ISCSI Issue and VMWare ESX 3.0.1

I'm currently dealing with a problem on several of our ESX IBM LS21 Blades when trying to attach to ISCSI Luns on the Netapp FAS 3020's. Our Netapp currently connects to two separate physical networks to deliver ISCSI connectivity. The ESX support folks are telling us that the netapp presents both ISCSI interfaces to the server. Initially the ESX box connects on the correct interface, but then after a few hours it attempts to try the other IP address and fails and disconnects the entire VM Host from the Netapp, despite the fact that the network never went down. We have several Windows 2003 servers with ISCSI initiator that don't have this problem on identical hardware and chassis. I assume that either ESX's iscsi initiator is badly designed, or MS has broken some industry standard spec. To rearchitect our storage network will take significant investment on our part, and we'd rather come up with a way to fix this either by pushing on ESX to fix the initiator or finding a way to have the Netapp only send one IP address back to the initiator. Is there any way to resolve this from the Netapp perspective? Thanks in advance. -Justin

Vol copy will copy a volume's contents and the snapshots as well, but it won't work between traditional and flexible volumes. Since you have space for both the traditional volumes and the aggregates, could you just not migrate the volumes contents to the new volumes and start snapshotting there, and at the same time retain the old volumes for a period of time until you don't require the old snapshots anymore. But there's no way to just move the snapshot from point a to point b. move snapshots

List, We have a FAS270 recently upgraded to 7.0.5. We would like migrate from traditional volumes to flexible volumes and keep the existing snapshots. I searched the NOW site and could not find much, has anyone done this? Will we be able to retain the existing snapshots?? We have enough drives to have the aggregate and traditional volumes working simultaneously on the same filer. Cheers. Tom.

Hello, this is my first posting to this list. A customer of us has a NetApp 3020 with 3 S-ATA shelfes each filled with 500 GB disks. He has a trunked 2*1 GBit network connection. He has 3 volumes, each volume resides on a different aggregate built from the disks of one shelf each. Via NFS he gets a perfomrance of sustained 60 MB per second with large and small files. Only one connection used during the test, no aditional traffic on the system and network segment. He expected the performance to be "much" better. Not sure how many know about this, but kind cool We all know that scrubbing usually takes place at Sunday@1am There is a new option: raid.scrub.schedule Not sure when it came into being, but here is a valid use: 8h@mon@22,8h@tue@22,8h@wed@22,8h@thu@22,8h@fri@22,18h@sat@6,24h@sun@0 This schedule allows the scrub to run for 8 hours, mon-fri starting at 10pm. It also allows the scrub to run all day sat & sun. This is good for my environment, manipulate it to work with yours. The man page says that if a #m or #h is specified, then it overrides the default scrub duration option. As a precaution, I changed mine to 8 hours (from -1, which means run until completion) Not sure how well it works, I just tried this this morning. My FAS980 scrubs all finish before I get in Mondays. My R200s though usually run until about mid-day or late afternoon on monday. I will let you all know if it works next week.... -- --tmac RedHat Certified Engineer

FAS3020 - aggr best practises.

Greetings: I am new to the NetApp world and am looking for some advice/guidance. We purchased a NetApp 3020i with two shelves (10K 144GB FC drives) a few months ago. We have now placed an order for 4 additional shelves (fully loaded) with 10K 144GB drives. The current configuration is one large RAID DP Group with 1 HotSpare (27 Disk DP RAID Group), which belong to one aggregate (aggr0). My question: 1. The new enclosures, should I create 2 x 28 Disk DP RAID groups and add it to the existing aggregate? The application we run is IO intensive and more spindles the better. Does anyone see any disadvantages of doing the above? 2. Does anyone have a formula to calculate mean time to Repair on the 10K 144GB disks on a busy filer? I only have one hot spare disk, should I add more, is there a rule of thumb? 3. We currently have multiple volumes on the filer, after adding the new shelves/spindles, if I run a reallocate on the existing volumes, would it take advantage of the additional spindles. Any help/guidance greatly appreciated. Thanks, Darish.

FAS270: DOT on SATA disks possible?

