Simon, You should definitely set it to high on the command line to increase the speed of reconstruction. That is provided that your system is not being used very heavily. If there are lots of other disk traffic and you set it to high it will probably slows down the other activities. I did not know that filerview sets it to the inverse so that's good to know. `availtime full` is what you want. Unfortunately, on some DOT upgrades, the data gets reset. Would someone please refresh my memory as to the options for the availtime command (DOT 6.5.2)? It used to have an option for displaying the output on the console of the filer in a user-friendly format. This is much more useful to me than the cryptic data it normally returns. Uptime is great for telling you how long the filer has been up, but availtime can tell you how much uptime you have at a CIFS and NFS service level. I thought (as you mentioned) that setting it to 'high' would increase the reconstruct speed. I then used the filerview web interface to go in and change the raid reconstruct speed to 'high' and it actually set this value to 'low' - the web tool seems to set it to the inverse of what you'd expect. If you want to stay with UNIX, you can use the "smbcacls" program that is part of the Samba suite. That allows you to set Windows permissions from a UNIX client. I just downloaded the 6.5.1R1, since I'm running the Hitachi GF940. I went to the download page on the now site, and at the bottom of the list of software is a small section to enter the specific software you want. Good Luck!!! New Simplified Monitoring Tool

Hello Toasters. Some may have noticed my search for a simplified monitoring tool awhile back. Alas, I never found such a tool. So I finally broke down and just wrote my own. So far I've only got about 2 hours worth of developement into it, but it's mostly what I want already. I thought I'd see if anyone else was interested in it or could propose suggestions for it. It's called "Toasterview" (I wanted to call it ToasterVision, but that seemed to silly) and you can see an example output page here: http://www.cuddletech.com/code/toasterview/europa.html Some notes about this sample page. Firstly, the Head image you see at top does, you'll notice, match the model of the filer so you can "see" what the head looks like reguarless of which model it is; right now F7x0, F8x0, F940 and F9x60 are handled. We WERE running 6.5.1R1P12 - until NFS permanently stopped working on our FAS960c (cluster), caused by a bug involving DNS. My guess is that 6.5.1R1 was removed due to the many problems it had and replaced with the 6.5.2 offering. As I mentioned before, 6.5.2 is no bed of roses. So if you must go up, go for 6.5.2P6 to fix a couple of nasty problems. My experience with 6.5 says stick with 6.4 releases if you can. Unless you absolutely need the new features of 6.5. All the drives on the shelf disappeared from the system when it "wedged" so they were marked failed (or just missing). When I initially made the volumes, I organized raid groups such that there's only one drive from any given raid group on a shelf. So with 12 disks in a shelf and 7 shelves in the system (for example, on the R100) I have my raidgroup size set to 7 and make sure that when the volumes were created or expanded that the disks were added in groups of 7 by name, one from each shelf. I organized it that way exactly for this failure case - losing a whole shelf. When the drives disappeard there weren't enough spares to rebuild (until we powercycled the shelf) so most of the raid groups were running one disk short, but they didn't go offline since they only had one missing disk. Because the volumes didn't go offline, the disks couldn't be reassimilated into the system after the reboot because they were now out of date, so they all became spares. So basically the system has to rebuild one drive from each of the 12 raid groups on the system - two at a time. The netapp folks chalked it up to a bug and I updated them to 6.5.2. Luckily the systems are internally used so the downtime wasn't a huge deal. Not something I want to recur on a regular basis, and with data on the volumes it was a bit of a heart-stopper when it started happening. Lukcy for me I suppose there was no data lost. How did a shelf hang result in 10 failed drives? And how did you avoid a double disk failure with that many failures? We had a flakey ESH eliminate the secondary path to about 5 drives awhile ago, but Netapp said there was a way to fix it (involving downtime). We were lucky, 4 of them were on new vols, so we just destroyed the vols and reseated the drives, no downtime or rebuilds required. The logo image in the top right is, of course, intended to be changed to your company logo so that your boss is impressed. The global status box changes from green to red based on status. But, the most interesting and important part for me is the DF output. Using the DF SNMP table I can parse it up and display how I like, so I display volumes in nice round numbers (using 1024 insteal of 1000) for easy reading and a little bar graph that lets you see volume usage in an instant. Also, the last line of the DF table is a "Total" line. This simply adds up the data from all the non-snapshot volumes and displays this information like anything else. It's kinda nifty to be able to take 1 look and confidently say "We're using X% of! the filers capacity" rather than just approximating off the top of your head. Anyway, this is the kind of tool I want. I need to clean up the source so it's pretty and then I'll GPL it. Anyone interested or what to make suggestions? I should note that I'm actually supplimenting this page you see with extra data at the bottom as supplied by RRD graphs and such... however that stuff is all system specific whereas my current script as demostrated works on any NetApp Filer (I guess NetCache too). The colors and stuff need tweeking, but you get the general idea. benr.

I think 6.5.2P6 is the latest. If you can, go straight to it. Greetings Toasters. I've finally given up on searching and started writting the simplified monitoring app that I'd like. I thought a nifty feature would be to include an image of the head itself (stock photo of course) to spiff things up a bit. Does anyone know where I can find stock photos of the older filers? (740, 760, 840, etc) NetApp provides images of current filers http://www.netapp.com/news/pressroom/products/ but not the older ones. Thanx. benr.

NFS export from within a CIFS share

Had an interesting one today: We created a CIFS share called "public" to create a department wide storage area for a project we've got going on. A web developer was editing HTML in a subfolder there and wanted it published for users to view. So I NFS mounted it to a test (SUN) webserver exporting it on the filer as: /vol/sysvol0/public/html_files My Unix guy who config'd Apache on the test webserver created a local user "www" to run Apache. The filer complained when you hit the webpage generating reads of the "html_files" dir by Apache saying UID 80 NOT MAPPED. (UID 80 is the www users UID on the webserver). The filer was expecting CIFS users athentication of an NFS mount! So you can't NFS export CIFS share folders I found out...!!!??? I ended up creating a (mixed) qtree which is a CIFS share *and* NFS mount and all is fine.... I thought that was an interesting problem and thought I'd share it.... -Rob

The filer was looking for a Windows user named "www" so it could look up its SID and determine what permissions the UNIX user "www" were granted in the NTFS ACL. If you don't like mixed-mode qtrees, create a Windows user named "www" and give it the appropriate permissions in the NTFS ACL to do what it needs to do (read-only?). Anyone use ldap with their filer? I am switching from nis to ldap and was curious if anyone had tried it? I'm using the Sun One Directory server, but it shouldn't matter which LDAP server.
