TCP connection limit on OT anymore?

From what I hear there was a hard limit of 25 connections to a filer when using TCP. The only way to get around that at the time was use UDP. From everything I've read, people I've talked to, and NetApp's own assertion this limit is long gone. The only limit now is a practical one of cpu and memory. Does anyone have any evidence to the contrary? Thanks. ~JK

Figured I'd pass this along incase someone doesn't know. Sun doesn't themselves supply an iSCSI initiator for Solaris. There is an iSCSI initiator in "Sun Linux" but thats just open source Linux code, not Sun stuff. Cisco however does seem to have an iSCSI initiator for Solaris (and HP-UX, AIX, etc). Check it out here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/ps4159/ps2160/products_qanda_item091… To get it you need a Cisco login which I don't have, and it's already been EOL'ed. Think $500 per TOE and a $200 Linksys gigE switch, versus $1500+ per HBA and a $20,000 Brocade. Wow. this is cool. But do the cards cost as much as getting HBA's for a SAN environment. In my situation, we are trying to judge the cost differences between using an existing SAN and testing cheaper iSCSI solutions (or what would appear cheaper). I've been testing iSCSI on windows systems and the performance/reliability seems to be good. I was wondering if anyone knows why Solaris, or any of the commercial unix vendors haven't jumped on board with this. I noticed a cisco initiator for Solaris, but I wonder if it even works with the netapp. If you call Sun, they are kinda clueless on iSCSI and don't really elaborate much in my experience. Direct connect Xover performance

I've just completed a direct connect private network connection between a Sun Fire V880 and my Filer FAS 940 for running Oracle over. I used the Sun Fire's 10/100 Copper and told the Filer to use FD/100. I've still got to verify the Sun "negotiated" appropriated with the Filer's NIC. What is your favorite rip snortin performance test writing to a Filer mount? I ran a ufsudmp of /usr and here are the numbers I was getting in sysstat. Comparable to what any of you have gotten best case? This problem is a bug in Ontap 6.4 and it is solved with Ontap 6.4.2P4. We also have the problem by upgrading from 6.3.1 to 6.4.2. Phase 1 of dump was running for 3 hours instead of 30min (you can check that in te etc/logs/backup* files. See also: Burts fixed in 6.4.2P4 since 6.4.2P3: 95633 |Assert due to error from bind call in svc_create_port 96894 |Phase I of NDMP based backups is slow. 100360 |After a boot without /etc/rc cifs start and terminate fail 102089 |Should we spend so long to try to spin up a drive at boot? 103762 |FTP service passive mode leaks sockets in LISTEN state. 104758 |Cannot enable space reservations on non-reserved LUN even when there is enough space. 104942 |Filer's cpu hung while trying to find treeID in response to very large number of tconx requests. Manually failing disks

Is there an issue with manually failing disks on say an unused Volume for testing purposes? IE: I want to test my spare disks and also observe volume rebuild time. If I manually fail a disk I remember that NetApp disks store their failure data. Do I risk maxing out an internal "number of failures" register on the disks if I manually fail a disk several times? CIFS/NFS file sharing in a non NIS environment

Hi, I have a filer with CIFS and NFS licenses. I want to share UNIX style qtrees on PC and UNIX. Currently, if a qtree has UNIX style permissions it will not allow the PC user to open a share. If the qtree has NTFS permissions it will not allow UNIX users to access the share. I have a set-up in my own office where we have NIS, and this handles the name resolution. However, the office I am in currently does not have NIS. I have tried createing a password and group file on the filer, identical to the password files used on the UNIX systems, however this has no effect. Any ideas? Can a filer do this?

Hi Does anyone know if it is possible to see what files are being access on the filer from the filers side ?? eg.. run command on the filer for 'n' minutes and it spits out all the files that were touched for that 1 minute period and lists what qtrees/volumes they are in?? On the NOW site there is a file called netapp-top.pl that lists top nfs clients.. this i guess would be the next step up from that and it would list the nfs client and a list of files it accessed ?? is this doable?? is there any scripts ?? anything like solaris lsof for the filer?? -- Greg Wilson System Administrator gwilson(a)connect.com.au

