I was wondering the exact same thing. I am using a FAS940c with Netbackup 4.5 MP3. Even if you use ndmpcopy (which by the way is extremely cool for migrating files from filer to filer) it's slow as dirt on phase I. And you are right, there is little to no cpu usageage and disk i/o is low. Once it gets into the later phases it starts ripping like crazy. I am not sure if this is "working as designed" but I also noticed the restore time is insane. I was dumping 1.4M files as a test, it took 3hrs 13m to complete my backup (131 GB). Now, the really scarry part is, have you tried a restore. To restore 1 file, took me about the same time, I guess it reads the entire dump beginning to end despite the selected files. Hi, I have no solution for you, but as a first step in troubleshooting the cifs access, I would recommend to activate the option cifs.trace_login on the filer. Subsequently monitoring the messages on the filer console while the user tries to login usually gives you a hint why the request is denied. You can also use the "wcc" command on the filer to check the user mapping. F740/760 Power Supply Question

Our hosting provider has different rates for power depending on how backup power supplies are used, can anyone shed some light on how Netapp power supplies work? Rob, I remember testing the process of failing disks on our test filer - an F87. When we did this, the filer wrote something somewhere (I can't remember offhand) and we had to trade in the disk. We called NetApp when we tried to re-use the disk and the system would not accept it. NetApp told us the only way for us to continue was to actually replace the disk. F740 Poor Network Performance.

Dear All, I have a F740 running Ontap 6.1.1R2 with 1 Gigabit and 2 100Mbps ethernet ports. I am seeing very poor performance on these hosts from Sun and Linux clients, running Solaris 8 and Rh 7.3(2.4.20-ac2) I am trying to dd a 200M file and i would like to check if the bottleneck caused is because of poor disk or network performance. Is there an easy way to check disk performance while i dd the file to a particular volume(the netapp has 3 volumes and all 3 have equally bad results) I dont think that the Solaris and Linux clients are configured wrong, i have an F810 that for now seems to be performing pretty close to my expectations. nfs has tcp enabled on both filers. Anything unsual to look out for doing a snoop etc. Can anyone also confirm whether default mount on Solaris clients is tcp or udp ? Thorsten, Be careful with the way you word things. Saying "the data will move to the snapshot area" implies that data is actively copied out like in other vendors snapshot implementations (Compaq/HP Virtual Replicator, EMC SnapView, etc) which would generate a negative performance impact and the potential for snapshot failure, which are two issues that are suffered by the other vendor products. The ability to do "passive" snapshots as a side-effect of the no-update-in-place policy of WAFL is a major differentiator for Network Appliance. Rather, say "the data is no longer marked as part of the active filesystem". It's still protected by the snapshot block map of course, until all the relevant snapshots are deleted. The disks in the DC-12 shelf are located like this(front left to right). 15 14 13 12 11 10 09 08 03 02 01 00 If the disk is already failed, you don't need to do it again. Check the message section of your autosupport-mail to find out which disk is failed. Remember to run "disk swap" before changing disks. Hi I have a fail disk in a SDS12 shelf but unfortunately the LED has gone to amber color and I wonder how disks are numbered into the shelf ? I think it is from 0 to 11 from left to right when looking in front of the shelf , am I right ? the disk has been declared no good for I/O by the filer and I have the replacing part and I have another question the doc tell us to declare the disk failed by the disk fail <disk_name> command , ok but ... what is the name of the disk ? Hi Paul, you don't have to worry about any snapshot settings before deleting a qtree. The blocks in your qtrees are already marked as belonging to serveral snapshots if the data already exists for some time (what I assume). Once this has happened you can't do anything about it. If you delete your qtrees, the data will move to the snapshot area. The remaining qtrees are not affected. You are not able to differentiate between snapshots of different qtrees as a snapshot is always taken of a whole volume. Hi, Just after any information of what is the best way to delete a qtree. My problem is this - I have a volume about 1TB which has 5 qtrees, I want to delete 2 qtrees but keep the snapshots of the 3 remaining. Procmail not delivering mail to users /var/spool/mail files on NFS mounted directory on (Netapp F825)

I have a Linux server which has a NFS mounted home directory on which mail is delivered to a /var/spool/mail directory. The NFS server is a Netappp F825. I have posted this to the procmai mailing list also. Cross posting to see if any netapp administrators have fought similar mail issues with NFS mounted spool directories; and could help resolve these issues. procmail is the LDA. (version 3.22) Sendmail (8.12.10) No /etc/procmail/rc Sendmail and Procmail are being run in a chroot environment. When mail is received from the network, it is deposited into /var/spool/mqueue and owned by root:<userid> but stays there until a manual sendmail -q is done to push the mail, into the userid mail spool. Is there away I can get procmail, to accept the root:<userid> permissions and process the mail into the /var/spool/mail/<userid> mailboxes? sendmail and procmail are setuid. The user and root are both trusted users in the sendmail.cf, and the userid is the default userid in the sendmail.cf (sendmail is running in a chrooted environment). If mail is send to a user in the chroot environment via sendmail the mail is delivered to the spool with no problems. Be sure you have an OS on the drives. Booting from floppies and running setup does some basic configuration but does not install a full version of the OS. Middle East NetApp Dealers?

Can anybody recommend a reputable North American-based NetApp dealer that has the ability to sell (or can figure out a way to sell) into Middle Eastern countries such as Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia? -- we can't seem to get an answer from Network Appliance or their distributors. Try: Power off the filer. Power on the filer. enter "CTRL C" during the initilzation to get to the boot menu. I ran into something similar. During the boot sequence I typed in a ctrl + c to get to the OK prompt. Once at the OK prompt type "boot floppy" Similar to SUN systems. When your are at the OK prompt you can set some enviroment variables also. setenv floppy-boot? true Check the docs. Not sure what all the variables are.
