Snap Manager for SQL / SnapMirror issue.

Help! We have a SQL Cluster, running Server 2003, Snapdrive 3.2r1 and Snapmanager SQL 1.5 On node one, we have an sql instance that runs that Snapshots/Snapmirrors the SQL data over to our offsite location twice a day. Works like a champ. On node two, we have a new instance running all the same software, the backup runs and complets with no issues, but for some reason it will not snapmirror. From the logs, it looks like it doesn't even try. There are no errors. On the node that works, we get the following in the backuplogs: *** REQUEST SNAPMIRROR UPDATE AFTER BACKUP *** Starting SnapMirror update... Querying disk list for SnapMirror update... Retain up-to-the-minute restore ability for older backups in other management groups: No Leave database attached after DBCC: No Run DBCC CHECKDB with Live Database Before Backup: No Run DBCC CHECKDB with Live Database After Backup: No Backup Management Group: Standard Update SnapMirror after operation: Yes <---------------- Run Command after operation: No I have reinstalled SMSQL, and I can even manually kick off a snapmirror from the node inside of Snapdrive so I know were talking on the right ports. I have double checked the RSH access, and it all seems to be in order. Both the SQL instance has access as well as the Snapdrive service account. Any suggestions? I've been fighting this for five days. Netapp support is trying to help, but we're getting no where fast. Rod Newcomb

I usually ndmpcopy the data Edit /etc/cifsconfig_shares.cfg with the new path Restart cifs As I usually take a week or two to migrate a whole volume (I'm rearranging the filesystem while I migrate) I usually wait until I've migrated the whole thing and then rename old volume to something else (or destroy it if I havn't had a user pointing to it for a week) and rename the new vol and check the updates happened correctly in cifsconfig - if I've got doubts after the vol rename I restart cifs to find out how much trouble I'm in (if any) -----Original Message----- From: owner-toasters(a)mathworks.com [mailto:owner-toasters@mathworks.com] On Behalf Of tmac Sent: Saturday, 10 February 2007 4:22 AM To: Stephen C. I've actually used the vol and aggr rename commands frequently, not in the process of migration. My current environment was\has been in disarray before my arrival and I'm trying to go back and standardize and clean up some things. That said, in the pretext of migration, perhaps it should be an optional thing to rename the exports/shares? "CIFS terminate" and replace vol0old -> vol0 in the /etc/cifsconfig_share.cfg. "CIFS restart". "Year! I am the master !" But I was too stupid again. Because now my CIFS Clients got the shares but they could not see any data. And I got no idea why! So I "vol rename vol0 vol1" and "vol rename vol0old vol0" And now the CIFS clients connect back to their shares on the old FC9 again. So whats wrong about my proceedings? If you are using SecureAdmin/Secure FilerView/SSL, you need to restart the secureadmin services when you cross the 7.x line. There was a major code change starting in 7.0 and the service must be manually restarted (a reboot won't do it). Snapshot question

I have a soon to be problem with snapshots coming up. I will be deleting a directory that has 238GB in it and I would really prefer this not to get captured by a snapshot if there is anything I can do about it. I don't want to destroy the exsisting snaps either. Does anyone know of any way to keep this out of the snap? Any thoughts on how to limit the hit? Hello, we are running an FAS920 with FC9 shelfs with data and new empty DS14 shelfs. On the FC9 we got one volume /vol/vol0 with root and data on it. Last week we upgraded from ONTAP 6.5.6 to 7.2.1 without problems. Now we want to move our data to the DS14 shelfs. We created one aggr1 with lots of drives. After that we created two new flex vols - /vol/root (20GB) and an /vol/vol1 (1TB) for the data. We copied the root data with no clients on the filer with "ndmpcopy -l0 /vol/vol0/etc /vol/root/etc". Worked fine in 7 minutes. Than we change the booting volume with "vol options /vol/root root". Booting from it, no problem -but now by requsting http://filer-ip/na_admin just the first page came and we were not able to start the FilerView Web-App. So so we switch the root vol again with "vol options /vol/vol0 root" and FilerView works fine. Script to automate Dev System from Production.

I am looking for some help. We have two MS SQL servers. One is running in production, and we are snapmirroring the data over to an offsite location. Since Snapmirrors are read only, we would like to use Flexclone to create a writeable copy of this LUN for our off-site SQL server to use. We also have SnapDrive and Snap Managager/SQL software available to us. The trick is that I would like to automate the following process: Snapmirror to our offsite location (done using SMSQL) Shut down SQL at our offsite location. (No Problem) Disconnect the LUN (Using SDCLI ?) Create a new flexclone from our Snapmirrored copy. (Lun Create ?) Reconnect to the new Flexclone LUN (????) Start up SQL Services. (No problem) I would like this process to run automatically every 24 hours. Does anyone have any scripts or suggestions on how I can do this? Rod Newcomb

