The filer's CIFS implementation follows symlinks within the same share, and if you use widelinks, across shares. This is transparent to the CIFS client except for a DFS redirection in the case of a wide link. For a Windows-side tool that can set Unix symlinks on machines running Data ONTAP, contact your SE. I tried the CYGWIN route. An "ln -s test data" creates a file (seen in DOS windows) that is called data.lnk. CYGWIN in an "ls" command shows it as a symbolic link (data->test). However, if I copy the symbolic link in a DOS window, the new file is a copy of the link, not the data from the file that is linked to. If I copy the file in a CYGWIN, the contents of the linked file is copies (so CYGWIN translates it appropriately). And if I name the file something other than "file.lnk" (e.g. file.dat) in a DOS window, it is no longer a symbolic link. The "shortcuts" that you see on a Windows desktop doesn't resolve at the CreateFile level (operating system call), so it is only handled by Explorer (which is an application, not the operating system). Make sure that your 3550 model of cisco switch supports 9000 byte mtus... there is an asic limitation in some models of that particular switch that doesn't support true jumbo frames. As for setting up etherchannel... int portchannel-1 switchport access vlan x switchport mode access no ip address int g0/1 channel-group 1 mode on int g0/2 channel-group 1 mode on I'm assuming your just creating a plain vanilla etherchannel (not layer 3.) you can also experiment with various loadbalancing algorithms using port-channel load-balance x to see which one works best for you. Hi, I'm new here. I bought a bunch of F330 for a peppercorn price at a liquidation sale. One SCSI cable lists for what I paid the the entire array. I figure that in the worst case I can always break and sell the memory sticks and cables. But curiosity gets to me, I'd like to bring at least one of these beasts up. I figured if I powered one up it would kick out a prompt on the console port. But it doesn't seem to. Is there a trick to do a cold reset and get the things to start over? Ditto....although we deal with just CIFS file access, we did some pretty intense testing when the system was installed and after any change to the configuration. After we moved to DP we didn't notice a significant change in performance. CIFS client slowness

We're experiencing severe latency when a Windows 2000pro or Windows XP client reads and writes to a folder on our Netapps (FAS960 w/ Data Ontap 6.5.1). It only seems to be client O/S as our testing w/ a Windows 2000 Server did not have latency on reads / writes. We're currently looking at SACK and TCP Window sizes. Has anyone experienced severe client latency? Any know issues / advice? Anyone changing the sack option on their Filers? Thanks! Related info below: ===================== SackOpts This parameter controls whether or not SACK (Selective Acknowledgement) support is enabled, as specified in RFC 2018. SACK is especially important for connections using large TCP Window sizes. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters SackOpts="1" (DWORD - boolean, recommended setting is 1. Double Parity on an Oracle Volume

Correction... we have both Ontap 6.4.2 and 6.5.1p1 running... both FAS960s have CIFS latency issues. And we have an open case w/ Netapp... Paul M. unable to log in

I have a new FAS960 and I am migrating all users and data from F740 to FAS960. I have the data moved and ready to change over. To test it I changed a test user account in the NIS maps to point to the new filer and location. When I try to log in using a UNIX box it just kicks me right back out almost as if it can't write to the home directory. - I have checked all of the options, usermap.cfg, passwd, quotas, exports, files and they are all identical and I can not see any discrepancies in the /etc directory between the two filers. - The options are all the same also. - In my NIS maps I can ypcat the auto.home and the test user account lists the correct filer and home directory. I just can not log in. Netgroup is correct. - I have cifs.trace_login turned on and I don't even see it attempting to log in. - My cifs shares are correct. - The filer is correctly in the domain (win2k) and also resolves using NIS. I can run a cifs testdc successfully and cifs domaininfo shows correct info - I can mount a share and home directory - I can map a share from win2k - when I telnet into another machine as the test user it maps to the new home directory correctly but when I try to touch a file it says it can not create the file, even as root. - qtree security is set to unix It is almost as if the volume is read only but it is not. I just do not know where to look now. I hope that I am just overlooking something simple. Burke

Is there any reason NOT to zero disks that you are leaving in the system as spares? They will have to be zeroed when you add them to a volume (or create a new one) anyway, thus delaying their availability in that volume for data. If they are chosen for reconstruct, they do not need to be zeroed ahead of time. But either way, the performance effect on the system of zeroing disks is negligible, so why not zero them all? I have few disks (now spares) that used to belong to a volume that was destroyed, however, I MUST zero out any data from these disks before they can leave our premises. We have our backups set to run over CIFS shares that have the vscan disabled. We can backup at faster speed and the filer is still protected. I may stand corrected, but I don't believe the part below is true. I don't believe the real-time settings on the Trend server have any bearing on which files are scanned. From what I see, it appears to me that the Netapp decides whether a file should be scanned or not, and then sends a specific manual "Please scan this file" request to the Trend server. Skip, Your VSCAN server is definitely the primary bottleneck as you have clearly identified. Although the fact you are using CIFS for your backup communication/share connection probably isn't helping either. For every single file that you backup, a vscan is being performed. Thus during these backup periods I would not be surprised if you see some of those VSCAN timeouts you found in the filer syslog/messages. As far as I understand it, the CIFS style backup will not utilize a snapshot for the backup like direct attach or NDMP will do. (Someone please set me straight with this if I am wrong!) I think you said you were using trendmicro as the scanning server. If you are try setting your realtime scan to "incoming" only. I think this should improve your backup speed somewhat as the backup file read requests will no longer require a VSCAN before the file is handed over to the backup client. The problem here is that you need to be sure that all of the content currently on your filer is virus free. Because from now on, only incoming files will be scanned. Its not ideal. Would be nice if you could exclude your backup client from virus scans during file open requests. I don't know of trendmicro offering this. The 1 Gb connection MAY help if you have identified the network as a bottleneck. Have you ruled out CPU maxxing on the AV box? No point increasing bandwidth to the server if the server can't handle any more requests. Your best option, as you have alluded to, is move away from CIFS to direct attach scsi or NDMP. I like NDMP and use it widely. However you may not have the necessary infrastructure. I don't know if Backup exec supports NDMP, so you may need to go to an enterprise version. Check the veritas site for this. In your case, direct attach might be better, as long as you have some tape drives to spare for this filer. As for compatibility of you tape drive, I would check the NOW site for the hardware compatibility lists with R200. Files Backed up: Incremental - 648,800 files, 300 GB Full - 2,340,000 files, 970 GB These aren't a large amount of files or quantity of data. However you may want to check the drive utilization for your raid groups on the R200 during the CIFS backup. Those babies aren't built for speed. Good luck, sounds like a fun upgrade.
