SMB signing and my F760 ...

Does anyone have any experience with SMB signing?? We recently applied a DEBUG version of DoT 6.5.3 to our F760 in order to take advantage of SMB signing - a feature that won't be available until a later release of DoT 7.x - which won't be available for the F760's. With the SMB signing turned on we are seeing a much higher load on the filer's CPUs. NetApp analyzed some Performance Data and say that the SMB signing module is adding a 30% load to our FILER CPUs. What would you think? Is SMB signing that CPU intensive or would you think it could be sloppy code?? The performance hit is soo drastic I really have a hard time believing it is anything but bad coding (or maybe a little of both). NetApp Support's solution was to turn off SMB signing. Of course they were not thinking at all when they said that - because why would anyone apply a DEBUG release of an OS whose only function was to add SMB signing if they did not need SMB signing???? Fortunately we have a new filer waiting for a data migration ... but I have serious concerns as to what this is going to do to my new filer. What does a 30% CPU load increase translate to on a FAS960?? ... 10% ... 15%?? How soon before I have to buy another FILER?? I don't want to drop this ... but NetApp doesn't want to pursue any resolution other than new hardware. Anyway ... does anyone have any comments / suggestions?? - Scott W.

experience with iSCSI from W2K3 servers?

Does anyone have feedback or gotchas about W2K3 accessing large iSCSI space on NetApp filers? With what hardware? HBA and/or software initiator? The catch with trunking is that a single host will not see performance gains, unless they are load balancing across 2 nics and the filer is load balancing in the exact same manner. (not likely, but it can occur as aaron notes) Generally, trunking is used for load aggregation to provide higher performance to a larger number of clients. If you are looking for higher throughput that about 100MB/s you should be talking with your Network Appliance SE about assisting in the configuration and design of the system. I then took two 10/100 cards on a server and bound them togther and enabled sharing on the ports for the switch too. I went from pushing about 10MB/sec from the server to 20MB/sec. As this is well below the theoretical maximum for two gige ports trunked together, 250MB/sec (125MB/sec each), the problem is that pushing so little data makes it hard to see how effectively the gige trunk works. So, to answer your original question, yes I have done it; but utilizing 10/100 cards doesn't do justice when testing performance on a gige device.

Why do 'some' people that reply to these emails not read them first?? Tim, if you bothered to read my origignal emails you would see that it is you that is ignorant by replying in that fashion. If you can't be more helpful why not refrain from answering? I maybe inexerienced as far as reusing NetApp FC disks in this fashion, but as per my previous emails you would have seen that I know enough with out the 100's of people telling me that they need to be low level formatted - see 1 st and subsequent emails. That's not the problem I've got that done but I can not format them ala Windows 512 sectors. See previous comments about diskpart & gdisk32, etc. As for the response sugesting using a different shelf, well that wouldn't be reusing the DS14 would it? It's something I may have to do, but before doing so I thought I'd ask to see if anyone could suggest a way of 'reusing' the DS14 shelves. Now, your point about disk manufactures utilities to format the disks is a bit more along the right lines, at least it addresses the question. The details about the mylex is helpful, I'll check that out. This is a copper card with two HSSDC connectors so depending on which style LRC's you have, you may need to do some optical to copper conversion. Now the LRC and the disk firmware were designed for NetApp, so you would still be better off with generic disk firmware and a shelf designed to be Windows compatible. Better yet, just put these DS14's back on a filer and run FCP. I was simply trying to help as I could tell from your previous posts that you were completely ignorant when it comes to fibre channel disk firmware, block size, formatting, RAID, etc. I was trying to provide a simple solution that you might understand. Your best option in my opinion would be using a 16 bay shelf with a hardware RAID module from the same manufacturer. I would use disks that have factory generic firmware and format them 512 bps. If you are set on using NetApp DS14's, then at least format the disks 512bps. Disk manufacturers provide free utilities and there are several expensive commercial sofftware options to accomplish this. Your hardware RAID options are limited. Netapp trunking - no performance gain