Can other non-visa clients access this CIFS share in the way you want your vista box to access it? Just because your user is in AD, doesn't give it permissions on the share. You need to make sure that user has access on the filer through group and user permissions as well as the shares have to be given to that user or a group that user is in. The filer is a snapmirror destination and using sysstat I see Net in readings of 1300+ kB/s while a snap operation is in progress. Snapmirror reports show one transfer of 4.20GB taking 2:28 hours and another of 1.26GB taking 53 minutes. My problem comes into play with NFS operations. I use the filer as a disk backup destination using Legato Networker and only get less than 80KB/s transfers. This shows up in sysstat as 6-8 NFS ops/s with less than 75 kB/s showing for input traffic. I've tried various changes to the mount options and played with settings on the Solaris host and the filer. Had no joy anywhere. Anyone have any thoughts on how to speed this up? I have thought about pulling the backup target in-house and using the Legato clone mechanism to get the data back to the filer but I doubt that would help much. Steve I sure hope that is not the problem. I had gone down that line of thought but I keep coming back to the snapmirror transfer rates. I don't know the details of a snapmirror transfer but I would expect to see issues there also if latency was the problem. Perhaps you can send a large burst of data to the netapp (high bandwidth) but it takes a while for that burst to travel all the way across the network (high latency). In this situation a process on the NFS client sends a request and has to wait for the request to arrive at the netapp and then wait for the response to before sending the next request. During these wait periods, more data could be sent or received, so the network just sits idle for most of the time. If the load on the netapp is really low (which is probably the case) then I suggest testing this theory by firing up a bunch of parallel processes on the NFS client that each read and/or write a large file on the netapp. If the throughput goes up, then that probably indicates latency. I'm trying to increase the NFS ops of an R200 that sits at the end of a WAN link and I can't find the magic bullet if there is one. Some background for you: The destination end is an 18MB section of an OC3 ATM pipe with little extra traffic. The source end is a 100MB pipe into an ATM cloud. The filer is a snapmirror destination and using sysstat I see Net in readings of 1300+ kB/s while a snap operation is in progress. Snapmirror reports show one transfer of 4.20GB taking 2:28 hours and another of 1.26GB taking 53 minutes. My problem comes into play with NFS operations. I use the filer as a disk backup destination using Legato Networker and only get less than 80KB/s transfers. This shows up in sysstat as 6-8 NFS ops/s with less than 75 kB/s showing for input traffic. I've tried various changes to the mount options and played with settings on the Solaris host and the filer. Had no joy anywhere. Anyone have any thoughts on how to speed this up? I have thought about pulling the backup target in-house and using the Legato clone mechanism to get the data back to the filer but I doubt that would help much. On the console, he will give information when there are unrecoverable blocks. I'm not sure that he gives info when it's finished. But you can monitor the process (wafl scan status). Depending on the size of the volume, it can take a long time. You can speed up. This (give the process more priority, if you want). has anyone completed the netapp certified expert exams? coming from a day to day administration level on filers for many years im interested in what sort of topics they cover and if they are geared towards the real world or more of a training course regurgitation. in so many other vendor/system certs the exams focus on trivial and unrealistic aspects of adminstration--for example, sun certs focusing on adding printers and users via the gui---puhlease. mostly im just trying to figure out if someone could reasonably take the tests on experience alone or do i need to shell out 15K plus on all the little courses to get the courseware and then cram that. thanks -- Daniel Leeds Senior Systems Administrator Edmunds.com

Thanks for all the responses. This is to meet an IOPS objective. I've run reallocate scans on the LUN's before, but it is not clear if that has done anything. Does a reallocate scan force the data to spread out on more spindles? After you add on the other set of disks, the data you write will likely be put there, since that's where the most free contiguous space is. I assume you mean aggregate vs volume snapshots? WAFL creates snapshots at the volume level, not the qtree level. What would be the correct way to calculate the total size of an aggregate with the following SNMP information: dfHighTotalKBytes = 2 dfLowTotalKBytes = -1834563852 I thought it would be 2*4294967295 + 1834563852 = 10,424,498,442 But this comes out 625,839,594 short of the df -rk output: Aggregate total = 11,050,338,036 The MIB is at version 1.17.3. Yes, that is one of the rare cases where it could be useful to have a dedicated root volume/aggr. However, running wafl_iron should be a very rare event, and in the case of a single shelf system, it's my opinion that not consuming the space outweighs this possibility. Good advice - forgot about that one... To make matters worse, the wafl check in question (when root vol is involved) must first run on the underlying aggr, THEN on each volume contained within it. That is indeed serious down time, as the point of an aggr is large number of disks (which means lots of empty space to fill with data). We currently have both sides of this particular scenario: systems with only one massive aggr with the root vol contained within, and systems with a separate aggr\root vol and other aggrs dedicated to data. It depends on the system: FAS250, or FAS270 (especially the single-shelf variety), it is a WASTE of a system to have a separate aggr for root. With some of the larger sized systems, it typically doesn't matter if you suddenly lose 3 disks out of 50+. The traditional reason to keep the data sets separate is recovery: losing both the root vol and data would be a terrible shame. However, the chance of losing 3 disks across a single RG is almost NIL. Even then, I'd rather lose my root than my data. The other reason is performance: having a heavy I/O load on data access could cause problems for filer performance if the root vol were to be co-located within the same physical disks. Again, the chance of having that type of issue with an extremely large aggregate isn't very high. Between the two above arguments, there aren't a lot of reasons not to put it all together. I would just grow out aggr0 and save the space. There are only a few corner cases where having a dedicated root aggr makes any sense and they are rare. NFS equivalent of "cifs top"?

Anyone know if this exists? "nfs stat -l" kind of give me what I want, but I'd really like it in the format of cifs top if possible. When the ops for CIFS look out of whack for some reason, it's really easy to find the culprit via cifs top. Would be great to have for nfs too.
