I am looking to partition an Overland Neo2000 to be shared by a NetApp(825) and a backup server (ARCserve r11 w/ NDMP license). When you use the LPO (library partitioning option) in the Neo it loses the capability to run in sequential more - each partition can only be used in random access mode. Does anyone know how NDMP/NAS communicates with libraries/changers when directly attached? Do they need to be sequential changing devices are do they also support random access tape changers? Mark, Way in the past we have had virus scanning issues and worked closely with Trend to fix them all up. The error's we use to get from that side were CIFS: Virus scanner [scanner] completed scan on [file] but original request was not found. We know quite a bit about that side of things, the ip addresses in the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx are clients workstations, The clients also have virus scanning enabled but another outsourcing company looks after the desktops. We have sent up packet traces and perfstat's today and hope they do find something. One of the ones I looked at in more details, after getting the user to log out and then terminating the session for her on the filer, it was still active, She logged back on and opened three apps, yet in open files under hyena she had outlook pst and xls's where she had not opened outlook or a file within excel, and there were multiple instances of these files roughly 150 or so. We currently have the following error messages being generated on two of our Filers. There is current a Bug ID for a similar error message but with the Request Type being 5 instead of 4. We have an open Sev 1 case with NetApp. Has anyone else experienced this particular issue and if so a suggested procedure to follow. Client issues relating from this problem have been anything from unable to map drives, workstations freezes, slowness to access files/folder/shares. This has been occurring for the past two days and there have been no filer changes done on the systems for many weeks. Hardware Filer head has had diags run on it which was 100% successful. I have had none, the ideal sizing of RAID Groups is 8-14 drives per group. This will optimize performance in a RAID4 configuration. If you are worried about a double disk failure you can convert the RAID TYPE to RAIDDP if you have the extra disk. I usually setup my filers with raidsize=7 having no more than 7 disks per volume. However, I would like create a raidsize=13 volume. The only risk i can glean from NOW is that rebuild time will increase and thus increase the chances of a second drive failure (during rebuild). Has anyone had any real world issues with using volumes of raidsize > 10 thanks, -Tavis

Hi Alan and Skip, This is just an "FYI" to eliminate any confusion. There has never been a version of SnapManager which supported the use of Exchange 5.5 on VLD. The first version of SnapManager for Exchange to support the use of Exchange 5.5 databases on NetApp LUNs is the most recent release, version 3.1. NetAppDrive is included with the SnapManager for Exchange 5.5 product. Its purpose is to maintain the CIFS drive letter mappings to the filer which Exchange uses as well as monitor the Exchange services. SnapDrive it different. It is a separate product and it is used for iSCSI and FCP LUN provisioning and management. Hope this helps. Tavis, Once we get raid groups above 10 or so then we start using the double disk parity. That way you have to lose 3 disks in a raid group before you have data loss. One of my filers (F740 running DataONTAP 6.3.3P3D1) has one RAID group with 12 data disks, one parity, one spare, currently over 90% full. We had a data disk fail just a couple of days ago. The message file says reconstruction took 1:13:35.71. We use nuview or another name for it is VFM. I setup a replication policy to replicate the DB and logs from the snapshot dir (most recent) and replicate this to the R200. If single mailbox restore can open up the DB then the DB has got to be good, so if I can replicate the DB and logs back to the FAS 250 point snap manager for exchange to the replicated DB then I'm thinking I should be able to mount the DB and get outlook access to it. I want to know if I can replicate the most recent snapshot of the DB and logs to my R200, and if a disaster were to hit could I copy this DB back to the FAS 250 and mount it? We use single mailbox recover version 2.11 to restore emails and inboxes. If point this product to the replicated exchange DB on the R200 It does work the product does read the DB and I can recover inboxes and emails. So I guess my question is a snapshot of a DB once moved off of a fAS250 to an R200 can it be remounted by snap manger for exchange once the DB is copied back to the FAS? If the sole purpose for purchasing the filer is for this 50gig exchange database, it is probably not easy to make a good business case. However, if the filer is part of a larger storage strategy for your organization, it should be much easier to build a convincing business case. I think that the real benefits of NAS/SAN come from the ability to consolidate individual server storage and centrally manage. Other benefits include reliability, strong product support (at least with NetApp) and a proven track-record etc <insert marketing jargon here> For example; If you already connect Windows CIFS (or any other protocol for that matter) on the FAS250 then you may have already proven that the FAS250 works in your environment and that it provided some consolidation/management benefits. You should be able to show that the system is reliable and the performance has met expectations (otherwise you wouldn't be considering it for an exchange DB). If you have used NetApp support, chances are that you had a good experience. Moving more storage services to the FAS250 over time is what this entry-level device was designed for .... expansion, future-proofing, or whatever you want to call it. This is because it can fairly easily become a disk shelf in a larger F9XX series system if you choose to expand to an enterprise or high-availability (aka clustered/mirrored) storage solution. If you do expand, you should be able to do so without significantly increasing the amount of time spent managing the filer(s). Whereas adding a separate RAID array for every server/service could lead to considerably more time spent setting up and maintaining. On the surface, less moving parts (aka RAID controllers, servers, vendors) results in a simpler environment. Hope this helps seed some ideas for you. You can create a iSCSI lun that is 50GB for now. When it fills up, you can grow it on the fly. You can instantaneously restore using SnapShot. You can also snapmirror it elsewhere for Disaster Recovery. If you get the Single Mailbox Restore option you can restore any single message from any mailbox in any snapshot. Any reason why you are on 5.0 as opposed to Data Protector 5.1? Data Protector 5.1 is the latest and has been out for a while. I've seen something like this when I first upgraded to Data Protector 5.1 and was trying to use NDMP backup. If I try to backup more than 1 object, it will finish the first object and then timeout. Go to /etc/opt/omni/datalists and look at the backup specification you have. Edit the file and remove the line "DYNAMIC 1 1". After that, the backup worked fine for me. parity drive rebuild causing ls hangs

Anyone ever experience really bad performance when rebuilding a parity disk? We had a parity disk fail on our FAS940 and when it was trying to rebuild the disk i/o util went to 100% (observed with sysstat). Reads and Writes did not appear high, but I don't think rebuild traffic effects those numbers. During this time, "ls" was taking between 30 and 60 seconds (unacceptable). We thought for sure this couldn't be normal, since we've had disks fail and rebuild many times. The difference this time is it was a parity disk, but I don't think that should make a difference other than taking a little longer to rebuild. New disk from Seagate : ST373307FC

Hello, I buyed a new disk from Seagate and I am trying to make it work on my F760, Ontap 6.4.5, with /etc/disk_fw from now.netapp.com. The disk is a ST373307FC with Seagate firmware, the netapp did not manage to update it.
