There is a bug in a few version of DOT 6 which causes this. I know it's persent in 6.5.2R1 but it's fixed in later versions of 6. We're running a FAS 960 with DOT 6.xx (that last current version of 6). Have noticed that the CPU usage stats are not being displayed in DFM also the CPU usage stats are not showing up in Filer at a glance. Looks like we stopped getting stats about two weeks ago. CIFS, NFS and network use stats are still coming in properly. The DFM client software seems to have current CPU usage stats though. Anyone have an idea about how to get CPU usage to show up again? OnTap 7 and Samba

Greetings, I am having some difficulties accessing our filers with OnTap 7 via Linux. Perhaps someone in this list could point me in the right direction. The version of Linux is Open Enterprise Server (minimal install) which makes it functionally equivalent to SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 SP1. It is running Kernel 2.6.5-155-smp and Samba 3.0.14a (originally 3.0.9 but updated when issues surfaced). The filers I have tried accessing consist of FAS270s and a R200. They are using FlexVols and OnTap 7. Data shares are available via CIFS and NFS and are configured with NTFS Security Mode. The filers are members of an Active Directory Domain (Windows Server 2003 PDC). I have a number of odd issues that have surfaced. Issue 1; -------- smbmount returns permission denied and odd path presentation. The Linux box is a member of the active directory domain. I can use wbinfo to list domain users and groups, as well as getent passwd and group. I am able to authenticate via kerberos, and can use smbmount against Windows server shares fine. However, when I attempt to mount a share on a NetApp filer using mount -t smbfs -o username=someuser,workgroup=THEDOMAIN //NETAPP/SHARE /mnt/SHARE the operation appears to complete successfully. If I enter mount I can see the /mnt/SHARE as active. If I travese into the /mnt/SHARE folder and type ls I get a permission denied error. Syslog shows kernel: smb_lookup: find /// failed, error=-13. After some digging it appears that error=-13 is an EACCESS authentication issue. So I assumed I did not have permissions. If I type ls -alFG from the /mnt folder in Linux there is no /mnt/SHARE directory. If I type ls there is one, and if I unmount /mnt/SHARE then type ls -alFG the directory is there. In further troubleshooting I can browse the share from Windows, and from the same Linux workstation smbclient //NETAPP/SHARE -U someuser -W THEDOMAIN allows me to browse succesfully. Issue 2; -------- /bin/ls: reading directory .: Cannot allocate memory If I mount the same share via cifs (mount -t cifs -o user=someuser,domain=THEDOMAIN //NETAPP/SHARE /mnt/SHARE) the operation completes with no error. If I cd into /mnt/SHARE then type ls I get the error above (/bin/ls: reading directory .: Cannot allocate memory). If I continue to type ls it will eventually display the directory. If I cd into a subfolder the error returns. Both of these operations work fine against a Windows 2003 Server share. Does anyone have any ideas? The messages file on the filer itself does not provide any significant error messages. Thank you very much for any information anyone can provide. NetApp F740

Hi - hoping someone can help me with a disk problem with the above filer. Been running an F740 with NetApp Release 5.3.6R2 installed. The filer is out of warranty / cover but the filer has been with me since new so the O/S was the latest I could get at the time & the licenses for NFS / CIFS tie up. A drive failed several months ago but this was no problem as the host spare got used. The failed drive is a Seagate Cheetah ST336704FC HH. Some time later I installed a new drive we had, but this drive wasn't supported & the filer stated this and caused a reboot of the filer. No problem I thought and simply left the bay empty. So the filer is running just fine. Just with no hot spare. The output of sysconfig (-v) gave me: slot 1: Fibre Channel Host Adapter 1 6 Disks: 207.0GB 1 shelf with VEM 1: NETAPP X225_ST336704FC NA41 Size=34.5GB (71687369 blocks) 0: SEAGATE ST136403FC NA13 Size=34.5GB (71132960 blocks) 4: NETAPP X225_ST336704FC NA42 Size=34.5GB (71687369 blocks) 5: NETAPP X225_ST336704FC NA42 Size=34.5GB (71687369 blocks) 2: SEAGATE ST136403FC NA13 Size=34.5GB (71132960 blocks) 3: SEAGATE ST136403FC NA13 Size=34.5GB (71132960 blocks) Shelf 0: VEM Kernel Version : 2.5 App. Version : 3.1 *Note* "6:" or drive 1.6 is not shown, this is the failed / removed disk. From the output above I assumed (1st mistake) that the drives in the filer must be either Seagate ST336704FC or ST136403FC. And got hold of a few ST136403FC (Full Height) second hand and attempted to replace a disk again, using the following process from the command line: disk_swap <insert new disk> vol status -r All looked good the scan for shelves / disks completed without error and all the drive lights are on. But vol status -r OR sysconfig -v does not show the new disk? Tried the same again but this time simply removed & replaced the new drive. Still the same, no new disk being shown. The only other command I could think of using was shelfchk which when run asks "Are these LEDs all ON now" and yes they are, even the new disk? But I cannot access the new disk. So my question is does anyone know if the disks Seagate Cheetah ST136403FC are compatible with an F740 and if so what am I doing wrong when trying to replace a failed disk. Thanks - Julian. Windows Vista and OnTap