Has anyone gotten any performance gains from network interface trunking with a netapp? So far I haven't.... my suspicion is that I don't have the switch setup right. ----- More details: I'm trying to setup trunking on a netapp connected to a Cisco 3550 gigabit switch (OS vers.12 on the switch). The odd thing is that when I setup two gigabit lines trunked together from the netapp to the switch I saw no improvement in thoughtput compared to a single gigabit line. As a test I set up four 100Mbit interfaces trunked together from the netapp to the switch. Again, I see the same throughput as with a single 100Mbit interface alone - there was no gain in throughput from adding three more interfaces. (Measured by connecting a Sun to the switch with a gigabit interface). The trunking worked even before I set anything on the switch. The only thing I knew to do on the switch was put the interfaces in a channel group: switch> interface range GigabitEthernet1/0/17 - 18 switch> channel-group 1 mode on switch> end ...but still no change in throughput (this worked with sun trunking, and there I did see a gain in throughput). netapp> vif create multi romvif0 -b rr e4a e4b e4c e4d netstat and vif status both show roughly equal numbers of packets on all four interfaces; all four are definitely being used. -Chris Moll Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

I attached one of the shelves to a server using a Qlogic 2200 card and although Windows detected the drives correctly I couldn't partition them or anything - no specific error message just saying that it couldn't. What I'm wondering is: Should I use the Qlogic card facility to low level format them? Will that make them usable in Windows? Hi - For info, I generally set my root volumes to 15Gb overall with a 20% Snap reserve (12Gb FS and 3Gb snap) I heavily restrict access to the chosen few and exclude the 'noddy' administrators often found in Domain Admin groups :o) The remainder of the AGGR aggregate I set up as an 'admin' volume where I store install and other misc data away from the user data. From Johns comments, I think what had happened is I had rebooted the filer on the newroot flex vol and issued the command which succeeded because it had already set AGGR aggregate as root. I have another cluster pair I will be playing with and upgrading this weekend. I will check out my theories (we do not have the luxury of a test filer here) That aside, has anyone seen any problems with SID based quotas after upgrading ? It seems that some explicit entries in our /etc/quotas. file which are recognised when the volume is bought online seem to revert to the standard default quota over time. A small comment on the plan below. The command to set the root aggregate (step 4) gives an error: Filer1> aggr options aggr1 root aggr options: option 'root' can be modified only in maintenance mode This isn't a problem though since you just need to set the root volume. The root aggregate will change automatically upon reboot. And just a generally comment on the Netapp size "recommendation" for a flexible root vol. I've seen three different docs that discuss the size of the root vol. One suggested 30GB, two others said you should use something around 90GB. All those suggestions are patently insane. I keep 3 months works of root vol snapshots; the total size is somewhere around 300MB. A few gigs should easily be enough to handle most situations. Other articles such as Solution ID: kb5634 make the procedure sound simpler yet more vague: "1. From an Admin host that has access to both traditional vol0 and the new root volume copy the entire /etc directory over to the new volume. " This I can easily handle, but I want to be fairly certain that it will actually boot from the new root vol after doing "vol options root root". I also want to put boot files on the new aggr/root disks so I can boot from that shelf incase I need to replace my compactflash card. Would 'download' do the right thing and place the boot files on the new disk shelf as long as I have set "vol options root root"? Has anyone done something similar, and how large did you make your new root volume? NetApp webpages have widely varying examples varying from 14g to recommendations of 30g or 90g. Our /etc is only 0.25 gigs and I wouldn't expect coredumps to consume more disk space than the filer has memory, and if my filer decides to start coredumping frequently then I will be thinking about the disk space and expanding it, since I can.

