Setting the content to minimal is not good enough to give us the information that we need as administrators. This is very disappointing. The seven attachments don't amount to much space(5 at 4K and a 16K and a 20K), but with several systems sending these to the responsible admin team, and their usefulness being only when there is a problem to analyze that is hopefully infrequent, I'd like this request to be *escalated* to add an option to dispense with the attachments or add attachments only when there is a serious problem. You must see that these attachments are completely unnecessary even with 99.5% of real problems they are not necessary or even helpful to conclude what the problem is and fix it. Because we can't select some recipients for minimal and some for complete, if we wish to get useable information to the admins, we still can't send a 'minimal' message to external recipients either and these attachments have information that would be helpful to anyone wishing to get information about our networks and configurations for hostile purposes. I suppose we could disable auto-support and run a script to set and send minimal auto-support externally and then reset it to complete and send to internal distribution, but then we would not get timely urgent messages for crashes and component failures. For the others copied: I am complaining about the seven attachments that accompany every auto-support message after OnTap 6.5 is installed: 200401141304.0.cm_stats.gz 200401141304.0.ems.gz 200401141304.0.exports.gz 200401141304.0.hosts.gz 200401141304.0.rc.gz 200401141304.0.resolv_conf.gz 200401141304.0.syslog_conf.gz And also that we can't build two lists for auto-support with one for minimal and one for complete messages. It seems the server running the rsh script was not in the Filer's host.equiv. After host.equiv updated, the script worked. Should of double check :-) Thanks for the response. I have F820 running DOT 6.4.2P6 with CIFS only. I noticed the cifs audit log does not log all events. The audit log is dump and saved every night at midnight via a rsh script. Looking through several log file, there are only a few entries in each of the file. All of the entries are within 16 minutes after midnight when the audit file is dump. These are the settings. Our MySQL person, who is not on this list, has drafted the question below. thanks alot guys for clearing this up. I'll try to update my version of ntp. I really hate to upgrade my Netapp unless I HAVE to. Right now I have the device syncing with an external time source but would prefer to use our internal time server. I'll see how far I get with this. Thanks again. ntp time synchronization is not working

I have ntp running on my of my linux servers which acts as the time server for my network. I want to have my netapp sync to this server using ntp. However I keep getting error messages like: Tue Jan 6 10:52:19 PST [Java Thread:ALERT]: TimeDaemon: Time server 10.1.88.44 is not responding to time synchronization requests Solaris, linux and windows can sync to this server except for my netapp. (Running NetApp Release 6.2.1R1) Does anyone experience the same problem ... and if so, how did you fix this? The terminal services is not good to manage new hardware resources. 2 tips : - If you need to use Terminal Services - Workaround : Please logoff your session and login again. Now I can see the new hardware resources, the NetApp disks. - Another tip is that you can use another terminal services, for example : Pc Anywhere (not free) or UltraVNC (free) - http://sourceforge.net/projects/ultravnc . I've make tests using PC Anywhere and UltraVNC and this problems doesn't ocurr. If you need more informations or any help, please let me know. Hello, Maybe should you check if your NTP server can be upgraded to a new one. There might be a flaw in the implementation of the protocol that might prevent the Filer to correctly understand the time sync message or on the other hand, a flaw that might prevent NTP server to correctly understand the request from the Filer. I must say that I'm very surprised that a Linux NTP does not work correctly with a Filer... Indeed, we rely on a NTP server on Windows NT 4.0 which is W32Time from Microsoft, a very simple product, and I haven't got any problem synchronizing our Filers with it. Since MS is well known for their "particular" implentation of public protocols, I would not be surprised to have problems with it, which it's not the case! Once the Lun is created and properly set up on the Windows (2000?) server, you should be able to do a scan of your drives in disk manager and it will show up. Someone brings up a general purpose server on the network and being a huge fan of TV pigs, goes immediately for the available host name of arnold. The new arnold is immediatley able to get read permissions on /vol/payroll and several salaries get shared. A new volume gets created on the filer and someone reruns "exportfs -a". Now arnold is able to write as root to the payroll volume. In retrospect, a warning would have been nicer, wild security example aside, but at the time we were trying to patch the exports code and not redesign it to a new specification. We redesigned the exports code in 6.5 and as we no longer preload host IPs for -rw= and -root=, we do not detect that a host is no longer being resolved to IP. As a result, we do not throw away the entire export rule. RE: Legato Networker 7.1 and NDMP backups

We ran into this problem with Syncsort Backup Express. Starting with 6.3 Data ONTAP supports NDMP v4 and sets this as the default. Applications are supposed to negotiate down to the appropriate level for communications, but most backup software packages do not. Use command line "ndmpd version 3" to set the ndmp max version level to 3 (which is what most backup software now support) and your problem should be solved. The main reason for failure is that the filer (ndmp v4) and backup server (ndmp v3)cannot properly communicate and when the first tape is full, filer waits for backup server to perform media controller (picker) commands to change tape. Unfortunately, the backup server is waiting for filer to report that the tape drive is full, needs to be unloaded and new tape mounted. The vicious circle, one waiting for the other until filer finally gives up and times out with tape failure. We upgraded to Legato Networker 7.1 in November last year and since then our NDMP backups have had a problem whereby only one saveset can fit onto a backup tape and then Legato gets an IO error, thinks the tape is full and starts the next one. This only happens with our NDMP backups of the netapp and I was wondering if anyone here had the same problem? We've been working with our Legato support for months and haven't been able to rectify the problem, so I'm going to downgrade to version 6.1.4 as that used to work fine. Bit of a last resort option, but we've not had reliable backups for months and we're at our wits end. Any suggestions before I do this? Sorry folks for posting this up. I was able to sync my netapp by pointing it directly to an outside official time server. That is fine with me. exports

Has anyone seen where exporting a filesystem after a reboot fails because exports has the name of a host that no longer exists? My co-worker had this problem and support said this is by design. This proved to be problematic for us when we had a filer reboot and it failed to export some filesystems because some host had been removed a long time ago. Considering the reliability of the filer, it's reasonable that some hosts in the export list might disappear, I'd rather see this as a warning than something that breaks the filer's ability to serve volumes. exportfs on NetApp Release 6.4.2P6

Hi, I just upgraded from 6.2.2 to 6.4.2P6 and noticed that after creating a new qtree to be exported to a database client the 'exportfs -va' command produces a different behavior. It appears that it unexports and then does a re-export. Before, on 6.2.2, it just did a re-export. Needles to say doing an unexport on a live mounted filesystem is not to nice.