Hello, Has anyone tried to access a Filer from Longhorn Beta 1 aka Windows Vista? We tried it in our Lab (Win 2K3 Domain) and it looks as if the Kerberos authentication is not working. The filers are running 7.0.0.1RxPy and 7.1RC1. A Longhorn workstation which is not part of a domain can access a filer using NTLM auth. A Longhorn client which is a member of the same domain tries to use Kerberos Authentication and fails to access the filer with an "unexpected network error". The Longhorn workstation is able to access other Windows 2003 and Windows 2000 servers. Other XP clients can access the filer using Kerberos authentication without any problems. But I'm glad to see that the NetApp does not panic when accessed by the Longhorn Beta 1. I remember the first time we tried to access a Filer using the Windows 2000 Beta - the filer crashed at the moment the client tried to open a share. Has anyone else seen the same problem? Or even better, is it working anywhere? Carsten

We did not open a case for NFS, but we did for the CIFS and Samba issues. I will open a ticket for NFS with NTFS Security mode. I am wondering if it would just be easier to run Mixed mode though. I can't really identify a downside to mixed mode. The open ticket for CIFS and Samba issues has been responded to. A NetApp support agent said that mount -t cifs issues could be a bug in OnTap 7, and they will begin evaluating our findings in a testing lab. As far as mount -t smbfs (Samba), the official line is that Samba is not supported and I will have to inquire with the Samba mailing list (which I have done). Of course Samba pins the issue back at NetApp. So is there an unofficial line I can try ;). EOA gear

Our parent company has a old netapp (F840) that they are lending to us for a 2-month critical project. Unfortunately the machine is out of maintenance. It has old X219F, X221D, X225B, X233A and X234B drives. I saw on NOW that these are all pretty much EOA drives. X219F is even End of Hardware Support. Does that mean basically you can't get them from NetApp at all? For the other drives, we are checking to see if we can get support for them. Although for 2 month, maybe we are better off just purchasing them from support? Is that something that we can readily do? What kind of turn-around can we expect? Anyone else been through this before? Derek

Fernan, See here: http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3343.html Of particular interest is the statement: "LDAP on the filers is designed to map user credentials to UNIX® UID/GID pairs for NFS via the RFC2307 schema extensions and does not apply to the CIFS authentication and authorization process. Thus, it is not possible as of this writing to directly integrate the filer into eDirectory environments using LDAP alone." For older versions of Netware you have a few options: 1) Install a Windows PC as a domain controller and synchronise it using either the Novell or Microsoft directory synchronization tools. Then integrate the filer with the Windows domain. Your workstations will require the Microsoft networking redirector re-enabled if it was disabled during the Netware client installation. There are issues with this approach that mean that users should do any password changes at end of day (sync lag preventing logon for a period after password change). 2) Use a Netware server as a gateway - you can do NFS mounts from the filer to the Netware box which then servers the data to the workstations. However, the problem with this is that you're not gaining the wide sharing I/O capability of the NetApp box (workstation I/O will be bottlenecked at the Netware server). 3) Mount iSCSI volumes from the filer on the Netware box. Again like option 2, you are limited to the I/O capability of the Netware server. You need a Netware iSCSI initiator for this to work (I don't know if this is available for 5.11, it is for 6.x versions) The directory sync option is the only way to gain the server consolidation and performance benefits of the NetApp box, but it's messy to configure and maintain. Temperature sensor on Shelf

I have a misbehaving temperature sensor on my one of my shelves which is causing the shelf to claim to be at 53 C and then drop down to 26C every other minute. All of this activity generates a lot of autosupport emails. Anyone got any ideas on 1. How to disable this temperature probe fow now 2. Does the filer shut off if the temperature hits some number. This probe is generating faults every minute, and I dont want to shut autosupport off completely, but even at minimal, this generates about 100K. Annoying. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Do you have ESH-Modules in your shelfs??? We had a similar problem with one. It showed suddenly no temperature. Only way to fix it was to exchange it. OK...I'm probably being thick but why didn't snapmirror work for you? Inode counts from df wrong in ONTAP 7

