you could try: 1. turn off cifs, use NFS to remove directories, turn CIFS on an ignore any errors 2. check the "cifs shares" list to if anything is being shared. ONTAP usually will not allow deletion of a directory if it is being shared out 3. check "cifs homedir" to see if anything is listed. If it is, delete any entries in the /etc/cifs_homedir.cfg file (or whatever the name is) and then run "cifs homedir load". Orphaned "Home" Folder

My colleague was unwisely experimenting with the automatically created Home Folder on a FAS3020 running 7.03 (basically changing it to a hidden share and changing it back again) and now the directories inside the Home Folder are exhibiting very odd behaviour. I cannot delete or rename any of the folders and although they are not in use, the error I get says that "The directory may be in use". To all intents and purposes this folder is now unusable. I have tried recreating it, running through the setup wizard etc but none of this works. I know this is a special folder, so what methods do I have of recovering it? distributed nfs server testing (any advice?)

Hi! Anyone here have advice on distributed nfs benchmarking? I have a netapp GX system, and a few other distributed nfs clusters that I'm trying to figure out how to benchmark. I have a fair number of clients, linux and bsd, and I'm just looking for what others do in this situation. My needs range from HPC type stuff, to just a generic nfs workload for web hosting, do OLTP database on 4 nodes (Oracle 10g RAC). I know no synthetic benchmark is better then the real application. My group at my company is charged with evaluating storage before we put bother the application guys with running their apps on it. I've explored iozone, but it seems to only coordinate runs across hosts, I then have to aggregate the data on my own. I'm looking for a more integrated tool. One that I can load the binary on, then start it from a control host, it starts a workload on a list of systems, and they report back to the control host on performance data. Workloads should include lots of small file creates/reads/access/deletes and large file type stuff as well (like iozone). I'm thinking I'll probably have to task a tools team for this, but I was hoping for something from the OSS community. I'd pay for it as well, but source access would be a nice feature (for my organization, not for me -- it's all moon man language to me). Any advice is appreciated, and if you reply you may do so off the list. I'll compile my answers, and reply to the list. What version of OnTap are you using? We're running 6.5.5 and there is a vscan option "client_msgbox". I know about this because we had to turn it off due to a problem with false positives that we couldn't get a resolution on from Mcafee. (Basically no matter what we set the timeout to, on large files the scanner would send back a "still scanning..." message, which the filer would interpret as a virus being identified.) -- Michael W. While ServerProtect does have some limited alerting capabilities and we do have it setup to alert our IS group when a file is quarantined or deleted, ServerProtect is apparently unable to alert the user - the person who was attempting to store the file on the Filer. Vscan on the Filer initiates the scan of the file, handing it off to the ServerProtect server for scanning, apparently without user information. From the user's perspective, they copy or move a file to the Filer and the file completely disappears with no explanation. The Filer's Vscan does give ServerProtect the originating computer's name. However, using something like "net send <computer name>" is not an option for us as the Messaging service is disabled on our user's Windows workstations. Additionally our users work from a variety of OSes, making an e-mail based solution most desirable. If you've faced this situation, we'd like to know what you've successfully setup to alert users. I don't have any FAS270's, but would the following work? If the new disks are the same size as the old disks, is to do a "disk replace" and migrate data from one of the old disks on the other "head" to the required disk on this new shelf. And then transfer ownership of that old disk that you "replaced" from, to the "head" that you want to have all the new disks? Davin. Jeff, You have it down correctly - in the expansion shelves, one disk must be owned by one head, the others can be owned by the other head. More specifically, it's slot 1 and slot 0 that matter - this is for SES... Hi Everyone, One of our sites has a FAS270c to which they are going to add a shelf (DS14MkII w/ 5 x 300GB disks). These are the only FAS200-series systems we have and we've never added hardware to them. We would like to add all the disks to a single FAS270 node. However, based on what I can see in the documentation, each system must own at least one of the SES disks in each shelf. This means that one disk must be assigned to node #1 and then the others can all be assigned to node #2. Do I have it straight? I'd like to assign them all to node #2 without wasting a 300GB disk on "management overhead". Is that possible? something I always do. /etc/quotas #path_2_target type size numfiles * tree@/vol/vol0 - - * tree@/vol/vol1 - - etc... This way whenever you run a quota report on the filer or, from my previous post, run quota report via ssh and grep out what you are looking for, you can find it very easily Plus, you are not "restricting" size/number of files, but rather you are "monitoring" it.