Mike, this is indeed a potential issue. One option might be to use last modified dates in the beginning rather than access dates. Then you can look at the reports to see what the trend is and adjust the policies as necessary. You can also specify that specific user accounts, machine names, or IP addresses do not cause restores. This is the most common practice for things such as CIFS based backups or virus scanners. MacOS X / Windows NetApp sharing issues

I have a FAS960 and an R200 to deploy. One of the services to be provided is user file services. They will replace Windows servers, which also run MS's AFP services for Macs. The Mac users can currently share files fairly seamlessly with Windows users courtesy of (of all entities) Microsoft. <rant> Despite the decade or so that has passed since everyone stopped thinking it was cool and pretty much started agreeing that it was a bad idea :-), Mac files are still three-dimensional entities with "data forks" (files), and "resource forks" (Mac-specific "stuff"). <sigh> </rant> Apple file servers run a hierarchical file service that will store Mac files or flat files. (Duh.) Microsoft's AFP service also has a facility ("NTFS Streams") to handle the additional information, serve it up to Macs, and allow non-Macs to ignore it, while still presenting a single file image. Good enough. Based on sparse clues, I *think* that all Data ONTAP releases post-6.4 support NTFS Streams in the same way as Microsoft AFP. The Thursby products "DAVE" and "ADmitMac" are smart enough to notice that the NTFS Streams facility exists on the NetApp and make use of it, therefore files stored with these products vis CIFS appear as a single file on disk, and the Mac users still get their resource fork data back. Unfortunately,... Apple's CIFS client is not so bright. It's not smart enough to realize that NTFS Streams is present, or to do anything clever with it. Instead it stores a separate file for the resource fork, i.e.: ._resume.doc resume.doc It *is* smart enough to tag the "._" files as hidden in CIFS, but curious Windows users can see and manipulate them anyway. (We even tested with the yet-to-be-released rev of MacOS X, in case anyone is curious.) Worse, the creating Mac user leaves the "._" file "in use" until it drops the share or shuts down, so other Mac users can edit the corresponding file, but not save it with the same name. Other tests showed the opposite: two Macs with the same file open r/w, happily overwriting the same Office document in turn. ACK! Macs can't share with Macs! We tried Mac via NFS as well as an Xserve accessing via NFS and re-serving AFP to Macs. Both are worse, because the "._" files are then not marked as hidden in CIFS, so the Windows users see all of these junk files sorted to the top, before the "real" files. Finally, the question! What are we missing? Is it really this ugly to share between Macs and PCs on a NetApp? We really wanted to roll out this whole deployment server-side and relatively transparently; now we are looking at having to install ADmitMac on about 700 Macs. Hello; There is a utility we use (non GUI, but I'm mentioning it anyways as we've been so pleased with it) to modify ACLs. It is called "NTSec" and is from a company called "Pedestal" (http://www.pedestalsoftware.com/). Allows you to backup up ACLs from folder sets (very useful for restoring these setting should a user with too much privilege mess things up) and other things too. Also allows you to swap users, so will replace user A with user B for any individual access they may have... HSM and NetApp

What would you recommend for an HSM product for use with NetApp? I am interested in a product that will periodically scan my file systems on my filers and then, based on criteria that I establish, move those files to an R200. I would like for it to leave a link in place of the original file so that it can be retrieved should it be needed. I would like to be able to further refine the management such that once a file has been moved to the R200 for some period of time let me know to either archive it to tape/DVD/etc and then delete it from the R200 and remove the links.

Nuview is not in the data path, it merely manages the DFS links. When the Nuview server goes down, the links are still in place on the filer(s), and the data is still available. Thanks. Unfortunately our IT security department has mandated that a whole bunch of stuff be turned on under CIFS audit. This makes these logs mostly useless to us. Too much data. Cacls would work - been wanting to create a less dangerous substitute for ntfschown[1] for file ownership modifications. Still prefer to find a GUI utility for the other admins here. 1. A utility I downloaded from now.netapp. It works well if used properly and can cause a whole mess of trouble if not used properly.
