Hope you can help... I've read TIP 218 on the now.netapp web site... But it is not very clear on how the %used column is calculated. When it says the calculation is carried out like below this snapshop ------------------- x 100 Total disk space in the system Is the "Total disk space in the system" the 1) Total disk space in the volume(inc snapshot reserve)... or 2) total disk space in the snapshot reserve ... or 3) total disk space in the volume after snapshot reserve is taken ! I think this is a VERY counter intuitive method of displaying space used .... Thanks Stuart Munn

Tue, 02 Mar 2004 10:00:30 -0500 MARKET-TORQUE - The European Unions Premier U.S. NASDAQ Timer...Dateline 3-02-04 New trading range (as of 3/02/04): Target-- 1.74 - True Health. Inc. (OTCBB: TRHL) Monday, after the close, the Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) Oscillator rose above its signal line indicating a trend reversal. Never before in this stocks history have the lines crossed this early. This means a huge reversal and strong up-trend. The stock is now headed upward. This time it indicates 1.74. This is exactly what happened in late November, three months ago when the stock ran from 0.69 to 1.48 in less than a month. The stock is in position for a higher high and a higher low. The volume is very high. Also, TRHL just started again an unusual trading pattern. Large blocks of shares are being bought. Is this because the earnings are due shortly? Read on. EARNINGS REPORT New financials are due out very soon (looking for two weeks) - the stock has started to climb back toward its recent high. TRHL has had seven consecutive quarters of revenue growth. Last quarter, revenues were up 385% and 329% for the three and nine month periods, respectively. The July 31, 2003 quarter revenues were up 412%. But this is what we are looking at. Back in November TRHL started moving up approximately two weeks before its quarterly financial report. you are right : ) in theory, widelinks could be greatly used to transparently make a user mount /vol/vol0/a_dir to /vol/vol1/another_dir but - widelinks is resered for cifs - and there is some problem to make them work as the documentation explain it I only succed in with using the /etc/symlink.translation file also, some related bug has been corrected in earlier version, so one should keep in mind widelinks are not always working great and should open a case with Netapp in order to make them work the way you want Carolyn S. The max volume size of a F760 is 2 TB. So you must create at least 2 volumes. The config looks like 14x72GB disks (FC9 BCS) 14x144GB disks (DS14) This takes us to the maximum of the F760, 3TB, but we can only seem to add 14x72GB disks (1 72GB for spare, 2 RAID groups) 8x144GB disks (1 144GB for spare, 1 RAID group) These disks are all in one volume, /vol/vol0, but we can't seem to add any of the additional 5 144GB disks to the volume. When we try to add the disks the system tells us it can't do this. From what I've read we should simply need to indicate how many disks we want to add to the volume (ie 5) and it should create a new RAID group if needed. In this case our RAIDGROUP size is set to 8, so it should create the new RAIDGROUP. But this isn't happening. We're running DoT 6.4R1. Have we hit the maximum filesystem size for the F760? I'm not sure what the limit is. We're well within the 56 disks/loop limit. Any help would be appreciated. If we have hit a filesystem size, then we'll probable have to create a new volume (which we'd prefer not to do). CPU workload increase after upgrade

Hi All, I recently upgrade a F740 from 5.3.4 to 6.4.1 without problems except that the CPU workload increase 10 % with the same traffic. Is this performace correct? Are new releases more CPU intensive than olders? Any comment would be apreciated. Thanks

Hi There is an RFE (Request for Enhancement) to allow you to use the /etc/hosts.equiv for this in a similar way to what is possible on the filer; it is not currently scheduled. The RFE number is 73672. It might be worth contacting Sales to push to get this implemented. You will probably also want to modify the host registry so that the Oracle services are dependant on and start after the lanmanworkstation service. Without those edits the oracle services may fail to start on reboot because they can't access the remote shares. Biggest issue with CIFS and database is stateful nature of the CIFS protocol and "robustness" (is that a word?) of the re-director on Windows. What this means is that if the re-director gets overwhelmed (can happen, but you may never see it) the CIFS connection will be lost then re-established, but the Oracle Service will crash. Usually not a big problem, but you do need to manually re-start it. Don't get me wrong. ISCSI is great, and I have have outstanding success with it. I will say that ISCSI is a protocol like CIFS so the Application may need a dependency on it should you have spanning tree on your Switch ( ~30 second network negotiation prior to port activation. If you are not needing it, then portfast enable off that option and then the port will be online asap. As for the ISCSI driver, as long as the NIC is online quickly, we rarely see any issues with the Oracle services in the same light as you mention the CIFS. Good luck with it, and you can ask more specifics off list if you like. Keep in mind the space limitations of LUN's. I am just reminding the list. As performance goes, I would suggest getting a baseline on Cifs and see the difference on ISCSI. It can be drastic at the protocol, but the Filer needs to be ready for the performance internals. It can be a LOT of net traffic when you actually open up the GigE's for top performance. We have a customer running 2 x 8.1.7 and 2 x 9.x oracle databases on a F820. In addition they are running 1 x informix, 1 x MSSQL2K and 1 x domino database on the same filer. No problem at all. Oracle supports UNC path for filenames, so you don't even have to map the drive. The customer has never complained about performance. If you don't like UNCpaths, you probable should consider iSCSI. You will get a drive that windows treats like a local drive and performance might be a bit higher. Hello, If you plan to upgrade to 6.5 make sure you check your /etc/exports file after rebooting with 6.5 for the first time. I just upgraded an 840 and an 880 and on both machines the exports file has been rewritten giving everyone read-only access. Cluster failover question

We've always had cluster failover on our filers for those times when something goes wrong on one filer and the other filer can serve the data. Realistically speaking, that rarely happens because the filers are stable. However, as time passes and the filers grow older, the develop more and more "personality." For example, we have a pair of F760s that are our problem children. As much as we'd like to pawn them off to another group, put them out to pasture, or replace them outright, that does not appear to be happening in the near future. Unfortunately, one of them has now developed a problem with a memory DIMM on the motherboard. In the past, we've had the luxury of being able to shut down the clustered pair of filers, but in our price conscious environment, people are asking what is the point of clustering if we can't do maintenance and keep the data available. So, my question is this: is it possible to work on a filer head while serving the data up from the cluster partner? My concern is that you are upsetting the FC-AL integrity because we'll have to unplug the FC-AL cables from the adapters on the head when we pull the motherboard tray out. Then, since the recommended course of action is to run diagnostics after reseating and/or replacing the DIMMs, could we run a small set of the diagnostics before plugging in the FC-AL cables? Maybe we could / should use the FC-AL reset function from the diagnostics menu to get the loops back to normal? Maybe we've just been too cautious with our data, but I'd like to hear from other toasters if this is possible, advisable, and safe before putting our data at risk. MX records

It appears the netapp configuration for a mail server doesn't lookup MX records (which I guess is used for autosupport). I have two MX records for my mail relay but no A record (by design). Have two A records is not desirable because MTA's will be confused and end up deferring mail for a little bit. I believe with two MX records, they try one then the other. With A records, they only get one back originally, try, defer, then continue to fail that piece of mail until it's re-queued later and happens to hit the other A record. Since dual A records are round robin, there is no real way of assuring it doesn't get the same A record back when it decides to look it up again (and maybe it even caches it for some time, not sure).
