Netapp NearStore VTL700 & EMC/Legato Networker experience

Hi all, Has any one else out there dropped a NearStore VTL700 (or other model) into an existing NetApp/Legato Networker environment? We're thinking about doing this, but we'd love to hear people's experiences with it. Currently, we have SDLT 320 drives connceted via SCSI to the backup server, which talks over Gigabit to the Filers and other clients. In the new plan, we've have FibreChannel connecting the Filers, VTL and Backup server, with the tape library connected to the VTL only. Some of our concerns how we're going to be able to restore legacy Networker backup tapes? Will the VTL handle tapes it doesn't know anything about and allow them to be imported? We're also thinking of finally making the move to NDMP as well from NFS backups, but we're quite concerned about the limitations of DAR (Direct Access Restore) allowing us to restore large chunks of NDMP backups without having to manually break it into chunks due to Networker/NetApp limits? Just throwing a question out there curious to hear people's thoughts or experiences. Every time I end up dealing with hundreds of stale file handles because of a server move/change I become increasingly annoyed by the stateless nature of NFS and think to myself "Maybe this time I'll finally start seriously looking at AFS." Other than lots of other ways an AFS deployment could be complicated, I wonder how if at all a Netapp can be part of an AFS deployment? Also feel free to tell me how using AFS is crazy in general and I should just accept my stale file handles. -- Michael W. DFM & Debian GNU Linux ?

Hi, I tried to install DFM3.3R1 on a Debian. Firsh the binary tests the validity of /etc/redhat-release so i gave him "Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3". Second i transformed NTAPdfm.i386.rpm to a debian package with alien. The package were succesfully installed but i think the database has not been setup: not database/tables created. When i launch "dfm service start" i get this message: Dec 12 17:49:40 [dfm:ERROR]: Could not get valid status after attempting to start sql server. NOTE: This machine could be configured for failover as a stand by. Sql services will not be started on a stand by machine. If this machine is not configured for failover, the server may already be running. Please use the following system command to verify: "ps -e | grep dbsrv9" I think i have to launch dbsrv8 with thoses options: dbsrv9 -n MonitorDB_leia2 -o "/opt/NTAPdfm/log/sybase.log" -os 10000000 -gd all -gl all -gk all -gp 8192 -ct- -x SharedMemory,tcpip -ud /opt/NTAPdfm/data/monitordb.db but it says me "Could not open/read file: /opt/NTAPdfm/data/monitordb.db". Someone already had this problem ? How can i setup this db, creates the tables it needs and launch it ? -- Auré

Mostly because my budget for this sort of thing is somewhere between zero and zero + 15%. I'm happy to hear about more expensive solutions for future reference though, just to know how other people deal with similar problems. For example, in the last 10 years, we've had to re-ip our entire networks four or five times, couple of times due to acquisitions, others because the network infrastructure team decided things would be better if we re-architected everything. I've also dealt with about 4 or 5 server room moves in the same time period. Ironically, CIFS is never a problem in these scenarios, but NFS is frequently the cause of weeks of trickling-in problem reports and complaints. -- Michael W. As long as you're not sharing the data files between multiple database servers, this should work fine, with the understanding that it "won't be as fast" (greater latency) necessarily as local/block disk. We'd like to have our database storage resident on a Filer with NFS. Do any of you have experience or insight into this for MySQL or PostgreSQL? I understand Oracle's happy to work like this but my google searches seem to indicate it's a bad idea to use NFS storage for PostgreSQL or MySQL. hello everybody there is a filer fas960 with ontap 7.0.4. I want to create an account that only can monitor volume and snapshot spaces, and in case of volume full, to be able to delete snapshots, and all these only via http. However , if i create an account using useradmin comand with allowed capabilities only login-http-admin, this account, among other things, can perform volume and aggregate deletion, have access to etc/hosts, etc/hosts.equiv, e.t.c. Is somehow possible to restrict this account to specified capabilities? It is possible via telnet, but what about http? thnks in advance John Sfetsoris

I had the exact same problem where the restrictions were perfect using the CLI but had no effect on FilerView. Turned out to be bug id 167183 which is still not fixed. For what it's worth, CIFS probably continued to function for already connected clients because of existing(cached) WAFL credentials and SID cache. If the clients had disconnected, waited 20 minutes and reconnected, I would have expected failure. Domain issues would also explain failure to connect via MMC. NFS shares suddenly giving permission denied

NetApps 740 running 6.4.5. All of a sudden starting to get permission denied errors on some of our NFS shares from our Tru64 Unix servers, not all of them but just some of them. And with some other weirdness where we could go into the top level but then get permission denied when trying to list the contents. The messages file had the following: SamrGetGroupsForUsers: Exception rpc_s_unknown_reject caught. SamrCloseHandle: Exception rpc_s_connection_closed caught. and then had a bunch of the following afterwards: LsaOpenPolicy2: Exception rpc_s_assoc_grp_max_exceeded caught. SamrConnect2: Exception rpc_s_assoc_grp_max_exceeded caught. CIFS was working fine, but I couldn't hit the filer throught the Computer Management console on the MMC. I checked processes and auditing on the Unix side and couldn't tie it down to a specific instance. Though I hated to do it, we ended up rebooting to restore services. I've tried Googling for this in reference to a NetApp box but am coming up empty handed. Lotus Notes

