With some help from members of the list who identified the card as an Intel Pro/1000 T Gigabit Ethernet card, I was able to procure one of these from our IT storage. Has anyone here run any benchmark tests on file creation (large number of small files) similar to Postmark ? Are there any measurements from a real world web server kind of environment where a large number of small files are created continuously under heavy load ? SSH access - restricting commands?

Hi all, I'm running 7.0.1R1 on some filers and we need to give access to users to create qtrees. I've written a perl script wrapper around rsh (to be setuid unfortunately), but I was hoping that I could use SSH instead fot access control, especially if I could limit access to just a single command string or two from the client tool Has anyone else up SSH non-password access to just a specific command? The user's should NOT be able to login to the NetApp otherwise, they should only be able to do a limited and sanitized version of 'qtree create /vol/<volume>/<qtree> on the filer(s) we have deployed. Looking on now, I really don't see much explanation of how filer:/vol/root/etc/sshd/... is supposed to help me here with this issue, since I can't find a man page or docs on how to configure the SSHD on the Filter. Michael, In version 5.3 you can create virtual mappings and backup at the Qtree level that way. Not particularly helpful when you're using version 5.2 I know, but perhaps a move to 5.3 is in order? Hi, we (try to) backup our filers 940c(6.5.2R1) with ndmp and IBM Tivoli (TSM) 5.2<Solaris>. We have various Problems. The greatest Volume we backup is a ntfs-Volume with 1TB and several qtrees.At the moment we backup the whole Volume.Performance is very bad (not only on great Volumes, same Perf.-Problem with small volumes AND direct attached to a device AND using the dump-command!!)So we wanted to spread the backup, but my Backup-Admin says TSM cannot backup qtrees???? Is anybody out there who has GOOD experience with TSM 5.2 and ndmp? A new request in my company is to backup 7TB, is there a chance to realise this with ndmp. (NearStore is not yet a alternative). Gee, 30,000 * 300 is not even 10 million entries! :-) Yes, you are right that this isn't going to work in every case. But I wanted to mention it because it is useful in some situations. As to the MultiStore comment I made, I was thinking of a case where you want to use the same physical filer to serve an unprotected network (such as your normal campus network, it sounds like) and also serve a trusted network (on a different NIC or VLAN, say). As long as there is no way to access a vfiler's IP address using a client on the untrusted network, the vfiler boundary checks will prevent all access from all protocols (including NFS handle spoofing) coming from those untrusted clients. F825 scsi transport errors

I am seeing a bunch of these errors in my messages file Wed Jun 15 15:42:35 EST [scsi.cmd.transportError:error]: Device 8a.29: Transport error during execution of command: HA status 0x9: cdb 0x28:07819108:0008. Wed Jun 15 15:42:35 EST [scsi.cmd.retrySuccess:info]: Device 8a.29: request successful after retry #1: cdb 0x28:07819108:0008. The device 8a.29 is a 72G FC hard drive in a DS-14 Shelf(not MK2), it is not the only device that is seeing this error, a few other hard drives are also reporting this error. All the drives reporting the error are in the same shelf. I have 2 shelves on this filer and they are connected to one dual channel FC card in a redundant loop fashion. If you look at 8a.17, it has about 1200 Loss of sync count on it. I am not sure why the filer has not started using "8b.17" instead(and that I will know that this might be a cable problem or port on card problem) If the problems continue with 8b.17, that would be indicative of a problem with the hard drive electrical contacts or the shelf. Any thoughts ? questions about Snapmirroring LUNs

I'm going through the Online Backup and Recovery Guide, and trying to grok the ins and outs of SnapMirror and LUNs. I have a purely procedural question: If I have a source volume full o' LUNs, do I have to define the LUNs on the destination filer, or will the LUNs and their structure "appear" once the mirror is up. They are essentially files, so I would think the latter, but that's a guess. Once they do appear (or are populated), can I map them to a FC or iSCSI service on the destination filer (albeit read/only)? I also have a utility question: If the LUNs are used for file systems as opposed to database, then the NetApp isn't going to understand the internal structure of that file system, so any given mirrored file-system-in-a-LUN is essentially not synced, and therefore in a "crash-compatible" state, right? And if backed up via NDMP, it would just be a "data blob", right? Is there a product or a feature that will get the NetApp to look inside that LUN, and recognize and deal smartly with, say, a NTFS file system inside of the LUN? Hi, Since installing ONTAP 7.0.1R1 I've been receiving 1MB "PERFORMANCE DATA" emails from the filer, along with the weekly system notification. The email consists of hourly stats and is cryptic at best. Is there a setting to stop these emails from being sent to the "autosupport.to" list? (which is what I assume is happening.) -C.

