VSCAN and Backsups

Hi all I am backing up data on a R200 over a 1 gig connection. The hardware that I'm using is. When I enable VSCAN on the filer the mb/minute in the backup job start going down, when I turn off VSCAN the MB/ minute start going up. I have set vscan options mandatory_scan to off. The VSCAN server and the filer are not connected via a gig speed its 100/mb im wondering if I make the connection from r200 to the VSCAN server 1 gig that this might speed up my backup jobs Skip Tape Library: ADIC, Scalar 24, firmware version 109A, SCSI connected to ISGBKHA Tapes Used: HP Ultrium 400 GB, LTO Media Files Backed up: Incremental - 648,800 files, 300 GB Full - 2,340,000 files, 970 GB

Hi all In an effort to speed up our backups we want to know if it's possible to connect a ADIC, Scalar 24, firmware version 109A, SCSI connected to a R200 filer, and have the R200 run the backup jobs. Thanks for any input Skip

NetApp admin in Pheonix region?

Hi All, I am a long time user of Netapp hardware, having bought a 1440 FASserver back when it was new and cutting edge :-). I've left the computer world for a couple of years, and when my brother started to have server issues I recommended a Netapp to him and his small company in Pheonix. Trying to help him get this set up remotely has shown itself to be impossible, and he has no external network connection that I can get in and configure his system. He's got a fresh Linux install, and a 700 series Netapp that has a CIFS and NFS license. The problem is permissions, he was unable to configure it so it would work with a Windows domain server (preferred) and he was unable to use the Linux box (UNIX illiterate) to get a simple password file set up and operational. There are too many small tweaks that can get set that screw him up. It isn't an advanced install, it just needs to have the setup completed so that Windows2000 users can connect up and have a home directory and authentication on the server, and a private directory exported for the Linux database server to store some files. Is there anyone in the Pheonix area who can handle a short paid consulting job to get this straightened out? I'd go, but I'm 2,000 miles away. Thanks, - darcy

Skip, Oplock timeouts are fairly normal behaviour for CIFS oplocks. The vscan error can be a problem as I believe it may indicate that the virus scanner has not responded in time to a file scan request. This means that access to the file was given to the user (CIFS requestor) before the virus scan was completed. If the file was infected, then there is a chance your client may have been infected. Why is this happening? Maybe your vscan box is too busy and can't service all the requests and/or network connectivity is slow or there are errors. What kind of load are you seeing on your vscan box? What type of network connectivity? 1Gb, 100Mb? Maybe do a netdiag on the filer and check network connectivity for the AV box. Skip, Send us the filer output from this command (I find rsh/ssh the best for this); Options autosupport I am guessing you are trying to use the http/https for ASUPs, but I won't be sure until you send me that output. Also paste us a few lines from the /vol/vol0/etc/messages (\\<filer>\etc$\messages) file that concern these failed ASUPs. You seem to be logging into FilerView ok, so I am assuming there is no http authentication problems there. Skip, What kind of backup hardware are you using? Is it NDMP, direct attach SCSI etc. Tape technology? How many files are trying to backup? More files are going to take longer. Are you doing volume level or qtree level backups? What quantity of data are we talking here? The only virus software that would come into play with this is the trend for filers on the R200 because all the data that we backup is on the R200, I'm wondering if its because of the AV on the netapp that is slowing this down? Only doing scheduled scans would leave you with a significant risk of infection with the rate that viruses spread today. Plus, on a large filer, a complete file-by-file scan might take hours if not days...that's a long window of opportunity for viruses to infect files and other clients to pick them up. And you're right, the viruses don't know how to infect the filer per se. The reason you want the virus scanning is to prevent other infected machines from infecting files on the filer. In other words, virus scans your network, find the file share, and infects every doc and exe file it finds on the filer, possibly thousands of infected files or more in a very short time. Now, your filer is full of infected files. Some other client, with no a/v or an insufficiently-updated a/v definition reads those files and gets infected itself, spreading the infection further. Before integrated a/v was available for the filers, we did the best we could with daily virus scans, which took several hours. We are using Trend AV for our FAS 250 and R200. IS there a way to tell Vscan to do scheduled scans instead of scanning every file that is currently being accessed? Also is it really necessary to have a AV scanner on the Filler? Check the Windows Domain Controllers listed as having connection with the Filer. I think the command is > cifs domaininfo I seen this msg when one of the DC's link with the Filer is broken. Hi Aaron, we also have SNMP Problems since we are using Ontap 6.5.1x. Problem is, that qtrees were not listed in our perl-coded filermonitor. Some qtrees on some of our filer were not listed over snmp-queries. - but Ontap command "quota report" works for all qtrees. Looks like its not a DFM Problem, but an(other) Ontap Problem. Please can you tell, if you know something new on that problem Another hint: DFM 3.0 and Ontap65-versions smaller than 6.5.1R1P8 lead to timeouts, because of an SNMP Bug in Ontap. We went through extensive DFM problems and had a long case running with Netapp after an upgrade of ONTAP from 6.4.2P6 to 6.5.1R1. Oracle on Filers

I may be asking the obvious here but who dedicates their Oracle->Filer traffic to just *one* Filer? IE: That Filer *ONLY* handles Oracle->NFS->Filer traffic. Our CIFS traffic has grown significantly since we bought our FAS940 and I'm now dubious about mixing CIFS/Desktop services with Enterprise critical Oracle services. Currently we have a few small DB's (read-only) on the Filer but are moving to step things up over the next year with Regards to Oracle. (we are looking at RAC). So: Would ALAWYS or SOMETIMES or NEVER mix Oracle and Desktop Filer services on one filer? :-) -Bob B.

Bob, It really depends on how much Oracle and CIFS traffic you have. That being said, the FAS940 is a very capable filer. On one of the FAS940C cluster we are serving Oracle on NFS for over 1200 users and also serving CIFS traffic for about that many users without any problem. The main issue for Oracle is the number of disk that you are using. Our Oracle database is sitting on 2 dedicated volumes of 13 drives each and we might be adding more disks there to help with the performance. You really need to collect detail statistics to help decide things like that. DFM 3.0 issues

Are there any know issues w/ this version of DFM? We have run DFM 2.3 (older version) on 2 Windows 2000 systems successfully for over a year. We recently upgraded one system to DFM 3.0 and also built a new Windows 2000 server to run DFM 3.0 (fresh install) and we've been experiencing many performance issues. Specifically, the DFM alerting is severely degraded (e.g. alert notifications sent many hours late), and some of the core services are "not responding" on a regular basis (e.g. dfmMonitor, dfmWatchdog, dfmEvent). I believe what you are looking for is Filerview, built into the default features of ONTAP. http://<filername>\na_admin should get you started. Unless you are looking for something more specific. Hi G, In your question, you didn't specify NFS or CIFS. Since I am *much* more comfortable with NFS, I wrote my answer in those terms, and hand waved outside of my comfort zone. In the case of windows, you are correct - you should use UNC paths. You'll also have to tell DFM the name of a CIFS account/password that can be used by the host agent to access the shares. This can be done on a per host agent basis from the Edit Agent Logins page (SRM tab -> Edit Agent Logins) or using a global default (go to the DFM options page, look under Host Agent Options, and configure the Host Agent CIFS Account and the Host Agent CIFS Password). If this doesn't help you, I would recommend that you work through your normal support channel, so that you can get feedback from folks that are more familiar with this specific DFM feature. I've done it two or three different times. The only thing that I had problems with is the SRM data. I had to delete my paths and re-add them once I was running on the new system. The database was crashing while I was walking a device tree so I deleted the SRM path and re-entered it.
