I recently picked up an F720 that had been off for over a year or two. The batteries were dead but it was still bootable but would complain. Fun part was I zeroed the disks and went through the ontapp install just fine and upon reboot it would shut itself down after spitting out nvram warning messages and there is no way to override this in 6.5.x so off to buy batteries I went. Everything works fine now that new batteries are in. Hi, i just tried to power up an f840 , it freeze approx 45 sec after the powerup , i tried to remove all cards , and replugged the ram but it still freeze exactly after 45 sec . it look like some "timer" freeze it after N sec . maybe the watchdog ?? any ideas ? thanks cb

3 of the most commonly asked questions about Piano Tuning are: 1) How often should I have my piano tuned? The two main factors that drive a piano out of tune are weather change and how much the piano is played, but the age of the piano has an effect also. Pianos newer than 5 years go out of tune much faster than older pianos and may need to be tuned as much as 4 times a year for the first few years. Pianos older than 30 years may not have such great action or tone, but often hold their tune very well. If you practice more than an hour a day, you'll probably need to have it tuned at least twice a year to keep it sounding good. I would say that unless your piano is just another piece of furniture, you should have it tuned at least once a year. If it's used every day, twice a year will keep your piano sounding good anytime you or a guest sits down to play it. If you are a vocalist, string player, or that rare pianist with a very sensitive ear, 3-4 times a year will keep it at concert pitch at all times. 2) My piano isn't being used. Do I still need to have it tuned? Although it might seem unnecessary, it's important to keep a piano at least close to concert pitch, even if it's not being used. When your piano is in tune, a combined string tension of about 20 tons is exerted on the piano's structure. As the piano goes out of tune, the tension of the strings changes to varying degrees in different parts of the piano. If the tension becomes too uneven from one section to another, undue stress is exerted on the piano's frame. Also, a piano is much more difficult, and sometimes impossible to tune well after a period of neglect. For these reasons every piano should be tuned at least annually. 3) How much is it going to cost me to tune my piano? Many people ask me this question in hopes of getting a rough estimate of what they would expect to pay for a professional piano tuning. "Pay what you can afford" is my motto. I care more about getting your valuable musical instrument in tune than I do the money. I've found that tuners charge between $75 & $120 here in the Los Angeles area, my average is about $100.00. I would ask that you at least cover my travel expenses with gas prices the way they are. You will not insult me by paying less than the going rate. I have so much fun tuning pianos, meeting and talking to you that it makes it all worth while. 760 SCSI port hung

I had to unplug my SCSI cable from the onboard port in one of my 760's... I powered off the tape drive at the opposite end of the cable before unplugging and replugging the cable. Made sure twice I didn't bend pins etc. Unfortunately, the attached drive seems no longer to work, trying to access it gives me syslog entries like: netapp1: scsi.cmd.pastTimeToLive:error]: Device 0b.4: request failed after retry #0: cdb 0x00. In anyone's experience, is this likely a hung port, that a reboot is likely to clear? Or does this sound more like a hardware issue (bullet hole in foot)? Just like with SCSI devices on any other system, if you change, power cycle or unplug any target on a SCSI bus you will need to rescan the SCSI bus again. In this case, I believe the only way to achieve this on a filer is to reboot the appliance, and the rescan will occur on boot. Once rebooted (assuming everything is connected OK and configured) you will be able to see the devices again. 6.4->6.5: exports changes?

We need to consider upgrading Ontap from 6.4.5 to 6.5.x (where "x" is the latest GA at upgrade time). We might consider moving to 7.x . We have fairly extensive NFS "exports" files, several entries of which have a mix of "ro" and "rw" clauses. I have some sort of recollection that the 6.4->6.5 upgrade has some sort of interaction with (requires some change to?) the exports file. If so, are there any recommendations, gotchas, etc. for handling this transition. (The systems are a live clustered pair; downtime must be kept to a minimum; the transition must be smooth, predictable and reliable.) Would migrating directly to 7.x be any different? Daniel, You might want to consider using SnapVault and Open Systems Snap Vault agent for Windows in addition to the other option of using NDMP Windows Java client to do the migration. http://netapp.com/products/software/snapvault.html http://now.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/software We have used NDMP Windows 2K Java client running, of course, on a W2K AS server to migrate around 1 TB of data from a F760 to a FAS250 with no problem. This requires scripting and batch file to automate the procedure. Snapshots are not migrated in this manner. There is a minimum Data ONTAP version requirement related to either inclusion or version of NDMP server needed I recall. If you can work with your Net App Sales account execution, you might be able to get a temporary SnapVault license and the OSSV agent for Windows to carry out data migration from Windows 2K servers to a Net App filer/near-store unit. We have used OSSV in different occasion to migrate/consolidate from half to 1+ TB of data each time from DAS (direct attached storage) in W2K AS servers to a different R200 each time with no problem. windows data migration tool(s)

