You are able to disable iSCSI connections to a particular network interface. "iswt interface show" will show you the current interface status "iswt interface disable interface" would disable the given interface (example: iswt interface disable e0) It took me a while to find these commands, so I am glad I can same someone else the trouble of searching. Yes, Nate. It will prefer the 36GB drive over the 144GB drive. Hi, the client and the filer both are hosted in CET timezone which is GMT +1 (Europe\Berlin in filerview) I can view the files with different clients but the result is the same. I had a look at the filer and the time is correct. But i found out something interesting.... The problem really is how windows looks at the files. If i set the date on my computer to November or back to Januar when we do not have the daylight saving the "timestamp" windows shows me is correct again. I will have a look at MS Knowledgebase, perhaps i will find a fix for this problem. Thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction... BTW: Can anybody of you see the same effect? What are you viewing the timestamps with? What timezone is that machine in? What timezone is the filer in? My guess: when the client wrote the files, it did so with the filer's timestamp (based on the clock on the filer). When the client reads the timestamp back, it adjusts based on the difference - ie, if the file timestamp is stored in GMT (non-daylight savings time) and the client suddenly adjusts its clock, then it has to calculate for an extra hour. So the only way I could see this happening is if the clock rolled forward on the client (or adjusted on the filer too) but the savings time wasn't included in the calculation. I have seen cases where the serial console port was slightly moved...enough to look like the boot process stopped, or that the serial port stopped working and it looks like the system stopped. Hi everybody, i have a case of one user who stored some files from his Windows2000 client onto a CIFS share on a fas3050 with Ontap 6.5.4. When he first copied the files onto the share the creation time was 10:00 o'clock. This was the Friday before we had the daylight saving change. On next monday the creation time was not 10:00 but 11:00. I have no clue how this could happen. Anybody got an idea? I would be glad even if i get some information about how timestamps are created so i can make a research myself. Thanks a lot for any suggestions in advance Jochen

read the info on how to netboot. ontap will only ever use a disk that is at lest as big as the failed disk. In other words, ontap may: grab a 144 to replace a 36 but it will not grab a 36 to replace a 144 Also, since you have FC9 shelves, you may have 36GB Zoned checksum disks. If they are, then you can replace them with either zoned or block checksum disks. However, at the 36GB capacity, zoned disks are 34.5G and block are 34G, therefore, if your filesystem is block-checksum based, then you can only use a block-checksum disk. OnTap 6.x, mixed shelves, and spares.

All, I am migrating a 740 so that the shelf/volume configuration looks like the following: vol0 -> 1 x DS9 @ 36g (raid4) data -> 1 x DS14 @ 144g (raid4) Basically, I wanted to not waste a 144g drive on vol0 while maximizing my space on the DS14. Note that we're also going to be consolidating many of our NetApps in the future, so it made sense (to me, at least) to keep 'data' on a separate shelf. However, I have concerns with the above configuration. I'm not concerned with disk failures on 'vol0' (or any other volume that might live on 36g drives) since I'm pretty sure that OnTap will do the right thing and take a 36g drive from the spares pool. I am pretty concerned that 'data' might pull a 36g drive from the spares pool instead of a 144g drive. Is my concern justified? Will OnTap 6.3.x do the right thing for the 'data' volume and pull a 144g drive from the spares pool or is there the chance that it would pull a 36g drive? Are you doing Qtree backups or volume backups? Hi Grey, This should not be a problem if the LUN is correctly sized and a backup retention policy is used. There is a formula in the administrator's guide specific to collocating the SnapInfo directory on the same LUN as the live Exchange transaction logs. Here it is for everyone's benefit: transaction log & SnapInfo LUN size = ((number of transaction logs generated between backups * 5 MB) * (number of backups to keep online + 1 for the active file system)) As mentioned in my other replies to this thread, it would be a better idea to get your configuration run through our Exchange sizer by your NetApp technical sales representative. This will ensure proper sizing and performance. That said, there are a couple of new features in SnapManager 3.2 that are relevant here that might dissuade some administrators from wanting to use a separate LUN for the SnapInfo directory: 1) Copy-less transaction log archiving: When the live Exchange transaction logs are located on the same LUN with the SnapInfo directory, SnapManager will use NTFS hard links to archive the transaction logs to the SnapInfo directory rather than copying the file. This has two benefits. First, the backup will take a little less time because generating an NTFS hard link takes less time than copying a 5mb file does. Also, less storage appliance volume space (not to be confused with LUN space) is consumed because fewer blocks are changed when the links are created versus copying the files. There is a new formula in the 3.2 administrator's guide that takes this into account. 2) Support for multiple SnapInfo directories: This allows you to configure one SnapInfo directory per Exchange storage group so that the transaction logs and SnapInfo directory can be located together when there is more than one Exchange storage group. Hi Toasters, It has been a while since my last post to the list but I wanted to echo my private reply from last week to the Toasters list for everyone's benefit. The SnapInfo directory can reside on its own (separate) LUN or on the same LUN with the Exchange transaction logs. What SnapManager uses this directory for is to store metadata corresponding to each backup set. In addition to that, SnapManager copies the transaction logs to the SnapInfo directory as part of its backup process. This way, you can, for example, use an old backup and still restore up to the minute of failure. What SnapManager does is restore the older database from snapshot and then replay all of the logs that it has stored plus any live logs that were generated after the backup. There would need to be a contiguous set of logs available, of course. With respect to your LUN and volume layout, I would encourage you to work with your NetApp technical sales representative to have them run your configuration through the "Exchange Sizer" that they have available. All variables from your particular environment will be collected and then fed into the sizer. This will ensure proper data layout and performance of Exchange as well as the NetApp storage appliance. The NetApp technical sales representatives have been trained on collecting the correct Exchange specific and NetApp specific data to put into the sizer. There are some sizing formulas and guidelines in the Administrator's guide but the sizer takes more than disk space into account when sizing a system. Please pardon my delayed response to the list but there was a reason for that. SnapManager 3.2 was posted to the NOW site today and in this release there are some new features relative to this discussion on sizing. Question re NDMP backups, snap vault.

Have a situation I do not fully understand. Have an NTFS volume - contains mostly home drives. This volume is snapvaulted to a nearstore. The nearstore is backed up via NDMP. Had to change the ACL at the volume level (boss's orders). Granted an existing group change access. I knew this would increase the size of the backups due to changing ACLs on the whole volume. What I don't understand is that the size of the incremental backups have not gone back to "normal" since I made the change. Thoughts? I would think that a good portion of your backup time is the ndmp scan prior to the backup. Not sure anything will help with that. I would think the best way to accomplish backup in the shortest time is to do volume level snapmirrors, which don't care about files. But, barring that- Is your NDMP backup going to a FC tape library? Or SCSI-attached? Or Three way? Also, what onTAP are you running? Perhaps if you went with a large aggregate you'd be better off in all cases.
