The ability to take spare disks from system to system used to be true but it broke a while ago. There is also the issue of the DS14 MK1 vs. MK2 shelf issue. The old drives that you have in DS14 MK1 system can not be inserted into DS14 MK2 shelves either. But that is progress. I think NetApp in general tries pretty hard to be backward compatible where they can. The new "Universal" keyed drives on the MK2 shelves can be inserted into MK1 shelves as well. Are you saying that you can zero a disk on a 6.5 system to be used in a 6.4 system? I will not work either with just a simple spares_zero command (which only zeros a spare). The problems is DataOntap will refuse to put the drives into the system. You have to completely rewrite the label on the drive. To do so requires that you reboot and drop into the maintenance menu and then pick the option to re-label the drive. Anyone know why this is the case? I can't think of a good reason for doing so. The rationale is suppose to be that once you upgraded the system to 6.5, you need to revert and do extra work to go back to running 6.4. But this is a pain when you maintain a large number of filers and have to now keep track of one other unnecessary thing. I think at a minimum NetApp should do a better job of proactively telling the sys admins so they don't get surprised at the last minute. If we know about these sort of things we can plan ahead and avoid the problems. A quick follow up to this mail. We are in the midst of isolating this fault and our target of suspicion is our AV box. Virus scanning on the filer was disabled for an extended period of time and the error messages did not appear. Trend has provided a hotfix for us which is being tested. Fellow toasters running Trend version, 5.61.0.1025, Engine version 7.100-1003 beware if you are experiencing similar symptoms and error messages. Volumes and 144GB drives

Folks, Just curious as we're probably getting new NetApp boxes with 144GB drives: How are people handling 144GB drives with the tradeoff of volume size, back up windows, parity drive, nested qtree limits, etc. I understand at DOT 7.x there will be a logical volume manager, but in the meantime, using a 3 disk raid group to get a managable volume size will be kind of costly in parity drives, but a 6-8 drive raid group is rather huge for backup and, last I knew, we couldn't have nested qtrees. You can do a Windows CIFS audit on the directory or share. 1. Using a Windows Admin account select the folder/share, Properties, Security, Advanced (on Security tab), Auditing. 2. Select Add. The User/Group will appear. Leave the 'Object Type' default. The 'Locations' is the Windows Domain where the user account is located. The 'Object Name' is the group or account you want to audit. Select the group "Everyone" for the 'Object Name' should audit every account to this folder/share. Click 'Ok'. 3. The Audit Object dialog should appear which allows you to select which entry to audit against. Typically, you want "Successful" for each of the events you want to audit. 4. Select 'Apply these auditing entries to objects and/or containers within this container only' if you want apply to any subdirectories. Depending on how many clients are accessing this location and the number of objects you are auditing, the log can get pretty big. You can use a script to save the log and rename for each day. Audit Logging?

We've got an F740 doing cifs and nfs, with 3 shelves and ~400GB on it. We've got a situation where some critical, sensitive, files were lost. Permissions all look good, so I suspect that one of the people with write access to that directory borked something up (one of them uses Windows briefcases to sync up some files - that could have gone haywire). Anyway, this has brought up the request to do some sort of auditing on this (and perhaps other) directories to record who created/edits/deletes files. Is this possible? With the standard software, or is there some other product we need to purchase? thanks! johnS

The last administrator setup our production database to use 2 X 13 disk raid groups. It worked ok for about 1.5 years. However, I recently was re-organizing and decided to be safer and went to 3 X 9 disk raid groups. Besides taking longer to rebuild, the performance during rebuild was a big issue to me - we were already pounding the disks very hard, with disk utilization going to over 90% utilization frequently. If a disk goes out during peak hours, performance could degrade very substantially and it is just a problem that I do not need. So take that into consideration as well. I am looking to partition an Overland Neo2000 to be shared by a NetApp(825) and a backup server (ARCserve r11 w/ NDMP license). When you use the LPO (library partitioning option) in the Neo it loses the capability to run in sequential more - each partition can only be used in random access mode. Does anyone know how NDMP/NAS communicates with libraries/changers when directly attached? Do they need to be sequential changing devices are do they also support random access tape changers? I have had none, the ideal sizing of RAID Groups is 8-14 drives per group. This will optimize performance in a RAID4 configuration. If you are worried about a double disk failure you can convert the RAID TYPE to RAIDDP if you have the extra disk. I usually setup my filers with raidsize=7 having no more than 7 disks per volume. However, I would like create a raidsize=13 volume. The only risk i can glean from NOW is that rebuild time will increase and thus increase the chances of a second drive failure (during rebuild). Has anyone had any real world issues with using volumes of raidsize > 10 thanks, -Tavis

Hi Alan and Skip, This is just an "FYI" to eliminate any confusion. There has never been a version of SnapManager which supported the use of Exchange 5.5 on VLD. The first version of SnapManager for Exchange to support the use of Exchange 5.5 databases on NetApp LUNs is the most recent release, version 3.1. NetAppDrive is included with the SnapManager for Exchange 5.5 product. Its purpose is to maintain the CIFS drive letter mappings to the filer which Exchange uses as well as monitor the Exchange services. SnapDrive it different. It is a separate product and it is used for iSCSI and FCP LUN provisioning and management. Hope this helps. Tavis, Once we get raid groups above 10 or so then we start using the double disk parity. That way you have to lose 3 disks in a raid group before you have data loss. No real issues, just if you are using vld's you'll need to convert them to lun's before you upgrade snapdrive. Also, make sure that you have all the SP and hotfixes installed as per the NetApp SnapDrive/SnapManager Documentation. One other issue is the licensing of the newer versions of SnapDrive & SnapManager. You'll have to consult your agreement to determine if you can upgrade. Also, these products are now licensed either on a per filer or per host basis. One of my filers (F740 running DataONTAP 6.3.3P3D1) has one RAID group with 12 data disks, one parity, one spare, currently over 90% full. We had a data disk fail just a couple of days ago. The message file says reconstruction took 1:13:35.71. Hi all I'm running snap manger for exchange version 1.1.1 and netapp drive same version on a windows 2000 box with exchange 5.5. Can I upgrade snap manger for exchange to version 3.6 and upgrade netapp drive as well? Any known issues with this? We use nuview or another name for it is VFM. I setup a replication policy to replicate the DB and logs from the snapshot dir (most recent) and replicate this to the R200. If single mailbox restore can open up the DB then the DB has got to be good, so if I can replicate the DB and logs back to the FAS 250 point snap manager for exchange to the replicated DB then I'm thinking I should be able to mount the DB and get outlook access to it. Hi Skip, Are you using SnapManager for Exchange? If so, then there is a new KB article on this topic which may be of interest. KB article 3990 is titled "Using SnapVault to Archive SnapManager for Exchange Backups Sets" and can be found on the NOW site.