Data corruption and TCP checksums

We've just tracked down an evil problem where corrupt data is being returned on NFS reads from a NetApp. This turned out to be because of dodgy network cables introducing packet corruption - word-aligned values of 0x0000 and 0xFFFF apparently produce the same TCP checksum result, so any corruption which interchanges those values get through to the application. Our application has a file which is a bitmap, and contains a lot of this kind of data - so it's just the sort of file you'd expect this problem to occur on. Obviously now that we know about this there's stuff to do - monitor CRC errors more carefully, perhaps change the structure of our data. But I was wondering whether anyone else has experienced similar problems and come up with any imaginative solutions to it? Guys, I have seen similar slow NDMP performace when performing phase II imports of tape images. FAS960 cluster, Ontap 6.4.1D18, Veritas Netackup 4.5FP3. After about 2 months of investigation through our backup vendor, Veritas has stated that it is officially a "known issue", and that's it. Their suggested solution was to try a direct-attach SCSI drive on the master server and then do the imports. No guarantees on it being faster, but the logic is sound. We decide to just slowly work through the 18 tapes using the current configuration. If anyone finds a way to get this to work faster via NDMP, please notify Veritas. You could try DAR I just wanted to update on the DAR feature:which netback up supports. File-level DAR is supported; directory-level DAR is not supported. DAR can be used when restoring files, but not when restoring directories. Backups must have been performed with the NetBackup catalog set to binary mode.For backups made with the catalog set to ASCII mode, restores cannot use DAR, because ASCII mode did not store the required DAR offset information on each backup. Note that all backups made prior to NetBackup 4.5 used ASCII catalog mode.restoring files. Re: ndmp phase 1 very slow

I was wondering the exact same thing. I am using a FAS940c with Netbackup 4.5 MP3. Even if you use ndmpcopy (which by the way is extremely cool for migrating files from filer to filer) it's slow as dirt on phase I. And you are right, there is little to no cpu usageage and disk i/o is low. Once it gets into the later phases it starts ripping like crazy. I am not sure if this is "working as designed" but I also noticed the restore time is insane. I was dumping 1.4M files as a test, it took 3hrs 13m to complete my backup (131 GB). Now, the really scarry part is, have you tried a restore. To restore 1 file, took me about the same time, I guess it reads the entire dump beginning to end despite the selected files. Hi, I have no solution for you, but as a first step in troubleshooting the cifs access, I would recommend to activate the option cifs.trace_login on the filer. Subsequently monitoring the messages on the filer console while the user tries to login usually gives you a hint why the request is denied. You can also use the "wcc" command on the filer to check the user mapping. F740/760 Power Supply Question

Our hosting provider has different rates for power depending on how backup power supplies are used, can anyone shed some light on how Netapp power supplies work? Rob, I remember testing the process of failing disks on our test filer - an F87. When we did this, the filer wrote something somewhere (I can't remember offhand) and we had to trade in the disk. We called NetApp when we tried to re-use the disk and the system would not accept it. NetApp told us the only way for us to continue was to actually replace the disk. Is there a way to exclude a directory (full qtree in this case) from a dump? I've experimented with the -X option, but that appears to only match the filename, not the full path to the file. -- -billy- warnold(a)vipnet.org

F740 Poor Network Performance.

Dear All, I have a F740 running Ontap 6.1.1R2 with 1 Gigabit and 2 100Mbps ethernet ports. I am seeing very poor performance on these hosts from Sun and Linux clients, running Solaris 8 and Rh 7.3(2.4.20-ac2) I am trying to dd a 200M file and i would like to check if the bottleneck caused is because of poor disk or network performance. Is there an easy way to check disk performance while i dd the file to a particular volume(the netapp has 3 volumes and all 3 have equally bad results) I dont think that the Solaris and Linux clients are configured wrong, i have an F810 that for now seems to be performing pretty close to my expectations. nfs has tcp enabled on both filers. Anything unsual to look out for doing a snoop etc. Can anyone also confirm whether default mount on Solaris clients is tcp or udp ? Thorsten, Be careful with the way you word things. Saying "the data will move to the snapshot area" implies that data is actively copied out like in other vendors snapshot implementations (Compaq/HP Virtual Replicator, EMC SnapView, etc) which would generate a negative performance impact and the potential for snapshot failure, which are two issues that are suffered by the other vendor products. The ability to do "passive" snapshots as a side-effect of the no-update-in-place policy of WAFL is a major differentiator for Network Appliance. Rather, say "the data is no longer marked as part of the active filesystem". It's still protected by the snapshot block map of course, until all the relevant snapshots are deleted.
