Defragmenation Question on Filer after few GB deletion.

Hi all: Could tech gurus respond to this question: I am planning to clean up some space on the filer - say 10GB. Since WAFL FS is intellegent minimizing the defrag issues, what happens on deletion of the files on my volume? If I delete 10GB of 50GB, will the FS still be fragmented, or WAFL does it auto when files are deleted? Do I will have to run defrag tools explicitly? Thank you for your reply. Marge. Hi, does anybody know if there is a way to use snaprestore to recover a qtree out of a snapshot without doing so much manual work?? We are currently in a need for this. Snapshot is free. You can use it to do restores, but it's a very manual process. Snapshot saved my butt many times when I was a customer. SnapRestore is a licensed product that makes large and/or complex restores a simple process. Unlike other vendors that "bolt on" features, all of NetApp's features are built into the OS and only need to be licensed to turn on. Basic Snapshot capabilities do not require a license. You can config the system to take automatc snapshots via the snap sched command or through FilerView. You can also take snapshots on an ad hoc basis with the snap create command or via scripts using RSH or SSH. SnapRestore is a licensed feature. you only need a SnapRestore license when you want to be able to restore a complete volume if you are satisfied with copying files out of the ~snapshot environment SnapRestore is obsolete... No. SnapRestore is an add-on functionality that leverages the snapshot techology built into WAFL. SnapRestore comes in 2 flavors, both are included with the SnapRestore license: 1) Volume SnapRestore: This allows you to revert an entire non-root volume back to a point in time in a few seconds regardless of volume size. A root volume will require a reboot. But it doesn't matter if the volume is 50MB or 8TB it can be recovered in seconds. 2) Single File SnapRestore: This feature allows you to do an in-place recovery of a (usually) large file very quickly. This is particularly useful if you had a corrupted image on LUN and wanted to go back to a known good image. That being said, with *no* SnapRestore license, you can still take snapshots and still recover individual files in WAFL via a NAS client. This feature is and always has been bundled with ONTAP. There may be some add-on software pacakges that require a SnapRestore license like SnapDrive. Don't quote me on that, but I can easily believe that SnapDrive would want a SnapRestore license for LUN recovery. You may want to check with your rep if you are looking at SnapDrive. Steve, Mixing drives in the way you expanded your aggregate is perfectly fine. If anything, you've added raid groups that have a better performance footprint, so you may see an overall increase in performance as WAFL writes across raidgroups during CPs. The performance issues you mentioned would come from adding a slower drive to a RG with faster drives - thus bringing down the overall performance (this is not the case in your situation). You should attempt to keep one spare of each drive type if at all possible, but ONTAP will select a drive of lesser speed if no other spare is available. Summary: The thing to avoid here is adding slower drives to raid groups with faster drives, or allowing a failed drive to rebuild on a drive with a slower speed thus bringing down the overall performance of the RG\AGGR. It won't make the filer crash, but you may not get any performance benefit out of the faster drives. We just bought two new shelves of ATA drives to enlarge an aggregate on our R200 and the new drives are all 7200 RPM while the old drives are 5400 RPM, same size though. It looks like ONTAP will let me add the new disks to the aggregate if I use the -f (force) flag. I'm inclined to force, unless this ruin performance or make the filer crash. Hi Toasters, as i have read a lot about accessing a filer via ftp i am still wondering if i can use SFTP also. I have not found anything on this on NOW. Has anybody ever made experience with this? Thanks in advance Jochen
