We currently have a DLT tape library connected to our F760 using the onboard HVD. We're going to change this out with a newer LTO2 library. The newer library uses LVD, so we have an HVD/LVD converter box. We also only use dump scripts to do our backups. It sounds like this should be as easy as - power off F760 - disconnect DLT library - connect LTO2 library with HVD/LVD converter - power on F760 - modify scripts in case any SCSI IDs have change Are there things we're overlooking. BTW, I realize we should have bought an LVD card for the F760, but someone had already purchased the converter and right now we're not up against any windows. What I need to do, is to apply different user quotas to the same CIFS user accessing to differents directories (shares) inside the same qtree. You can apply tree quotas to a Qtree, then share out the Qtree as a CIFS share. NFS permissions

The File Access Management Guide says that I can use -anon=root on an exported path and users on any client will be able to access it. When I entered that parameter, I get an error that says, "UID in anon option is not a number". I need to be able to allow any user from any of 6 Unix machines the ability to access this NFS share. Converting Netcache to Filer

[Fwd: More than one Admin machine for Netapps ???]

Anyone got any ideas about this one? I have a need to write a script to create qtrees on a Netapps Server. I have a UNIX Bourne shell script which does the job, however I need to set up windows permissions on them, specifically administrator = Full Access everyone = Read Access The default permissions are not appropriate when looked at from a Windows environment, so ideally I'd like to rewrite the script (it's not rocket science) to run from a windows environment and for it to carry on and do cacls operations on the qtree created. We've got Services for UNIX installed and have installed the Unix Tools but when I try to do an rsh to the Netapps, I get "permission denied" and "can't establish connection" messages. Anyone know how I can get around this? Can I somehow specify a second admin machine which is allowed to rsh? At the moment, the admin machine is a UNIX box. Resetting Parameters

What's the command to "unset" all the parameters and have a filer come up as if running 'setup'? I have a filer I setup on site in the US that needs to be shipped to the UK. I'd like it to prompt for new values immediately rather than wait for several processes to timeout and have someone login and run 'setup' again. 6.5.2R1 and F85 with external shelf ?

Alfred, Yes, I'm looking for Disk to Disk to Tape solution. Currently, Veritas uses the R200 as a storage media for incremental backups. The full and Filer backup goes directly to tape since I don't have enough disk space to dump all the fulls to the R200. For the Filers, Veritas can't backup NDMP device to disk. So far from what I read, FalconStor has a pretty nice VLT solution. Currently, we are using Veritas DataCenter v4.5, on Solaris, and Quantum P6000/7000 library using SDLT. A lot of incremental backup are already going to the R200 but full and NDMP still goes to tape. Interested in something like a virtual tape solution that presents virtual tapes to Veritas and backup to the disk backend, R200. Also, if the virtual tape supports NDMP for the Filer backup that will be great. Appreciate any suggestions. We use a device from Data Domain (the DD200 Restorer) which appears to NetBackup as a tape device and can be used with the Filers via NDMP. The appliance uses a lot of the same ideas as OnTap (apparently one of the first engineers at Data Domain was a former NetApp engineer) in how they perform data compression. As an example, even though the physical specs of the box are ~3TB storage, we're seeing data availability of up to 20-25TB (we can maintain about 6 weeks worth of full and incremental backups of our GroupWise and Filer on this appliance). Data Domain also has a new upgrade which will do multi-site mirroring of DD200 data (much like SnapMirror) If anyone is interested in more info on the box and what we're seeing out of it, let me know. It depends on which version of ONTAP you are running. Before 6.5 you could destroy the volume from FilerView without first taking it offline. BE CAREFUL. There of course is the warning message. RE: OnTap 6.5.2/6.5.2P6/6.5.2R1 ?

Thanks - I generally run updates like this past the support folks to make sure I'm not digging a grave for myself before I jump on in - they recommended going to the latest 6.4 after updating the firmware to 4.3 before going to 6.5.2R1 - I probably need to wait until the WAFL updates are finished before doing the 6.4->6.5.2R1 update though. The nearstores are already on 6.5.2, so the update to 6.5.2R1 should be pretty boring... (at least I hope so) In the future I will probably keep a little more on top of keeping up with the GA releases as they come out to save pain when updating in the future (keep the version jumps to a minimum). It's just I also kind of subscribe to the "not-broke/dont-fix" philosophy as well. For example, I had a really old F880 in production which was running some ancient 6.0 version and had an uptime of some ridiculous uptime (~2 years) which I recently updated to 6.4.4R1 that I also needed to do in a couple of steps. Since it was a production box and not causing any issues I never updated it until finally a problem came up and support recommended (aka: insisted) I update it so they could better diagnose it. NDMP backup is the by far the best choice. You can ether use Veritas or IBM TSM. TSM has more advance features then NetBAckup, but it is more complicated to setup initially I would strongly encourage you consider new line of Cisco SAN switches (MDS). I think the it rather impressive .Among many advances, It will allow you to segregator backup in different fabric/VSAN. The Brocade 3200 is a solid box and I have used Brocade for about 7 years with almost no real problems. However, I have started using the QLogic 5200 recently due to its REALLY lower price and have not had any problems with it either. But the QLogic isn't on the compatibility matrix. I have also used the CISCO 9216, which I like better than Brocade but it is also pricey. Keep in mind that in this case, you are not doing FCP so the compatibility matrix for FCP does not directly apply. For the Windows 2003 box, I have used Emulex, QLogic, LSI and JNI (now AMCC) Host Bus Adapters (Fibre Channel NICs) and I really prefer the QLogic 2340 (or 2342 for a dual port). It is the only card I have used that NEVER had a problem. Skip, We are using Netbackup Datacenter, running on Solaris, with the Brocade Silkworm 3800 and Quantum P6000 and P7000 SDLT. All the HBAs on Windows server, connecting to another SAN, uses QLogic 24xx. The 3800 is use primarily for Filer backup since our QLogic switch was not certify with Netapp at the time. So far the QLogic, 3800, and Netbackup works great. You will need to the NDMP option with Netbackup to backup the Filer without using CIFS shares. NDMP will likely increase your backup performance. Heya Skip, hmm.. I have a setup similar to the one you're proposing, and I've found that there is a better option. In lieu of conitinuing to use veritas products, and building out a SAN, I would suggest changing your backup software vendor. www.bakbone.com <http://www.bakbone.com> 's netvault line is pretty impressive. Generally less expensive, full NDMP support, neat-o filer options. Topology wise, plug the backup tape unit directly to the R200. You can then use the netvault software running on the windows 2003 server to backup ALL your windows servers to the tape library through the R200 using NDMP (over GbE), plus you can significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to backup the R200. If people are dead set on using FC, definately get either Emulex or Qlogic Cards. I personally perfer Emulex. We have been backing this up using Cifs shares with Veritas backup exec, needles to say this has been a very painful and slow process. We are now looking into the idea of building a fiber SAN. Our Backup tape device is a Scalar 24 the drive is an IBM ULTRIUM-TD2, the server that will be running netback up is a windows 2003 server, and this along with the R200 will be plugged into the Fiber SAN. What I would like some advice on here is what type of fiber switch would you all recommend?
