I believe that there is a command "vol add -n" that will zero out the disks without actually adding this to a volume- just saw this in training (thanks Jim!). RE: Cluster failover question

Below has worked many times on our F740C nodes and the data on both nodes is accessible the entire time (well outside of the takeover and giveback): - Manually takeover the problem filer from the working filer. (cf takeover) - Power off and unplug everything (cluster cables, FCAL cables, everything) from the problem filer head (only the head, not the disk shelves). - Replace whatever needs replacing. - Connect everything except the cluster connection. I can't remember if I left the FCAL cable to the partners disks disconnected as well, but I think I did just to be cautious. I do know I keep the FCAL connection to it's own disks connected. - Boot the problem filer with the diagnostic disk and run all diagnostics. As long as you cleanly shutdown you can do NVRAM tests, and as long as the cluster is not connected you can run all the MB tests. You can run the memory tests with everything connected. - After diagnostics run, take out the diag disk and reboot the filer. It should stop at the "waiting for giveback..." statement. - Do a cf giveback on the working filer. I've done this about 10 times on a F740C and F880C and have never had a problem with data not being available, or becomming corrupted. Just for the record, data center power outages cause most of these failures, not the NetApps. Is there anything we need to do before the shutdown so that the individual disks can be pulled and used as replacements in other 720s? I'm not trying to move any data, just grab individual disks that are part of a an existing volume on the retired 720 and use them as hot spares on another 720. Oracle service termination

Toasters, The following is a description of a problem that occurred over three nights last week. Although vendors are involved in attempting to determine the cause and suggest 'recommended practise' changes there may be someone out there who has experienced a similar issue. What has been observed is; - Oracle unable to write to a redo log file and its mirror on drive E: or F:, logged error: "O/S-Error: (OS 64) The specified network name is no longer available" - The Oracle Log Writer terminates the Oracle instance. - The service "OracleService<SID>" terminates. This has occurred in one instance on seven Servers at the same time and on other nights with a smaller number of Servers. Backups across the Network have been taking place at this time and we are therefore lead to believe that this is load related. There are seven Windows based Servers running SAP/Oracle. Five are Win2k/SP3, one WIn2K/SP4, and one is NT/SP6a . Oracle on NT is 7.2.4 Oracle on Win2K is 8.1.7 SAP used is 1 x 3.1i (NT), 3 x 4.6c, 3 x 3.0b These servers use data drives mapped off a F820 with 3TB on 3 x DS-14 shelves. Eight volumes are used with all CIFS shares in qtrees. Logs and executables are kept on mapped drives not local disk. The systems are attached to a Foundry (Bigiron400) via 1GB fibre. The F820 connects to the Foundry via trunked dual 1GB fibre (dual single port cards). The Filer appears to check out OK with just uptime messages in the logs at this time with no link-loss or any other indication. Netdiag -v reports only on small average packet size for a couple of hosts and a small number of retransmissions. Ifstat looks good. The Foundry appears to check out ok with no indication of packet loss or similar. There are a number of error messages in the Oracle logs. I have listed a couple of these below. What is interesting is that at no time has any of these machines indicated redirector problems in the event logs at the time of the event with the only event being the termination of the Oracle service. Some points. iSCSI may be looked at in the future. It is not an option at the moment. The automatic hourly snapshots on two volumes are being removed. All future snapshots will be scheduled. At first glance this looks like some sort of redirector issue where Oracle is sensitive to Mapped drive loss. In one log Oracle places a log entry in a log on a drive that it is reporting the loss of. If this is the case then why does Win2K not report drive loss?. Would Oracle not be responding to an SMB indication of drive loss ?. If the redirector is being hit and not itself at fault then what infrastructure related issue might cause this?. Cifs share question

I'm an admitted neophyte when it comes to Windows networking and am trying to do more than perhaps possible in my environment. I have a data source that I need to share "R/O" out to the greater population of desktops but my Filer is NOT bound to a DC. My "cifs access" on the share is "everyone read". I *also* want to have local (users who have a local account on the filers "workgroup" user db) mount the same share R/W. But when they attempt to mount the share the "everyone" R/O permissions apply. Is there a way to specify the R/W mount access writes in my case? The desktops that are mounting the share are in a Novell NDS domain. :-( Thanks in advance. -Rob

Xbase database files on Netapp filers

I'm using an application that uses this database format, and the application seems to be impacted due to NFS related or Netapp specific issues. I'm working the issue with Netapp currently but thought I would ask other netapp users as well. netapp and berkely db optimization

I've got some questions that I'm hoping people on this list may be able to help answer. Background first. We're working on an application that uses alot of Berkeley DB hash files, via DB_File in perl. Right now, we are looking at about 30k individual databases. Overall, the application currently hit's about 1000 of these databases a minute with a few hundred reads per use and potentially an equal number of writes. Occasionally the application does grooming on the databases, rebuilding them to reclaim space and expire unused entries. Each database will be around 5 megs. We're testing on a pair of clustered 760s with half of the anticipated load. Each filer has 2 shelves of 18s. The load generated by the application is enough to max the disks on both filers. CPU utilization is around 40% and ops are generally under 1000. Disk read's average about 12mb/s, net out, around 5mb/s per filer. Now, here's the question. Under berkeley db you can control the hash bucket size which will default to the filesystem block unless other wise specified. Does anyone know what the optimum bucket size would be on a NetApp? Greetings! As you read this, I don't want you to feel sorry for me, because, I believe everyone will die someday. My name is Kumpe Arno 72yrsold a gold merchant in Spain.I have been diagnosed with cancer . It has defiled all forms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts. I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone(not even myself)but my business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was always hostile to people and only focused on my business as that was the only thing I cared for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world. I believe when God gives me a second chance to come to this world I would live my life a different way from how I have lived it. Now that God has called me, I have willed and given most of my property and assets to my immediate and extended family members as well as a few close friends. I want God to be merciful to me and accept my soul so, I have decided to give alms to charity organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations in Spain, Algeria and Malaysia. Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself anymore. I once asked members of my family to close one of my accounts and distribute the money which I have there to charity organization in Bulgaria and Pakistan, they refused and kept the money to themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contended with what I have left for them. Now, I am writing you from my laptop computer in my hospital bed where I await my time to come. known problems with linux 2.4.21 kernels?

Hi all, we've found some odd failure messages at all linux machines running 2.4.21 here. Those machines report "NFS: server filerX-vif1 not responding, timed out" over the whole day again and again. All machines are either some DELL 2650 or HP Proliant DL360/DL380. All machines have a "Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme" Gigbit NIC. It seems that the same type of machines with linux kernel 2.4.18 have no NFS problems. Has anyone seen the same problems and if so - is it a kernel problem? The UltraTrak RM15000 we purchased ran about $7K with all 15 drives included. (160gb each) It's not a bad device as we have it plugged into a Dell Poweredge 2450 running windows 2000. Though I would rather have it plugged into a Linux machine...that might be further down the road. You might wanna look into windows 2003 server with shadow copy though I don't know much about it at all. Maybe someone who has played with that feature will shed some light on this. Of course it would be better to have another NetApp but I couldn't get this into our IT budget. Dear Toasters, I would like to poll all the poor people on the list who cant afford/justify the need for clusters and instead use other cheap solution to provide redundancy of their data. Even a simple IDE-RAID solution, with some kind of heartbeat system... I have a couple of netapp's here on-site and in the event of a disaster, where the RAID array's are lost and i need to rebuild from scratch, i would like to have someother system serving the data i need, albeit at much lower performance.
