Hello all, can nobody help me?!?! Ist magic ☺ the following thing is: Kernel shows show lun command as pending. LUN disappeared. Server is able to access the LUN, but neither ONTAP CLI nor GUI show the LUN. It was an Exchange LUN that was completely full during an upgrade. When the filer rebooted, the LUN couldn't register when the controller came back up. NetApp Support ran some commands in diag mode that at least showed the LUN still existed. Anyone have a recommendation for a global 3rd party support vendor?

We've got FAS systems across the globe, some of which are already EOL/EOS. Even the ones that are not, after year 3 NetApp SupportEdge gets crazy expensive. We have used 1 vendor, but I'd like to hear if anyone else has a good experience with one we could work with also. Thank you.

widelinks and catastrophic deletes?

Hello All, We're looking at using NetApp's Widelinks features to map symbolic links such that SMB-connected users can click through to other UNCs (on different systems) regardless of whether the system they're connected to has a mount to the other system. I've never taken a close look at it before today and it feels like magic. You more or less map a regex so that any link that starts with (say) /mnt/foo/bar/ and has a counterpart on a separate SMB server i.e. \\good_times\life-is-good\<file:///\\good_times\life-is-good\> will translate along the lines of /mnt/foo/bar/giddyup/ = \\good_times\life-is-good\giddyup\<file:///\\good_times\life-is-good\giddyup\>. But I also found something really scary. If from a linux machine I go to /mnt/foo/bar/ and delete the symlink "giddyup" all is well, I just delete the symlink. But if from an SMB client I navigate to \\good_times\life-is-good\<file:///\\good_times\life-is-good\> and delete giddyup I don't remove the link, I delete all of giddyup from the target. Found this on NA's site: "Note that if a client attempts to delete a local symbolic link (absolute or relative), only the symbolic link is deleted, not the target file or directory. However, if a client attempts to delete a widelink, it might delete the actual target file or directory that the widelink refers to. Data ONTAP does not have control over this because the client can explicitly open the target file or directory outside the storage system and delete it." I've tried changing the NA CIFS Share's properties so that symlinks are RO, tried changing the properties of the actual presented link/folder to RO, and tried changing the top level of the target folder to RO, with no difference in behavior. Anybody else using this feature? If so, how are you doing it safely? NetApp API authentication

Having started to review some of our filer automation scripts, I'm starting to look in a bit more detail at the API. My first conclusion is - the perl SDK doesn't actually seem to do anything much - it seems to be a reimplementation of LWP and and XML Parser. Given I have LWP and XML::Twig installed, and am making API calls just fine, is there anything I'm missing here? Aside from that though - authentication types. I currently use ssh public-private key pairs, in a trusted account on a management station to enable 'doing stuff' with filers. It _looks_ like my only option with the API is to create a designated service account, and assign permissions... and then embed a username and password in a script somewhere. That just doesn't sit well with me - I like what ssh-agent will do in 'unlocking' key files, and I don't like embedding (potentially privileged) usernames and passwords ... anywhere. Does anyone have a better solution than a couple of designated API users (privileged and read only) with a file somewhere embedding their username and password? Does anyone have a better approach?

storacl / local ontap only users

Toasters, I have a client who needs to use SnapDrive for Windows. I'd like to use storacl to limit SnapDrive visibility to that client's volumes and fibre channel luns. I'd also like to avoid joining the filer to the AD domain. I created a local ontap account that is a member of the local administrators ontap group. I can configure SnapDrive's transport protocol settings to connect to the filer using the ontap account via https. SnapDrive see's all of the volumes on that filer as expected. Is it possible to create storacl rules that apply to SnapDrive for Windows when connecting via https using a local ONTAP user to a filer that is not a member of domain? Everything I see in the storacl documentation seems to only apply to filers that are a member of a domain. Much appreciated, Phil

Hello, we have a LUN that is suddenly „invisible“ by our Netapp Filer. The Volume has the Capacity oft he LUN – thats seem OK, but the LUN is missing. The Host (it is a ESX with a Windows Server) see the LUN and ist mapped to the Windows Server and in the Server the volume has a letter and can handle files. What can we do, so the LUN is back and visible. The LUN is not in the Systemmanager and not in the CLI. In the Volume is a file that seems the LUN, but someway is called „stale“. Hi all, I have a 3170 FAS, with 25 shelves of 1TB disk , 14 per shelf. I use the command storage show disk, and see al 350 disks, yet if I use the command disk show, I see one 242. Can anyone suggest what may be causing the difference in output? Thanks, Mark Sent from my iPhone

Is there a way to use fpolicy as an alerting system for ransomware infections? Everything I've read about native policies seems to indicate that it's only for blocking files by extension, but is there a way to have it generate a notification of some sort when it blocks something?

