolidation, life cycle management and disaster recovery policies. In your case, VFM would allow you to automatically manage the shares on the NearStore, and in case of a failure of the FAS960, break the SnapMirror and update the DFS tree so that Windows users accessing data through DFS would be transparently redirected to the R150. With such a solution, no need to play with DNS, WINS, etc. I would suggest that you contact your NetApp representative or if you have NOW website access, download VFM 4.0 documentation to make your opinion on it. Actually, pktt does continue tracing into the memory buffer, but it stops writing to a trace file once the -s limit is hit. And there are limits on the size of the internal (-b) buffers available for pktt (around 64MB total). At the moment pktt does not have a way to automatically keep a rotating log of trace files. However, this can be done with a perl script, for example. The basic idea would be to trace to files using the -d option, then periodically stop tracing, delete the oldest trace file, rename the trace files as needed to keep the desired amount of data in the rotating log, then start tracing again. Our environment: OnTap 6.4.2 for F960 (primary filer) w/ R150 (nearStore) which contains snap mirrors of the F960 data volumes... all in a Windows 2000 AD domain. Filers are used by CIFS clients only (9x, NT4, W2k, XP). If the F960 would "die", we would want to break the snap mirror to the R150 and make this data read/write. Additionally, we thought we could give the R150 a Netbios alias name equal to the F960. The version would help, and also, you are not finding a default site, so it will go alphabetically to the next site. You seem to be dropping to NT4 mode by looking for those BDC/PDC's. Anyone else having problems installing the Ontap 6.4.2 upgrade. We have a 960 filer on 6.4.1p1 and the Zip file bombs out about 1/4 of the way during the unzip process. Error Message: Can't create the output file N:\etc\boot\x86\firmware\xfiler\firmware.img Is this a known issue? Any suggestions? Thanks! Paul M. Hi guys, Need help here. Having problem intergrating filer with active directory. When I try to run ndmpcopy from one of my filers' (840s) console prompt, it locks up and does not release the console until after it is done not allowing me to type anything else in. I realize that I can run ndmpcopy from any other hosts I'm just wondering if this is the correct behavior. Wrapping pktt trace?

To catch an application problem, I want to leave pktt trace running on a filer...overnight. If I do, it'll fill it up. I know you can tell it to bound the amount of space it uses, but I think it stops tracing once it hits that. Is there any way to get it to keep tracing within a bounded amount of disk space, just overwriting old trace files? That way I would have the last few hours of trace. Attaching 4700 to an FAS940

I'm coming in on Sunday to cable two Sun L280 (4700?) DLT 7000 7 tape stackers to my FAS940. Support told me that the system will probe the SCSI controller and yield the correct device types. Here's my sysconfig -v output: slot 8: SCSI Host Adapter 8a (Adaptec AIC7899A) HW Version 0.0 Ultra160 SCSI, Low Voltage Differential slot 8: SCSI Host Adapter 8b (Adaptec AIC7899A) HW Version 0.0 Ultra160 SCSI, Low Voltage Differential Anything I should know to get these bad boys to work? Hi Duncan, I think you'll not see difference between native dumps and NDMP. Indeed, NDMP can ben seen as some kind of "remote control", so using NDMP to make backup with a Filer actually implies using dump. So NDMP is, for its most part, a mean to control dump operation, plus, and that's the added value, getting a catalog of the files backed up to easily recover them. What are people monitoring on their NetApps with mrtg? Just curios cause I only use MRTG to graph the network traffic. I did think about using it for CPU/disk space but I currently use Nagios for that. I am sure others on this list will have good uses for MRTG on their NetApps....anyone care to share? Boring I know, but I'd be interested to learn what kind of backup performance people are getting for Windows/CIFS shares. I'm particularly thinking of home and shared directories with millions of small files - the usual junk that accumulates on these types of shares with hundreds of users. I've seen amazing performance from dumps of Oracle datafiles, in the order of 90MB/s to three fibre-attached LTO-1s from an F840, but I know many small files will reduce thruput significantly. The question is how much and what would you do differently ? I'd be grateful for any numbers people could share. We'll probably use NDMP but I guess simple dumps would give a similar performance. Alternatives?

Hi, We currently have a customer with an F760 and 6 shelves of 36's, and an F720 with 6 shelves of 18's. We've had problems with both that of course should never have happened. About the only thing we came up with is another F760 with 6 shelves of 72's, vol copy to it, and then having the customer FTP to both to keep things in sync. This solution is a bit pricey for the customer. (About $47K) Has anyone looked at any of the IDE based solutions to replace a F760 class filer? We do about 4500 to 5K NFSops. C4.log?

Hello Toasters, In troubleshooting latency issues between our main site and a remote location, we have noticed a lot of traffic going to our filer and erroring out. Each machine in the remote location is trying to get to a file called \%username%\c4.log on a filer in our main site, but is unable to find it. Between all 20 users in this site, these events are occurring every minute or two. This traffic is coming from machines running Windows XP and 2000, some of the machines are in our active directory domain, some are in our NT 4.0 domain.