from the man pages autosupport.local.nht_data.enable Enables/disables the NetApp Health Trigger (NHT) data autosupport to be sent to the recipients listed in autosupport.to. NHT data is the binary, internal log data from each disk drive, and in general, is not parsable by other than Network Appliance. There is no customer data in the NHT attachments. I haven't seen the data yet but I'm willing to bet that it's the same type of performance data that comes out of DFM. I'm running 7.0 and will upgrade to 7.0.1R1 soon. I use a script to pluck CPU, network and volume info out of DFM and put it into a MySQL database. I then use PHP to generate graphs based on that data. If the format is something like this: 1118612700 2.3 Then it's Epoch time and a value. In this case, it's my CPU utilization. You just need to know what type of values they are (CPU, network, etc.). PHP has built in Epoch time conversion support and it works great with MySQL. Not to mention there's plenty of free charting tools for PHP out there. I only wish DFM had more exportable values. Any chance NetApp would start capturing SNMP values in DFM? Sorry to get off topic. I agree with John on the notification emails though. Good Luck, John T. Or maybe filter them out on the outgoing email gateway, so that they get dropped into the bit bucket when going out. I'm sure you could setup a sendmail filter to process these things before you send them off site. I'm planning on putting a procmail recipe in place so I don't have to see these stats directly, but to keep them logged for posterity. But I'd love to be able to drop them into MRTG or some other tool so I can examine them. Maybe when I get some time I'll bug NetApp about how to look at this data, and possibly how to manage it better. Sorry I don't have a real answer here. Hi , i disagree on this point , i have another 840 it does not have this problem it go by its post check (sensor , watchog , pci scan , memory test , load os) and then it stop and scream : Charging battery dont move ... press control C to abort the charger . Then it resume the boot , once the battery is full . but this 840 simply "freeze" somewhere between pci scan and memory test , nothing else . is it a normal ? F720 2 X2030B error

I put a second copper fibre controller in slot 1 of my F720, slot 8 has the other controller. Slot assignments were looked up on now.netapp.com It gives an error during boot about 2 instances of this card but it does work and see all drives etc. I didn't see anything on NOW that indicated this was an issue or what am I missing here?

About eight years ago when we first set up a filer for a home directory service we knew that we were going to have 25K - 30K accounts, so we split up our home directory tree using the first two letters in the user name. For example, our home directory root is /vol/vol0/h1 so my "scl" home directory is: /vol/vol0/h1/s/sc/scl Eight years ago "options cifs.home_dir" only allowed you to specify one directory for CIFS to find home directories. We therefore set up a directory of symbolic links, one for each user, like this: /vol/vol0/home/shares/scl -> /vol/vol0/h1/s/sc/scl and did this: options cifs.home_dir /vol/vol0/home/shares This has been working just fine. I see that ONTAP 7.0.1 uses the file /etc/cifs_homdir.cfg to list the directories that contain CIFS home directories and you can list up to 1000. All of our user names begin with two lower case letters, so we have 26 * 26 = 676 directories. So we could list /vol/vol0/h1/a/aa thru /vol/vol0/h1/z/zz in cifs_homdir.cfg . It occurs to me that a sequential scan of so many directories to find a particular home directory could be costly. It might be smarter for us to just list our one big directory of symbolic links. I know that WAFL uses hashed directories, so finding an entry, even in a large directory, is fast. However, ONTAP might build some sort of look up table keyed by user name to avoid sequentially searching a large list of directories. If this is true, then ONTAP would probably construct this lookup table even if we list just one big directory of symbolic links. If the single big directory has no advantage, then we might as well abandon it. Can anyone at netapp offer a recommendation here? How long was it unplugged? The NV-RAM battery might be dead, which will cause you problem on booting up. However, usually you will see message on console.
