loopback performance

Hi all, i want to migrate data on a Giga Filer from its old disks to newer bigger one what can i use to get the faster operation knowing that : - volcopy won't be able to go faster than 36G/hr (as if ths volcopy was running over a 100TP link) I would like to know if any of you know if NDMPCopy or SnapMirror can go beyond this 36G limit in a loopback mode (migration from-to the same Filer). Hi Dan, Nope, regular power points work just fine (240V/10A, 110V/20A etc). The F760 Hardware Guide (downloadable from NOW) has the power consumption for the filer head, and the hardware guide for your shelves (FC7, FC8, DS14 or whatever) has the consumption for the shelves. I always recommend connecting one of each PSU for each component to a different circuit, preferably through a UPS. I am being asked some questions about our F760s by a hosting provider and I was unsure what the answers. Do they need 30amp or 50amp circuits and what is the phase for these circuits. adding a gigabit interface to a F85

We have a F85 that we'd like to add a gigabit (copper or fiber) interface to: - is there a copper interface available for the F85? (I only see fiber ones) - what version of OnTAP is necessary to enable jumbo-frames - what is the max throughput in MBps we can expect the F85 to be able to push given 1 volume with 5 drives and a single large file - any known hints/problems with using such a setup with FreeBSD clients with Intel Pro/1000 copper interfaces (em)? - any recommendations on a reasonable switch which has at least one fiber interface or gbic port and one copper GigE interface? Just a poll to see who attempts to disconnect/unmount every possible client (server) before attempting a DataONTAP upgrade and who types download; reboot. Does anyone leave their Oracle databases mounted via NFS over UDP up the whole time?

TCP connection limit on OT anymore?

From what I hear there was a hard limit of 25 connections to a filer when using TCP. The only way to get around that at the time was use UDP. From everything I've read, people I've talked to, and NetApp's own assertion this limit is long gone. The only limit now is a practical one of cpu and memory. Does anyone have any evidence to the contrary? Thanks. ~JK

Figured I'd pass this along incase someone doesn't know. Sun doesn't themselves supply an iSCSI initiator for Solaris. There is an iSCSI initiator in "Sun Linux" but thats just open source Linux code, not Sun stuff. Cisco however does seem to have an iSCSI initiator for Solaris (and HP-UX, AIX, etc). Check it out here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/ps4159/ps2160/products_qanda_item091… To get it you need a Cisco login which I don't have, and it's already been EOL'ed. Wow. this is cool. But do the cards cost as much as getting HBA's for a SAN environment. In my situation, we are trying to judge the cost differences between using an existing SAN and testing cheaper iSCSI solutions (or what would appear cheaper). Solaris iSCSI initiator

I've been testing iSCSI on windows systems and the performance/reliability seems to be good. I was wondering if anyone knows why Solaris, or any of the commercial unix vendors haven't jumped on board with this. I noticed a cisco initiator for Solaris, but I wonder if it even works with the netapp. If you call Sun, they are kinda clueless on iSCSI and don't really elaborate much in my experience. Direct connect Xover performance

I've just completed a direct connect private network connection between a Sun Fire V880 and my Filer FAS 940 for running Oracle over. I used the Sun Fire's 10/100 Copper and told the Filer to use FD/100. I've still got to verify the Sun "negotiated" appropriated with the Filer's NIC. What is your favorite rip snortin performance test writing to a Filer mount? I ran a ufsudmp of /usr and here are the numbers I was getting in sysstat. Comparable to what any of you have gotten best case? This problem is a bug in Ontap 6.4 and it is solved with Ontap 6.4.2P4. We also have the problem by upgrading from 6.3.1 to 6.4.2. Phase 1 of dump was running for 3 hours instead of 30min (you can check that in te etc/logs/backup* files. Manually failing disks

Is there an issue with manually failing disks on say an unused Volume for testing purposes? IE: I want to test my spare disks and also observe volume rebuild time. If I manually fail a disk I remember that NetApp disks store their failure data. Do I risk maxing out an internal "number of failures" register on the disks if I manually fail a disk several times? CIFS/NFS file sharing in a non NIS environment

Hi, I have a filer with CIFS and NFS licenses. I want to share UNIX style qtrees on PC and UNIX. Currently, if a qtree has UNIX style permissions it will not allow the PC user to open a share. If the qtree has NTFS permissions it will not allow UNIX users to access the share. I have a set-up in my own office where we have NIS, and this handles the name resolution. However, the office I am in currently does not have NIS. I have tried createing a password and group file on the filer, identical to the password files used on the UNIX systems, however this has no effect. Any ideas? Can a filer do this?

Hi Does anyone know if it is possible to see what files are being access on the filer from the filers side ?? eg.. run command on the filer for 'n' minutes and it spits out all the files that were touched for that 1 minute period and lists what qtrees/volumes they are in?? On the NOW site there is a file called netapp-top.pl that lists top nfs clients.. this i guess would be the next step up from that and it would list the nfs client and a list of files it accessed ?? is this doable?? is there any scripts ?? anything like solaris lsof for the filer?? -- Greg Wilson System Administrator gwilson(a)connect.com.au

Data corruption and TCP checksums

We've just tracked down an evil problem where corrupt data is being returned on NFS reads from a NetApp. This turned out to be because of dodgy network cables introducing packet corruption - word-aligned values of 0x0000 and 0xFFFF apparently produce the same TCP checksum result, so any corruption which interchanges those values get through to the application. Our application has a file which is a bitmap, and contains a lot of this kind of data - so it's just the sort of file you'd expect this problem to occur on. Obviously now that we know about this there's stuff to do - monitor CRC errors more carefully, perhaps change the structure of our data. But I was wondering whether anyone else has experienced similar problems and come up with any imaginative solutions to it? After about 2 months of investigation through our backup vendor, Veritas has stated that it is officially a "known issue", and that's it. Their suggested solution was to try a direct-attach SCSI drive on the master server and then do the imports. No guarantees on it being faster, but the logic is sound. You could try DAR I just wanted to update on the DAR feature:which netback up supports. File-level DAR is supported; directory-level DAR is not supported. DAR can be used when restoring files, but not when restoring directories. Backups must have been performed with the NetBackup catalog set to binary mode.For backups made with the catalog set to ASCII mode, restores cannot use DAR, because ASCII mode did not store the required DAR offset information on each backup. Note that all backups made prior to NetBackup 4.5 used ASCII catalog mode.restoring files.