Has anyone installed, implemented, deployed Lotus Notes with a NetApp filer? I know there "SnapManager for Lotus Notes" doesn't exist so how can I do this with the same functionality and SME, and SMBR for that matter. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Hi Brian, Number of NFS daamons used by Data OnTAP on any NetApp filer is, and has always been, exactly zero. Note on all NetApp specsfs submissions (www.spec.org/sfs97r1): "NetApp's embedded operating system processes NFS requests from the network layer without any NFS daemons, and uses non-volatile memory to improve performance." Data OnTAP is not Unix, and is not even "based on" any particular Unix, despite a large number of CLI similarities. The microkernal is developed from the ground up as special-purpose. (i.e. this is not a "stripped down" or modified Linux or FreeBSD product like so many others out there). So you can't directly apply many Unix considerations for performance management to Data OnTAP. SnapVault - Question on hourly vaults

Hello all, We use a single SnapVault filer as a repository for 6 separate filers. With the nightly SnapVault schedules we are able to balance source filer connection limits by staggering the vaults in between 10pm-6am as the business requirement doesn't dictate a specific time for these to occur overnight. We would like to also move the hourly snapshot schedule to this SnapVault filer. However, the standard daytime snap schedule is at 8,12,16 for all filers, and it can't deviate. We have about 400 qtree's to vault so at 8am when they all try to vault at once I get lots of failures due to source connection limits. We can't stagger these times since the business areas all expect their snap to be from those specific times. We could keep the hourly's on the source filers rather than moving them to our SnapVault filer, but we would like to recoup that expensive FC disk for non-snapshot duties by moving the snaps to cheaper ATA on the SnapVault filer. Any suggestions? The retries are set at 2 and bandwidth is throttled at 100MB/s. Thanks! Thanks for the CIFS info, I remembered someone mentioning this, but had a hard time finding any documentation on this. You are making out the iSCSI thing out to be a lot worse than it really is. You can mount snapshots as writeable volumes to the server and copy of files out of them into the main LUN. This is particularly easy with SnapDrive, and takes all of 5 minutes to have a snapshot mounted. You can then copy the files off. This makes recovery of individual mailboxes easy, without requiring a lot of space. Additionally to backup, you mount the snapshot of the LUN to a server and read the files off using a host agent rather than just backing up the LUN files, this allows quicker recovery from tape for individual nsf files. All of this is easy to accomplish with SnapDrive. I like the CIFS method as recovery from snapshots is easy, but if you have a lot of traffic this can be an issue (CIFS isn't a particularly fast protocol compared to iSCSI). Anyway just wanted to clear that up a little. Domino is happy to access data files on mapped drives. Don't forget if you decide to use iSCSI you have to have an area big enough on your filer to restore the entire LUN just to retrieve one email (potentially). Also, your user would have to wait for the entire LUN to be restored from tape if you don't have a snapshot available. Flexclone may help with this but I'm not sure as I've not used it. The beauty of this is that restore can be done easily and quickly from regular snapshots as .NSF files are pretty robust. As far as clustering goes I would recommend using Domino application clustering over windows clustering especially if you have more than one site with decent bandwidth between them. It will give you a full DR solution and means you don't have to buy a snapmirror license if your using the filer exclusively for Domino as domino can handle replication pretty efficiently. I also recommend that if you have roaming profiles hosted on a filer you keep your users personal notes data files (there are about 4 or 5 main ones such as address book) somewhere in the profile. Just means you can recover these just as easily. optimize volume/qtree for oracle db

Hi, currently we are running an oracle db on an FAS6070c and today we had some complaints that for some hours operations which use a lot of getattr-ops, like ls -la does, are slower than they used to be. An oracle-colleague told me that he thinks there is a best-pratcise for volumes with oracle-db inside which describes something that boosts up getattr's. I did not find anything appropriate on NOW. There once was a product called SnapManager for Domino (or was it Lotus Notes?)... at any rate, it was discontinued because the need was no longer there: As many have pointed out, Lotus does a good job of recovering itself after a normal filer-based snapshot. Since it's BOTH FC ports on both heads at the same time, I'm inclined to believe your switch rebooted. hello, i have 2 FAS980C's in my SAN environment. Data on one is mirrored to the other. i have twice experienced link breaks on two of my hba's adapter 5b and 6b on both filers at the same time, the links come up at the same time after about 7mins. both times when this has happened, our Exchange server looses access to its SAN disk devices leading to a downtime. Enable the option (temporarily) 'cifs.trace_dc_connection'. The output (via screen\messages file) will help. It may not be an issue with complete connectivity drop, but the DC is definitely rejecting the RPC request to look up group membership (SamrGetAliasMembership). We're seing this problem since a bit more of a week now, and still have no clue what the cause of the problem could be... the SID cache seems to be a good suspect, but it's hard to tell; we've also thought of buggy win2k3 patches... In parallel, we're seing the following messages in the logs: CIFSRPC SamrGetAliasMembership: Exception rpc_s_unknown_reject caught. Has anybody experienced a similar problem ? As of ONTAP 7.1, you can have both Compliance and Enterprise licensed at the same time, but the aggr types are different. Licenses can be removed while data exists; you just can't create new SnapLock aggrs or lock files anymore. You'll need to perform a data migration to go from one to the other - vol copy is the recommended route to preserve immutability. You may need to check with your compliance officer or legal counsel to ensure that chain of custody is preserved via necessary documentation. More logs would be helpful - by default, the filer will try to 'improve' DC connectivity by searching every 4 hours. The last part of the logs that you posted may very well be that, or more likely it is trying to regain connectivity after an error (security context expiring is not something that is seen frequently - this is abnormal!). The biggest problems are the context expiring, the GSSAPI security context error (result of the security context expiring, no doubt), and the RPC rejection. I'm assuming that the RPC rejection and the GSSAPI errors are a direct result of the context expiration.
