Looks like we filled up an aggregate that we dump backups into. Filer bounced itself, to take the aggregate offline, which is an interesting way to deal with the situation: Aug 6 01:39:46 filer1b [filer1b:wafl.vol.walloc.rsv.offline:error]: Volume backups free space reserve is critically low. Rebooting system to take volume offline. Please contact support for assistance. Anyway, the aggr is in restricted state now, and when I try to online it, event log says: 8/7/2018 08:43:46 filer1b WARNING wafl.vol.walloc.rsv.failmount: Failing mount of volume backups. Free space reserve is too low. Please contact support for assistance. I'd really like to not have to blow this aggr away and re-run all these backups. Presumably there's a way to get this back online. This is on cdot 8.2.4p4 Any ideas?

And from my experience with fpolicy and CommVault for HSM (Archiving of old files) it's fragile as all hell and not reliable. When fpolicy goes down... all hell will break loose. And what happens when you have two different people editing the same file at seperate sites? Last edit wins? This way lies sanity... you need a cluster aware filesystems. Of course people will point out that you have the same problem with NFS if you edit the same file from two seperate clients at the same site. It just silently uses the last one to write is the answer. But for remote sites with fpolicy, I'm sure it will be even more fragile. John

Max volume count per node

Hey there, does anyone know what the real implication of the max volume count per node setting on the FAS systems is good for? Is there any chance that this limit gets raised on newer OnTap releases or is there any secret flag to raise it (knowing that support would not want to see that)? You can also look at somthing like DFS or a global name space like panzura. I believe they can do multiple copies but have some hardware requirements. SnapMirror Bi-directional possible?

Just wanted to do a quick sanity check, is there any way to have SnapMirror replication go both directions between sites? We are running cDOT 9.x at both locations. I came across some older posts (several years ago) that seem to indicate that bi-directional snapmirror would not be possible. Just wondering if this might have changed with cDOT 9.x capabilities? Mac OS X, SMB NTFS, and chmod/chown

Hello I have users on Mac OS X that are unable to uncompress zip files in SMB shares which sit on top of NTFS security style volumes. I hadn't heard of this problem until I started migrating my users to new shares, previously they were all on UNIX security style volumes. If I am understanding my users correctly, they can reliably reproduce this problem this way: - In Finder, right click on a folder on a share, select Compress - Zip file is created successfully on share - Double click on Zip file that was created - Mac OS X archiver utility pops up an error box, "Unable to expand (zip name) into (target dir). (Error 13 - Permission denied). Examining the Zip file from the command line shows that it is a fully formed file, no corruption, etc. When I attempt to uncompress the Zip file using the command line on the same machine that created it, I can see that unzip is attempting to chmod the files and directories and getting a Permission Denied error back from the svm. How to resolve LUN misalignment?

Showing Alignment: misaligned on a large LUN which has been 7MTT migrated. Looking for a procedure for ONTAP 9.1, all articles seem to be for 7-Mode. Can anyone in this group offer any advice? node too busy

Hi people, I saw a recent post from a list member asking about how to finsd out what is keeping a node so busy. No, I had a quick look at my systems and sure as eggs I have a node which is 99% bust pretty much all the time dispite not doing that mush I/O. FAS8040 cpu pegged for over 1 month 24/7

I have an 8040 is at 100% cpu all the time on all cores. It has been like this for at least a month, my stats do not go back further than this. I expect the cpu was not this high before upgradin to 9.3P2. I feel like i should be able to get more than 10k ops out of a 150TB hybrid aggregate with 222 disks in it. Any help or feedback on performance expectations will be appreciated. Let me know if any stats would be usefull, i stripped my email down as my first try was rejected for being too big. can't auth against domain with group

Hey guys, this one is racking my brain and I am dreading calling netapp with this issue. I have like 10 differnet files all authenticating against the same domain for admin access. On one of them only hostname::> security login show -vserver hostname User/Group Application Auth MEthod Role domain\Storage_Team ssh domain admin Does not work, yet domain\jordan ssh domain admin works just fine. I am using the exact same commands, dns servers, etc to configure them all. almost all are currently 9.3P2. I beleive I have them all configured exactly the same way for auth, but appearently I am missing somehting. Thanks, Jordan

