The disks in the DC-12 shelf are located like this(front left to right). 15 14 13 12 11 10 09 08 03 02 01 00 If the disk is already failed, you don't need to do it again. Check the message section of your autosupport-mail to find out which disk is failed. Remember to run "disk swap" before changing disks. Hi I have a fail disk in a SDS12 shelf but unfortunately the LED has gone to amber color and I wonder how disks are numbered into the shelf ? I think it is from 0 to 11 from left to right when looking in front of the shelf , am I right ? the disk has been declared no good for I/O by the filer and I have the replacing part and I have another question the doc tell us to declare the disk failed by the disk fail <disk_name> command , ok but ... what is the name of the disk ? Hi Paul, you don't have to worry about any snapshot settings before deleting a qtree. The blocks in your qtrees are already marked as belonging to serveral snapshots if the data already exists for some time (what I assume). Once this has happened you can't do anything about it. If you delete your qtrees, the data will move to the snapshot area. The remaining qtrees are not affected. You are not able to differentiate between snapshots of different qtrees as a snapshot is always taken of a whole volume. Hi, Just after any information of what is the best way to delete a qtree. My problem is this - I have a volume about 1TB which has 5 qtrees, I want to delete 2 qtrees but keep the snapshots of the 3 remaining. If I turned snapshot off for the volume before running the delete, then deleted the files would this work ? Regards Paul

Procmail not delivering mail to users /var/spool/mail files on NFS mounted directory on (Netapp F825)

I have a Linux server which has a NFS mounted home directory on which mail is delivered to a /var/spool/mail directory. The NFS server is a Netappp F825. I have posted this to the procmai mailing list also. Cross posting to see if any netapp administrators have fought similar mail issues with NFS mounted spool directories; and could help resolve these issues. procmail is the LDA. (version 3.22) Sendmail (8.12.10) No /etc/procmail/rc Sendmail and Procmail are being run in a chroot environment. When mail is received from the network, it is deposited into /var/spool/mqueue and owned by root:<userid> but stays there until a manual sendmail -q is done to push the mail, into the userid mail spool. Is there away I can get procmail, to accept the root:<userid> permissions and process the mail into the /var/spool/mail/<userid> mailboxes? sendmail and procmail are setuid. The user and root are both trusted users in the sendmail.cf, and the userid is the default userid in the sendmail.cf (sendmail is running in a chrooted environment). If mail is send to a user in the chroot environment via sendmail the mail is delivered to the spool with no problems. Be sure you have an OS on the drives. Booting from floppies and running setup does some basic configuration but does not install a full version of the OS. I ran into something similar. During the boot sequence I typed in a ctrl + c to get to the OK prompt. Once at the OK prompt type "boot floppy" Similar to SUN systems. When your are at the OK prompt you can set some enviroment variables also. setenv floppy-boot? true Check the docs. Not sure what all the variables are. Veritas BackupExec 9

I've been able to backup my filer using BackupExec 8.5, but since upgrading to BackupExec 9 I get an error that BackupExec is unable to attach to one of the drives. All the permissions are correct (the BackupExec service account is in the Backup Operators group, and the Admin group while troubleshooting), and I'm using user-defined shares in BackupExec. Here is a useful script that can get data for mrtg without going negative when the numbers get really high. I am not an mrtg guru, this is just one way to fix the problem. Are there a lot of people using the filer-mrtg "unsupported" package from Netapp. I found a few things buggy in it, i.e. It freaks when getting data on a 6.4.1 firmware level, and it freaks when the counters get too high, causing negative numbers and bad graphs. Windows 2003 Storage Server may be a viable alternative. Plenty of vendors have or will be releasing NAS devices using this OS (Dell and HP come to mind). Not sure about the NFS support as I haven't looked that far into it yet. If services for Unix/Linux aren't available, then you can always turn to a couple of SAMBA servers. Snapshotting? I know there is Volume Shadow Copy services (VSS) which will do a cut-down version of snapshot. Take a look at the whitepapers from Microsoft and make up your own mind. I believe is no substitute for Netapp at the enterprise level. As for your DR. Snapmirror is your best bet and you will need to stick with Netapp obviously. However, some well orchestrated rsync script/crontab'ing could give you basic production data replication. It depends on how critical your CEO considers the data to be and how much time you have to spend setting it all up. Snapmirror comes with the excellence of Netapp support. Rsync'ing comes with the level of support you are capable of providing. Windows Storage server is unproven but it is built on stable and fundamental NAS principles. I doubt very much that the simulator could be reconfigured to do what you are suggesting. Even if you could, I am sure there would be some hefty licensing issues to deal with. Hi Paul, Welcome to the fellowship of the File ;-) VFM which stands for Virtual File Manager is a storage virtualization tool aimed at NetApp Filers and Windows servers (and a little bit to Unix users). It's relies on Microsoft DFS (distributed file system) which presents a logical view of the data to users, no matter where it's physically located. VFM (also known as StorageX) enhances greatly DFS by adding functionality such as automated data migration, consolidation, life cycle management and disaster recovery policies. In your case, VFM would allow you to automatically manage the shares on the NearStore, and in case of a failure of the FAS960, break the SnapMirror and update the DFS tree so that Windows users accessing data through DFS would be transparently redirected to the R150. With such a solution, no need to play with DNS, WINS, etc. I would suggest that you contact your NetApp representative or if you have NOW website access, download VFM 4.0 documentation to make your opinion on it. We probably would have WINS and DNS changes to make as well and we would need to recreate the shared folders and quota settings on the R150. We do snap mirror the vol0 of the F960 to a volume on the R150. And, of course, how would you revert back to the F960 upon it's "rebirth". Actually, pktt does continue tracing into the memory buffer, but it stops writing to a trace file once the -s limit is hit. And there are limits on the size of the internal (-b) buffers available for pktt (around 64MB total). At the moment pktt does not have a way to automatically keep a rotating log of trace files. However, this can be done with a perl script, for example. The basic idea would be to trace to files using the -d option, then periodically stop tracing, delete the oldest trace file, rename the trace files as needed to keep the desired amount of data in the rotating log, then start tracing again.