Hi, We are currently undergoing a large migration to netapp filers across the company and our windows IS team has hit some snags. Basically they have a number of various standalone arrays and need to transfer large amounts of files/data to the new netapp volumes but their manual copy methods have always failed especially when encountering corrupt files that may be in various users directories. Is there a windows NDMP client or similar they could use to directly transfer files to the filer without going through the smb/cifs layer? Forgive me if its obvious, I live on the Unix side of the house :) Thanks in advance

It's a real pain not having a spare filer to test things on ... I was hoping that all the quota-related nasties (153377, 154530) were well and truely fixed now and that I wouild be able to upgrade from 6.5.4 to 7.0.1R1(maybe P<something>) later this month. But then this appears on NOW: Bug ID 155441 Title: cp -p, chown, chgrp may erroneously fail due to "Disk quota exceeded" Description: If the default user or group quota for a volume or qtree is set lower than the size of the file whose permissions are being set, the command will fail due to an incorrect assertion that it would put the user over quota. This problem does not manifest when the command is executed by root. I am assuming that this is Yet Another Bug new in ONTAP 7.x, as AFAIK we have never seen the effect, and it seems to me we would surely be liable to. Specifically, we have a zero default quota in our /home qtree: * user@/home 0 0 101 user@/home 80M 8000 102 user@/home 210M 8000 ... specifically intended to lock out unallocated uids, special uids that aren't meant to be using /home, cancelled accounts, and so on. We're using NDMP to backup from a nearstore device. Our legato software was / is having problems when backing up the volumes that I have CIFS stuff on. Legato would time out and not complete a full. Legato did not have problems doing an incremental on those volumes. Turns out our problem was a timeout on catalogue creation. Legato would pause for a good hour before starting to transfer data to tape. The problem got worse when we added more and more users to the volume. We had to modify the time out values in legato to allow it to finish creating the catalogue. As far as I know legato still behaves this way. I don't have current figures on how long legato is now taking to create the catalogue currently. We finally tracked this down to the thousands of small files that our windows users keep in their home folders. Our UNIX files take up more room but they are fewer and bigger than the windows files so we don't have the legato issue on the volume we use for NFS. Backups seem to perform reasonably well when we are not getting a table of contents. Since we need a table of contents for individual file restores it is must to have this. F840 reboot from watchdog reset

Using ontap 6.4.5 with 1 ds14 over copper fc Last night one of our F840's rebooted itself twice via "watchdog reset". Either before or after the second reboot notification mail was sent the filer froze up with the front LCD panel stuck at some NFS ops/sec number. After a hard reboot it came up fine. I disabled the watchdog timer and the machine stayed up. Has anyone experienced multiple watchdog timer resets or knows what type of hardware failure they watch? Also, how bad is it to keep the watchdog turned off? Thanks, Tavis

Hi all, The theory of operation of a watchdog card is a counter that the unit has to reset at regular intervals. In case the counter reaches the maximum value because ONTAP has not reset the counter, the watchdog will reboot the unit. I'm talking off the top of my head, I'm sure someone could point out what the exact behaviour of the watchdog card is. In other words, the unit crashed and become unresponsive and the watchdog rebooted the unit. Disabling the watchdog will not reboot the unit and will leave the head of the filer just crashed, so the filer will stop servicing files until manual intervention is done (power cycle). In my opinion, it would be better to have the watchdog activated and investigate why the unit crashed. If the unit is rebooted because of the watchdog several times, maybe there could be a bug in that particular version of ONTAP (check NOW for possible bugs). To investigate the failure, look at the log messages before the crash in the autosupport, that may help troubleshooting the issue. Either before or after the second reboot notification mail was sent the filer froze up with the front LCD panel stuck at some NFS ops/sec number. After a hard reboot it came up fine. I disabled the watchdog timer and the machine stayed up. Has anyone experienced multiple watchdog timer resets or knows what type of hardware failure they watch? Also, how bad is it to keep the watchdog turned off? Thanks, Tavis