I've got a case open with Netapp about the following, but it's making slow progress. I would welcome reports that other people can see the problem as well. The scenario is NFS v3 mounts where the mount point is within a qtree, with both a block and inode quota set for it, and what the client sees when doing df(1) (at a lower level, statvfs(2), or lower still, the NFSPROC3_FSSTAT rpc to the filer) on it. Before upgrading to ONTAP 7.x both blocks and inodes used/available/total were taken from the qtree quota information. Now, running 7.0.1R1P2, the blocks info are still like that, but the inodes info comes from the data for the whole volume. I had an experience with God in Sept 2003, I was down Pittsburgh, finishing up a day of work at Cargenie Mellon as I was working as a computer consultant for the Career Center. It was a pretty cool job. I'd write some software, modify hardware, or just do some light work such as deliver mail. I felt pretty much complete, after having a long hard time in school. To finally be working was a great feeling. I decided to go out for Sushi. At the Sushi place, I was seated in front of an Aquarium where a single fish swam. I thought on the situation that there was a specimen of beauty in front of me, yet I'm going to be eating fish soon. There was music playing which I think was Japanese. I finished my food and tipped the waitress. Before I left, I wished a Bob Marley song would play. The next song on the radio was a Bob Marley song. I thought that was pretty cool. So I left, and was walking back to work to check in and see if anyone needed anything. While I was walking over a bridge, I heard God say to me,"Good News". It was like a whisper, but it came with authority. I had to understand what it meant. I felt compelled to go straight to my car and drive. When I was driving I felt as if I should go towards home, and while I was driving, I felt unable to turn my eyes to look at billboards or be distracted from the road. I had an effect similar to tunnel vision where everything but what was necessary for driving was being filtered out. Eventually I passed my old church that I went to when I was young. My dad was there doing maintaince on the graveyard. I felt this is where I needed to go. I stepped inside the church and my dad and I talked. We held hands while talking and our arms were trembling. I don't think I mentioned being told the,"Good News". He went upstairs and brought down a Good News bible for me. I don't claim to be a prophet,but I fully know God exists as explained in the bible. I'm well educated, and I appreciate science. But neither science, nor other religions detract from the bible. If you read the bible, you'll find truth. If you still have time to read on, I'll explain one of many ways on how you can discern the bible as truth. The bible has prophesy. No person or belief system has predicted the future like the bible has, they have all proven to be fakes. A) In 700BC the prophet Isaiah predicted the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem by Cyrus. Isaiah 44:28 At the time, the temple was not even destroyed. Later the temple is destroyed,and over a hundred years later it was ordered to be rebuilt. The man who decrees the temple to rebuilt is Cyrus the Persian. B) Isaiah also predicted Jesus Christ. Read Isaiah 53. It details Jesus' life quite directly. "We despised him and rejected him; he endured suffering and pain. No one would even look at him- we ignored him as if he were nothing. But he endured the suffering that should have been ours, the pain that we should have borne. All the while we thought that his suffering was punishment sent by God. But because of our sins he was wounded, beaten because of the evil we did. We are healed by the punishment he suffered, made whole by the blows he recieved. All of were like sheep that were lost, wach of us going his own way. But the Lord made the punishment fall on him, the punishment all of us deserved. He was treated harshly, but endured it humbly; he never said a word. Like a lamb about to be slaughtered, like a sheep about to be sheared, he never said a word. He was arrested and sentenced and led off to die, and no one cared about his fate. He was put to death for the sins of our people. He was placed in a grave with evil men, he was buried with the rich, even though he had never commited a crime or ever told a lie." The Lord says,"It was my will that he should suffer; his death was a sacrifice to bring forgiveness. And so he will see his descendants; he will live a long life, and through him my purpose will succeed. After a life of suffering, he will again have joy; he will know that he did not suffer in vain. My devoted servant, with whom I am pleased, will bear the pubishment of many and for his sake I will forgive them. And so I will give him a place of honor, a place among great and powerful men. He willingly gave his life and shared the fate of evil men. He took the place of many sinners and prayed that they might be forgiven." Seven hundred years before Jesus, his life was predicted by Isaiah speaking as instructed by God. C)The destruction of Tyre was prophesized by Daniel. "They shall make a spoil of thy riches, and make a prey of thy merchandise; and they shall break down thy walls, and destroy thy pleasant houses; and they shall lay thy stones, thy timber, and thy dust in the midst of the water....I will make thee like the top of a rock; thou shalt be a place to spread nets upon; thou shall be built no more....I shall bring up the deep upon thee, and great waters shall cover thee." (Ezekiel 26:12, 14, 19) This prophecey was made hundreds of years before it was fulfilled. The king Nebuchadnezar first destroyed the city 600 years before Christ. Tyre regained power by building a fortress city on an island off the cost of Lebanon, within sight of the ruins of the original city of Tyre. A few hundred years later Alexander the Great ordered his men to use the ruins of tyre to make a bridge or causeway to the island fortress. Every scrap of the original city of Tyre was dumped into the bay. That causeway can be seen to this day as a witness to the fulfilled prophecey of Daniel. Now these aren't the only prophesy that exist in the bible. There are over a thousand predictions in the bible. All predictions come true 100%. There are many other ways of explaining the truth that's in the bible. Mainly I want people to know God does exist, and I want to get the truth out ASAP. I need to let people know now. So take what you can from this message. I know people generally don't like spam, but spam is normally trying to scam or sell you something. This spam is awesome because its coming from my heart that I want everyone possible to know God. I wouldn't waste my time and effort trying to contact people if I didn't have faith. My faith comes straight from God. He didn't tell me to do anything, he just said,"Good News" and I got a Good News bible that day. Its expected of every good Christian to spread the Good News to those who haven't heard, and to strengthen the faith of fellow Christians. Maybe this faith that came to me from God can be passed on to you. I guess part of it comes from how much you'd trust someone you don't know. Well for one, a Christian isn't supposed to lie, so I'd be breaking my own faith by lying to you. I'm sorry there's no way for you to contact me if you have questions. I haven't figured out the best way to handle communication yet. Besides, I can't really answer anything you can't find in the bible. Maybe you'll have to ask a priest or do research to understand what some parts of the bible mean, I'm sorry that I can't help you there. I don't have the perfect message designed to help eveyone. Its good to get a lot of information fast, but I still suggest you read the bible in full. Proverbs teach wisdom, and wisdom is desirable. Its good to learn what Proverbs try and teach. God is pleased when you live: * Intelligently * Honest * Just-morally right. * Fair * Righteous * Loyally * Faithfully * Be mature * Truthful * Loving * Good and resist sin-Innocent * Modest * Kind * Generous * Helping of others * Humble Proverbs give reasons why you want to be these things, but its simpler just to be them and not worry about why. Hard work is praised, but its the Lord's blessing that allows you wealth. Sensible people accept good advice. Good man's words are a fountain of life. Don't speak scornfully of others. Traditional Volumes to Flex Volumes

