Warning messages were printed to the console about no arnold being available. We don't let arnold have rw or root permissions, but due to the nature of -access, we have to leave the string "arnold" in that list, meaning that the client arnold would still have read/only access. Someone brings up a general purpose server on the network and being a huge fan of TV pigs, goes immediately for the available host name of arnold. The new arnold is immediatley able to get read permissions on /vol/payroll and several salaries get shared. A new volume gets created on the filer and someone reruns "exportfs -a". Now arnold is able to write as root to the payroll volume. In retrospect, a warning would have been nicer, wild security example aside, but at the time we were trying to patch the exports code and not redesign it to a new specification. We redesigned the exports code in 6.5 and as we no longer preload host IPs for -rw= and -root=, we do not detect that a host is no longer being resolved to IP. As a result, we do not throw away the entire export rule. RE: Legato Networker 7.1 and NDMP backups

We ran into this problem with Syncsort Backup Express. Starting with 6.3 Data ONTAP supports NDMP v4 and sets this as the default. Applications are supposed to negotiate down to the appropriate level for communications, but most backup software packages do not. Use command line "ndmpd version 3" to set the ndmp max version level to 3 (which is what most backup software now support) and your problem should be solved. The main reason for failure is that the filer (ndmp v4) and backup server (ndmp v3)cannot properly communicate and when the first tape is full, filer waits for backup server to perform media controller (picker) commands to change tape. Unfortunately, the backup server is waiting for filer to report that the tape drive is full, needs to be unloaded and new tape mounted. The vicious circle, one waiting for the other until filer finally gives up and times out with tape failure. Legato Networker 7.1 and NDMP backups

We upgraded to Legato Networker 7.1 in November last year and since then our NDMP backups have had a problem whereby only one saveset can fit onto a backup tape and then Legato gets an IO error, thinks the tape is full and starts the next one. This only happens with our NDMP backups of the netapp and I was wondering if anyone here had the same problem? We've been working with our Legato support for months and haven't been able to rectify the problem, so I'm going to downgrade to version 6.1.4 as that used to work fine. Bit of a last resort option, but we've not had reliable backups for months and we're at our wits end. Any suggestions before I do this? Sorry folks for posting this up. I was able to sync my netapp by pointing it directly to an outside official time server. That is fine with me. exports

Has anyone seen where exporting a filesystem after a reboot fails because exports has the name of a host that no longer exists? My co-worker had this problem and support said this is by design. This proved to be problematic for us when we had a filer reboot and it failed to export some filesystems because some host had been removed a long time ago. Considering the reliability of the filer, it's reasonable that some hosts in the export list might disappear, I'd rather see this as a warning than something that breaks the filer's ability to serve volumes. exportfs on NetApp Release 6.4.2P6

Hi, I just upgraded from 6.2.2 to 6.4.2P6 and noticed that after creating a new qtree to be exported to a database client the 'exportfs -va' command produces a different behavior. It appears that it unexports and then does a re-export. Before, on 6.2.2, it just did a re-export. Needles to say doing an unexport on a live mounted filesystem is not to nice. Hi, We have a new F760 we just got here - powered it on, booted 6.4.2 from floppy and then used the normal install program to install 6.4.3 over NFS. Everything is fine, but when the machine powers on, it always goes to the menu that it displays when you boot off of the floppy (i.e. 1) normal boot 4) intialize disks, etc). This happens even though there's no floppy in the drive. Is there a flag I can set/unset somewhere that will disable this behavior and have it boot straight to the main OS? disk_update_fw

Sorry if this is a really basic question. I booted off of floppies (5.3.5R2, I believe it was), and reinitialized the array, took a couple of hours, all seemed to go well. But when it was done, it complained about the firmware revision on all the drives, and recommended I run disk_fw_update. However that command does not seem to be one of the available commands when booting from the floppy (and I can't boot from the array yet). What am I missing? Again, sorry if this is a pretty basic question. Any help would be appreciated.

quota report error?

I believe the problem we are having is either a reporting error by 'quota report' or a file system object error. The problem is that we have 4 quota trees that are completely empty but 'quota report' is still showing there is space being used in them. A month ago we moved about 600GB of data from different volumes on 8 740's and 2 230's to newer filers. All of the migrated data was Unix and all were in UNIX type qtree's. All data was moved successfully. The 4 qtrees below had all data migrated off of them, but are still showing space, and files, in quota report: tree 1 vol2 filer1.201 3044 4 89 - /vol/vol2/filer1.201 tree 1 vol1 filer2.101 27272 4 23 - /vol/vol1/filer2.101 tree 5 vol0 filer3.005 60 4 5 - /vol/vol0/filer3.005 tree 3 vol0 filer4.003 2596 4 6 - /vol/vol0/filer4.003 Filer1, filer2, and filer4 are running 6.3.3 and filer3 is running 6.3.1R1. I worked on this with NetApp support and they are not sure what is causing this. They are asking for down-time to further diagnose this, which is not very likely to happen anytime soon. We've tried just about everything with turning quota's on and off and removing and recreating qtrees, to no avail. We also ran wafl iron on one of the volumes. Any other idea's? There is a gotcha, CIFS requires that a passwd file with the following minimum entries: notesnetapp::5432:5432::/: nobody::65535:65535::/: pcuser::65534:65534::/: root::0:1::/: By default this file does not exist and if you are running NFS when you invoke CIFS setup NO passwd file is created. Easiest way to correct this is to shutdown NFS and re-run CIFS setup which will create the required passwd file. Have fun...