NwkThd_00:warning]: NFS response to client xx.xx.xx.xx for volume 0x1234567 was slow, op was v3 write, 65 > 60 (in seconds) I have a filer head, on which I'm hosting ESX datastores. I've had a couple of instances now of this error (or one rather similar). It correlates with VMware getting upset and VMs going read only. But it doesn't actually give me any insight into what is going on. Has anyone run into this, and can give some further insight as to what might be causing and where I can look?

Toasters, It's great to see showmount back in ontap 8.3. I'm having an issue with it though. It shows multiple root entries ("/") presumably because of the ls mirrors for the vs root. Is there a way to disable this display? Is this a bug? Mounting works fine. But we have a lot of systems that use automount, and a lot of processes that parse the showmount output, so I'm told. Hello All, I see how/where I would set up the uploading of the backup files to an outside destination but only via FTP or to a writeable (put-ready) http destination. Where do those files actually sit on the cluster? Anywhere that I can reach via NFS or CIFS or any other way, like through the SPI web interface? Hope to hear from you, Randy

Hide snapshots from NFS clients in 8.3.1

In 7-mode we are able to make snapshots accessible, but invisible to NFSv3 clients. In this mode there is a .snapshot directory, but if you ‘ls’ that directory it appears empty. However, if you ls .snapshot/hourly.0 say then you can see that the snapshot is in fact there. We now have an 8.3.1 CDOT filer and have not been able to work out how to reproduce the behaviour. The snapshots are either accessible and visible (which causes problems for programs which walk the tree) or not accessible at all. NetApp support have not been able to help so far. Can anybody on this list? Add vfiler0 to a Domain

Toasters, I have a 7-mode system that hosts a number of non-default-vfilers. Several non-default-vfilers have been added to an Active Directory domain. vfiler0, however, is not a member of the domain on either controller. I have a new Fiber Channel client that is going to utilize this 7-mode system. This client plans to use a SnapManager product that would benefit from vfiler0 being added to the domain. Will adding vfiler0 to the domain (cifs setup) affect the configuration of any of the existing vfilers? Thanks, -Phil

managing local accounts / passwords

We have use cases (e.g., backups) that require the use of local accounts on our NetApps, and to generate NDMP-specific passwords. We are using DFM for monitoring and alerting on our arrays. I see the dfm command line offers the ability to create, delete, modify such local user accounts, but there is no option to change the password? Am wondering how others manage these local accounts across multiple filers? We're still on 7-mode by the way. Flexcache w/ Clustered OnTap

I was curious if anyone knew if the following config is supported. Our 'main' filer has a volume that we make available in remote offices using flexcache. All of our filers are still running 7-Mode and we are about to do a forklift upgrade of our main filer. It is tempting to go to Clustered OnTap but its not clear if I would also have to upgrade all the filers in remote offices to Clustered OnTap at the same time as well or if I can continue to use 7-Mode and still be able to access the volume on the main filer via flexcache. Local netgroup file on 8.2 c-mode.

The local netgroup file is loaded onto the cluster via a URL. Do you folks know of any way to check what the current netgroup file is in effect, before loading a netgroup file on over the top? I've been bitten by a number of landmines left by previous admins in this particular shop, and I'd like to confirm that everything present in the current file is also present in the new file, before doing the load. We are now using zmbackup/zmrestore to a nfs volume, but that is not really very efficient nor fast. I was wondering if any of you has implemented a better solution. SnapDrive shrink lun

Happy New Year Toasters! Quick question for the group, we have a lun that was increased from about 3TB to 7TB. We now would like to shrink it down. My understanding is that I can only cut it by half due to a limitation of the OS (Win2008R2). My other concern is data corruption, etc. I have the option of adding a new lun and migrating data. Hi, Before I take a long journey with NetApp support, let me ask you guys. I have CentOS 6.7 server and I'm trying to attach a cDOT LUN to it as path discovery fails with: kernel: scsi: host 0 channel 3 id 0 lun4194304 has a LUN larger than allowed by the host adapter However it only fails with the message above for one HBA out of two installed into the server. The HBAs (drivers, firmware etc) are identical. The HBA are Qlogic relabeled as HP. So RedHat has a KB article for it https://access.redhat.com/solutions/67157 and it's advised to contact storage appliance vendor. I've seen that once, it was due to some FW files being absent under /lib/firmware, it's not the same this time. Has anyone seen that before? Cheers, Vladimir
