Unbreaking a disk

Trying to get a few netapps ready for putting them up for sale, and one of them I had lost the password. I booted from floppy, but used a wrong version of OnTap (or something else went horribly wrong, not sure which), and the system complains about "no data or parity disks" and lists every drive as broken. I somehow doubt all 28 drives suddenly broke, so I'm wondering how I flag a drive as not broken again, so I can zero out the array and start over. (I remember knowing this at one point, on some hidden maintenance menu.) Any tips would be appreciated. And note to self: disable "return receipts" before posting to the mailing list. Sorry if I caused any inconvenience to folks, but I promise you, I paid for it. There sure are a lot of you out there :-). (I would have thought the mailing list software would have stripped return receipt requests, but oh well.) Thanks folks.

Hi all, I am running Netapp F230 with Netapp Release 5.2.1, The Filer was a member of a domain, but the users were migrated to another domain, so I ran cifs setup & tried to join it to a new domain, it is throwing up an error, that a computer account has to be created for it to join the domain. Since creating a Computer account is going to take a long time (Dont ask me why..... there are so many issues to that. ). I tried to join it back to the old domain, to my bad luck the security information has been changed, & a new computer account cannot be created in that domain as it is being phased out. So I am stuck now. So I have made it as a member of a workgroup, but users are not able to access the filer, How do you create local users on the filer so that users can logon with that credentials. Or can somebody suggest me a better way of accessing the filer. Regards Manjunath HN

How to sell a netapp

I know this isn't a for-sale list, and I'm not trying to use it for this. But I would like to know what people think is the best way to sell a NetApp. I have three 1T-ish F740's that I am selling, and have tried putting them on eBay, as well as putting the shelves/heads separately on eBay, and the bids were just ridiculously low, so I ended up pulling the auctions. At one time I remember hearing about an ISP equipment mailing list. Is there any preferred list like this, or other common place for selling Network Appliance hardware? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, To join a NT4 domain you have to create a computeraccount for the filer in the domain first. If you are joining an AD "domain" you can create the account from the command line on the filer when you run cifs setup. The reason your users are not able to access the filer in workgroup mode is probably your old ONTAP release. In 5.x you have to connect with plain text passwords. If the clients connecting are NT4 or later they will try to use encrypted passwords. Thanks all for responding so fast, Timothy and Stephen were the one's harping on resolving the issue to be either at filer end or Veritas end. And this approach proved correct. As soon they asked me to check dump for root volume ... i remembered that i hadn't checked this for root, but done a dump for other volumes , just to ascertain whether the SCSI channel was the issue . I checked the same today, and bingo > dump 0uf nrst0a /vol/vol0 DUMP: creating "/vol/vol0/../snapshot_for_backup.26" snapshot. DUMP: could not create "backup" snapshot : No more snapshots available. Please delete one or more snapshots before trying backup again. DUMP: Dump failed to initialize. DUMP: DUMP IS ABORTED As any backup on our NAS is a Snapshot and backup, so if number of snapshots exceeds the limit allowed by OS , then we cant take any backup on that volume. My problem was some old snapshots lying around, and so the limit of 31 in 6.3.3D11 was reached. I have deleted the snapshots not required, and now all's well. If it fails, it's a problem with the tape or drive. If that works, then I would go to the filer and there are options ndmpd debug 50 and ndmpd debug screen (toggle to turn off all the messages to the screen) ndmpd debug by itself will let you check the values. This will create debug files in the etc directory of the filer. Also, create /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/ndmp so the backup attempt will get logged. Now try a backup with Veritas and you should have some data that you can post or log to either netapp or veritas. Good luck, the error 99s are generic and hard to track down. First, let me say thanks to everyone who responded. Second, it appears that there are no stand alone FC drives on the market now. There are a couple of drives that have native FC support (LTO-2 and STK 9xxx), but they are available only as a part of a library configuration. So in our situation, it looks like we'll just attach the tape drives to the Sun server and back everything up via NFS (hope they don't want CIFS data on the filer!), or they'll have to open the pocket book a bit wider and buy a small autoloader or library. The filers as well as the Backup server are a part of a Win2k domain . On one filer, the backup of /vol/vol0 fails specefically after initiation of the ndmp session with the filer. All other volumes can be backed up properly without any such issues. The ndmp session report on the filer is initiated , tape is opened and then it is displays as halted . A clarification to Michel's excellent information. "...files are always written to disk, whenever they contain a virus or not." The filer will request a scan for viruses when there is a file extension match and the client request is one of: a) file open b) file rename c) file close (but only if the file was modified) When a file is created there is no scan. When the newly created file is written to, there is no scan. Scanning after each write would kill performance. However, when the file is closed, a scan will occur. We use Trendmicro Server Protect for Network Appliance across multiple filers for a few thousand users. - fairly straightforward setup - easy to administer and monitor. Incidents and outbreaks are well reported - Pattern updates and notification is solid - Our vendor support has been excellent Definitely worth considering against any of the other major vendors. I am getting a FAS270c for a small project. The users are concerned about the data security and do not want the data to cross the wire to our current backup solution. So, we're limited to a couple of direct attached tape drives on the FAS270 because the amount of data does not justify a small library. Is there anyone else out there doing this? What did you use? Tape Backups

All, As I am fairly new to Network Appliances, I would like your opinions on the best method for backing up a larger system. I am using a spectralogic 245 tape jukebox in stacker mode. I am trying to backup two separate volumes in utilizing a no-rewind device. As we are only in the testing mode, there is currently not that much data to back up, however when in full production, we fully expect a 1000+ users with a disk quota of 1 gig. We are not using any third party application such as Veritas or Legato Networker and are only using the dump and restore commands and the options associated with them. The NetApp documentation really is not that informative and I thought maybe some of the more experienced users out there may have some helpful suggestions. Thank you in advance for any advice, Dan

I am about to consolidate all data storage on to a FAS940 using iSCSI LUNs and CIFS. I was wondering what kind of virus protection companies are using on their appliances for their simple CIF shares. We currently own the Trend Micro suite as well as Symantec suite, if either of those would work. Any input is greatly appreciated. RE: Tape Backups

Thank you for your quick response. I appreciate the reply and advice. However, I am under certain restraints in that there is no wish or desire to purchase any new software and the only stated purpose for the tape backups is for disaster recovery purposes. I was hoping to find out what would be the most efficient way to do multiple volume backups so that I could determine the most efficient way in which to label and record the contents of the tapes. We use veritas netbackup and are very happy with it. Is it a financal restraint stopping you from spending money on a proper backup solution ? If so and you don't want to backup cifs acl's ( well use cifs at all ) then consider using amanda and backing up over nfs. Its got a reasonable chance of working although I would have a tendancy to give it a separate ethernet to work on. if you want to use dump and the stacker then just repeat the device multiple times and I believe it will load the next tape. I also believe you will cost your company more in the long run by not buying good software to do this job. Amanda is good free software but you would have to use nfs, it may be possible to back cifs shares up using samba and amanada. The only way I would be able to run with just a stacker would be to do a weekly dump and fill the device first then empty after the run labeling each of the tapes with the week and tape number.
