Simple Concise Filer Monitoring

Has anyone created a simple and readable web monitoring application for Filers? Sure there's Cricket, MRTG, and RRDtool, but I'd like something alittle more tidy for quick glances. I'd love something like phpSysInfo: http://phpsysinfo.sourceforge.net/ It seems like leveraging PHP or PERL CGI, with alittle RRD possiblably tossed in we could have a tool vastly superior to the aging "Filer At-A-Glance", which relies on Java (yuck) and doesn't supply everything in one nice page. Has anyone done something like this or feel it's a worthwhile cause? benr.

Hi G, To get SRM information from DFM about files kept on a filer, you put the host agent on a system that is mounting the filesystem(s) from the filer that you are interested in (do the corresponding thing for the CIFS share case). We don't have SRM. We only run DFM 3.0 on a Windows 2000 box. What is SRM? Any value? Has anyone rebuilt the DFM database? We're running the same SQL Anywhere DB since DFM was in beta. Performance seems to be slow, the DB is like 500MB and we are getting messages like this when we startup: I. 03/31 20:12:34. Page size too small for this database I. 03/31 20:12:34. Database was created with older software and may benefit from being rebuilt We're getting ready to upgrade to 3.0 and want to know if we can alleviate these messages and improve performance by rebuilding the DB. I haven't had any problems with doing this. I've done it two or three different times. The only thing that I had problems with is the SRM data. I had to delete my paths and re-add them once I was running on the new system. The database was crashing while I was walking a device tree so I deleted the SRM path and re-entered it. Does anyone have any experience installing Oracle 10g RAC on filers, both binaries and dbf files? Can you comment on this a bit? There are numberous new features in 10g that make it a more appealing platform than 9i. While there are significant advantages for 64bit system, this has always been the case, thats nothing new. Hi Jack, A lun is for WAFL just a file, so the snapshot is similar as by a file and is a part of the volume. We have always a separate NIC for our I-scsi traffic. On the filer and also on the server (we use I-SCSI for our SQL servers (PeopleSoft and others applications) and our exchange servers). When you use the same NIC for all your traffic, on havy load, you can get some delays. This is important when you have a high IO application and response time is very important. All, We have a FAS960 with ~2TB and we are going to implementing ISCSI for a specific message application (Not MS Based). I am trying to understand how snapshots work with ISCSI. Say I have a 400 GB volume with a 200GB lun. When a snapshot is taken, are the snapshots stored in side the lun or in the volume. (I think is in the volume?) Also, we currently have a Quad GigE card in a GigabitEtherchannel. Should I use the ISCSI over that GigEtherChannel or should I dedicate a GigE card. Snapmirror to tape is what you want. NDMP backups are just BSD dumps using a snapshot for consistency. Snapmirror to tape will get all snapshots. I think the answer to this question is no, but is there any way to get an NDMP backup of a netapp which includes all the current snapshots. I ask because it would be nice to perform a weekly backup and get all the intervening nightly snapshots. I can imagine a few problems however (the number of file names blowing out for starters). The "vol" command set didn't exist, instead there was the "disk" command set for adding, swapping, failing, and removing. :) This was in the SCSI days so on an F630 with four Fast/Wide/Differential SCSI controllers and 13 disks on two 3U shelves per controller, you could have a max of 52 disks in the volume/raid group. This took up most of a rack. At the time, we ran about 20 of these with 50 data disks, one parity, and one hot-spare. With the 4GB disks in DEC StorageWorks shelves, we got about 150GB per filer total while the yield on the Eurologics shelves with 9GB disks was more like 325GB. -- Jeff

Good insight, Jason, our R200s are targeted for useable storage, not performance. A few points though... The drives are IDE, so will suffer a higher failure rate. When Netapp released the R200, they enforced DP, and limited even a DP raidsize to 14. Also, Netapp sells the R200's in 8TB chunks (2 shelves). No longer can you buy just the number of drives you actually need. You now have to buy by the shelf. All volumes mus be identical. What administration type hosts do you have (*nix or windows)? If it is MS based, you could write or get written a small app that will utilize ssh and run commands remotely. I have just 1 database sitting on 2 volumes on netapp02 that are 600GB together. The database is only about 250GB or so. The volumes were sized that way to give sufficient performance (26 X 36GB drives). We are using QT SnapMirror to another filer's (netapp) volume so we can backup to tape from there. We would not want to do volume snapmirror since we will have to waste quite a bit of disk space in order to do so. So now that we are doing DR, it seems logical to do it from the qtrees that were already snapmirrored on netapp. We really want to avoid having to do it from the original volumes since these disks are already being hit very hard by the production database. We are actually considering adding more disks to the production database even though we are only 43% full just so we can get better performance. If we have to do volume snapmirrors this will at least double if not triple that requirement and it seems outrageous to have to do so. Best solution is to have cascading Qtree SnapMirror. Anyone know if this is in the works? I can't believe that I'm the only one who needs this. Doing volume mirroring would eat up huge amounts of space on the R200 destination filer for no good reason. So I mirrored all the qtrees while doing a hot backup operation. Seems to work OK. Watch out! It takes extra space for the mirror snaps on the source filers! For what it's worth: NetApp filers stand the OFA on it's head, and there don't seem to be many people walking around who know this yet. There are some good hints on Oracle configuration on now.netapp.com, but they don't go into extreme detail at all. In the next couple weeks, I hope to change this on a few of my test/dev databases by making one huge volume and exporting the database mounts from qtrees. I will recover SIX parity drives for reuse as data if I do this! Keep up the chatter. This is an important topic that few seem to understand well. And the archive logs are averaging only about 4.5GB. That is 1/5 the size. It is fairly significant when you are shipping it half-way across the country! (We are in Foothill Ranch, CA and our DR site is in St. Louis). If that is true then management will probably choose to go with log shipping as opposed to SnapMirroring the data. I'm going through the data that we are SnapMirroring to figure out if there is something wrong with our setup. I think we are actually SnapMirroring the archive logs as well. Has anyone else been down this path? Any other ideas or suggestions? We are thinking that the log shipping method is going to involve alot more manual work and would like to avoid it if possible but we need to have good justification for that as well. Derek

Oracle NetApp and async_io

Several years ago, we put our Oracle datafiles on our F880. We quickly found out that if you expect to do things like mount your database, you should turn off async_io. That was on Solaris 7, Oracle 8.1.6, and DOT 6.2.2 BTW. It's well known that Solaris 7 had really bad support for async_io, so I'm sure that has improved since. Once I finally get to bed this Sunday morning, we should be on Oracle 8.1.7.4, Solaris 9 MU 5, and DOT 6.3. In looking at the NOW site, I found some docs that recommend turning it on, and some that recommend turning it off. I'm going to try to squeeze an official answer from NetApp tomorrow, but I'm curious what experiences other people have had. Any comments? Jason
