DataOntap upgrade practice

One of the thing I liked alot about DataOntap upgrade used to be that you can do all your prep work, copy the files, run download and then schedule a down time sometime later to finish the upgrade. I just upgraded from 6.4.2P6 to 6.4.4R1 this Sun. I had opened a case to talk to a support engineer since the 6.4.4 upgrade document was kind of confusing. Then I told him that I was going to do the copy and download on Friday and then reboot on the scheduled down-time we had on Sun. The support engineer told me that this is no longer recommended - there are certain operations that might go to disk and the filer might panick. I ended up taking his advice, only to find out during the maintenance down-time we had that the upgrade had problem. The 32MB PCMCIA card's service diagnostic partition did not have enough space and filer gave very misleading info to suggest that the upgrade had failed. All this when you are "on the clock"... Ugh... Is this claim from the TSE correct? That there are some operations that might panick the filer if you do the download but did not reboot? When did this go into DataOntap? What operations will cause these problems? It is a very useful feature to have the ability to do the upgrade before-hand instead of having to do everything once the system is down and you are on the clock and everyone is breathing down your neck! FC8 (or FC7) Comm ports

Hi All! Does anyone know anything about the pinout or protocol of the "Comm 1" and "Comm 2" ports on the back on an FC8? (I'm assuming an FC7 has these too.) Or low-level technical documentation for the module these ports are part of? (This module is the one with the two Comm ports, an I2C port, alarm reset button, and fanfail and other LED's.) I have an FC8, will be getting more, plan to use them as JBODs without a filer head; so far this has been working out quite well. Considering the great utility and low street price of these older components, I'm actually surprised I haven't located any "Netapp Hackers" web site yet -- this list is the closest I've found. So far, the only thing I've been able to get these ports to do is fault the module (LED's all light up, alarm sounds, disk I/O still chugging away with no errors) by sending a Break on Comm 1. (Using a null modem cable connected to a linux laptop serial port running minicom; N81, baud rate doesn't seem to matter 'cause nothing ever comes back). Steve -- Stephen G. Cyclades Tricks

OK I went out and got myself a couple of Cyclades Terminal servers (asc32's) and love them. But I haven't figured out how to send a "Stop A" or "L1 A" on the Suns to them. Has anybody here got some tricks to do that on your Cyclades? I wrote their support about "ctl-alt-del" and they summarily told me it was NOT possible on a serial device. Thanks -Bob

Alan, I agree with your recommendations. However, I usually leave keep a couple of snapshots that were used for backs around for even quicker restores, instead of going to tape. I also use a naming pattern similar to NetApp and create a hidden share to the .snapshot directory as each volume has it's own. Thanks for the idea. My goal was to capture the snapshot subdirectory they way it was on that day. Specifying the snapshot I want to backup would be no different than selecting a different time to run the backups. iSCSI benchmarking is difficult due to all the various factors that play into it, just like NAS. I'm a UNIX only user, but I'd recommend the 3 best tools out there: 1) IOzone: http://iozone.org/ 2) Bonnie++: http://www.coker.com.au/bonnie++/ 3) PostMark: http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3022.html Bonnie++ is the best of the real quick and easy benchmarks around. IOZone is the best way to see whats really happening and where the sweet spot is, but more time consuming and confusing for the uninitiated. And PostMark is NetApp's own benchmark which does some interesting tests better representing the real world. If your using a software initiator make sure to carefully examine CPU and interupt activity on your system during the benchmarking session. benr. PS: Here is an example of Bonnie++. I ran this from my Linux desktop system (with X and 20 terms, etc running). I'm using JFS on an iSCSI LUN provided by an F840 with a single shelf of 36G drives. I'm using a Linux software initiator and using the public switched 100M ethernet that I use for everything else. This test used a 2G sample. It probably would not be that much different than keep 4 weeklies on line for a month.... One month back, keep 4 weeklies. Two months back, keep 8 weeklies. Etc... Scott, You need to be aware that LTO2 is not supported as standard in DOT and you require 6.3.1 or later & a configuration file to be loaded onto the filer.