Spare Disks

Toasters, Inherited a few production 7-mode systems that are off maintenance, due to be retired and pretty low on spare disks. Migrations to new ONTAP 9 systems (A300's, yay!) are in progress but I'd like to purchase several spare disks for the 7-mode systems as a safety measure. Unfortunately, these disks are so old that NetApp no longer sells them. Is it generally safe to purchase refurbished (or new) NetApp disks from a 3rd party? Can anybody recommend a vendor? I already grabbed quotes from our NetApp account team for lager capacity disks that I'm told won't be a problem for existing RAID groups made up of smaller disks. Primary concern is keeping the data safe/available so, if purchasing 3rd party is a bad idea, we'll definitely to through NetApp. 3rd party options always come up in discussions and we've never gotten outside feedback so just curious if anybody has had good or bad experiences going 3rd party. Restrict VSC to a Subset of SVM's

Hello Toasters, Our ontap clusters contain a number of SVM's. For purposes of this post I'll classify our SVM's into two broad categories: * SVM's that host storage resources for our ESXi clusters * SVM's that do NOT host storage resources for our ESXi clusters We initially direct connected VSC to the SVM's hosting VMware resources. As documented by NetApp, this resulted in VSC provisioning volumes (NFS datastores) then mounting them via indirect paths (our SVMs have multiple lifs). We dont want datastores mounted via indirect paths, nor do we want to deal with the other limitations associated with direct connecting VSC to SVM's. Now, AFAIK, the only option we're left with is connecting VSC to the cluster management LIF. The catch is we only want to allow VSC privileges to manage the SVM's hosting VMware resources. VSC should not have privileges to the non-Vmware related SVMs. Is there a way to connect VSC to the cluster management LIF while only allowing VSC the ability to provision storage to and manage a subset of SVM's on the cluster? We're currently running VSC 6.2.1 and ONTAP 9.2P2. -Phil

moving CIFS shares

Hi people, Background: we have 20 odd volumes for fileshares. We limit the size of the volumes to 10T. When a volume gets near full, we need to shuffle shares to new volumes or volumes with plenty of space. Does anybody have a magical solution for moving fileshares between volumes? With minimal but not necessarily zero downtime? Obvious solutions are: 1) Down share, copy share to new volume, up share 2) Down share, clone volume, up share on new volume, split volume, cleanup mess. I was wondering if anybody has seen a system to proxy the share and move it in the background. I have seen this work with NFS shares but not with CIFS. Any magicians out there? Regards, pdg

Attack of the Zombies

Is anyone familiar with messages such as these, and how to diagnose what volume(s) on what aggregate is triggering it? 4/27/2018 11:24:31 node1 NOTICE wafl.zombie.susp.msg.threshold: WAFL(R) is experiencing zombie throttling possibly due to requests for large number of file deletions. This can be mitigated by a combination of a) reducing the load on the system, b) issuing the file deletion requests in smaller batches and c) increasing the limits to allow more zombies to be queued on the system (Please contact technical support). I'm troubleshooting a latency/performance issue and this caught my eye in the event logs. Web searches aren't really coming up with anything useful and there is mention of it in the NetApp KB but no real background information or troubleshooting steps. Also, the (R)egistered Trademark after WAFL in the notice is weird to have in a technical event log. cdot snapmirror: how to delete stalled relationship?

Hi, I decommissioned a CDOT cluster and only then discovered it was in a SM relationship (in broken-off state), as a source. If I now try to delete the relationship, it fails with: Warning: Unable to list entries in cluster "decommed-cluster". Failed to contact peer cluster "decommed-cluster" at addresses: 1.1.1.1, 2.2.2.. RPC: Remote system error [from mgwd on node "mynode" (VSID: -1) to mgwd at 3.3.3.3, 4.4.4.4] Error: command failed: Volume "my_volume" not found.