I am looking to get a feel for what people think is the best way to copy traditional volumes to flex volumes when I upgrade to 7G. Currently I SnapMirror my 960C production volumes and qtrees to a local R150 and a coop R150 located several hundred miles away. I know I need to update the R150 before upgrading the 960C. On my R150 I should have enough space to build a large aggregate to put multiple flex volumes in. I will be able to delete a couple of the traditional volumes to free up more disk once copied into the flex volume. I am leaning toward using ndmpcopy to copy the traditional copies to flex volumes. I'm not sure what performance/speed I will get out of using ndmp. I am open to suggestions if anyone has a better way of doing this. Thanks, Steve Pitts General Dynamics

Is it possible to define aliases for existing nfs volumes ? I need to do some reorg of volumes and qtrees; specifically implement a new naming strategy for volumes. I have 12 volumes with some 200 qtrees being mounted by about 60 Unix machines. Since I can't shut them all down at the same time I'm looking if there is a way that an alias can be created for an existing volume so that I can make the required changes with minimum disruption. Hi, Derek -- I can't tell you about compatibility. I can tell you to watch out for those "oem version" chips. In my recent struggles to understand why our Dell servers can't see LUNs offered by our NetApp, one of the HBAs with which I experimented was listed as a "QLA2322". Since the first thing you do when confronted with situations like this is to make sure everything in the path has the correct (usually latest) firmware, I tried to locate information about this chip from Qlogic's web site, but failed. When I called them to ask about this, they initially didn't believe I had the correct part number, and asked me to extract the card from the box, to get the part number from the ASIC. After confirming this, I was placed on hold for about ten minutes, and then told that this is indeed an OEM chip, and is the reason why my attempts to use the QLA2300 firmware fails. The firmware version number in use on the chip is vastly different than that of the 2300, so it isn't easy to figure out if the firmware is close to what the 2300s know how to do, and it isn't clear at all how one updates the firmware. We're buying straight 2340s. The 2322 will be returned to Dell with the eval system they let us try. Good luck! Don -- Donald S.