Hi, I have a question regarding SATA drives in a FAS270. Is it possible to use a FAS270 with just 14x500GB SATA drives in an expansion shelf and run ontap on the sata disks? Toasters; I'm currently using "treesize pro" to help me understand what kinds of files are being stored on my filer by the users. It's a good windows- only app that gives all kinds of good info. Do others of you out there have any good recommendations for how to do reporting on files, space reporting, etc. on your filers? Thanks; JKB

Auditing CIFS shares for compliance purposes

I am currently faced with having to provide which users have access to what directories within our CIFS shares on our 270 and 3020 filers. The only auditing that I have been successful with thus far is pulling success and failures of access to the shares using the cifs.audit.enable option and then viewing the event log via windows. Has anybody else been faced with having to provide a log of who has access to what directories? I would imagine that I am not the only one that has come across this...Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am using Ontap 7.0.5 if that helps. Thanks, Skip

Block vs Zoned checksum disks

Hi, I've got an old lab filer with a shelf of X231 disks. I've got my hands on a couple of extra 36GB disks to act as spares, but it turns out they're X225s rather than X231s - ie a 512 byte sector size rather than a 520 byte sector size. The /etc/qual_devices file lists the following: D NETAPP X225_ST336704FC NA42 512 D NETAPP X231_ST336704FC NA42 520 The two disks are obviously identical seagate drives, but AFAIR (I could be wrong, it's been a long day) I can't use a 512 byte drive in a volume of 520 byte drives. Is this correct? If so, is there any way around this? I can re-format the drives with a 520 byte sector size - and add an X225 line with a 520 byte sector size, would that do the trick? If not, is there any way of changing the disk label from X225 to X231? Thanks in advance, -Ronan

SnapDrive for Linux

All Can anyone help me with SnapDrive for Linux? I'm using CentOS 4.4 kernel 2.6.9-42.0.10, iSCSI initiator 4.0.3.0-4, latest Host Utilities Kit and latest SnapDrive for Linux. Filer is running ONTAP 7.2. I can connect to the filer with no problems and mount drives on my Linux server provided I don't use LVM. When I try to create LUNs using LVM I get a weird error. This is the command I'm using: [root@vader ~]# snapdrive storage create -fs /filerlun2 -dg netappdg2 -lun fas250:/vol/linuxlun/lun1 lun2 lun3 -lunsize 1g 0001-417 Command error: The following names are already in use: netappdg2. Please specify other names. There are absolutely no disk group names called this already: [root@vader ~]# lvscan ACTIVE '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00' [4.34 GB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01' [512.00 MB] inherit I've used SnapDrive for HPUX before with no problems using LVM. I'm aware that CentOS isn't officially supported, but I was hoping it would work since RHEL is supported (and it's only a test environment anyway). Is there something I'm missing here? Upgrading Data OnTap

I would like to upgrade my filer from data ontap 7.1p1 to 7.1.2 and I just want to make sure I am doing it write. I plan on doing the following: 1. disable the cluster 2. mount the c$ share as a drive 3. run the 7.1.2 installer 4. reboot 5. repeat with the other cluster partner 6. enable the cluster. mounting snapshots

Hello, I am having the hardest time understanding fractional space reservations for volumes and lun space reservations. If I reduce fractional space reservations to a volume that contain luns, what happens to lun space reservations? Is there a way to throttle lun space reservations -- as far as I can tell it's just a check box in Filerview.... The main question I have is --- does setting fractional space reservation affect my ability to mount snapshots. I assume that mounting snapshots does not take any space since it's all read-only.... or am i wrong in assuming this? My assumption right now is that fractional space reserve is there if I ever need to mount a snapshot to be read/write --- am I dead wrong? Thanks, Steve

We had to reboot the filer after deleting the queued autosupports. Not a great solution, but it worked. Dirty Parity

*This is my second attempt to send this to the list. If it shows up twice, I apologize. We had a situation last year in which one of the aggregates on our R100 suffered dirty parity in one of its raid groups which forced us to take the filer down for several hours while we ran WAFL_Check on that aggregate. Given this, I have a few questions: 1. What is the likelihood of getting dirty parity? I assume the likelihood goes up dramatically on a box like the R100 given that the weekly RAID scrubs seldom if ever complete. 2. If this had occurred on a cluster, could we take one node down to run the WAFL_Check, while the other node continues to serve data from the other aggregates? 3. How many of you have encountered something like this and decided to go with SyncMirror to protect against such a thing? Thanks, --Carl

No one is stating that you cannot map users with LDAP - however, if the user names are not alike between unix and windows is the key. Reading the ONTAP documentation, you must specify the windowsaccount attribute and the unixaccount attribute. So long as these attributes match, then you should map - if they do not match, then there is no way to map. Why not set up a volume snapmirror now for weekend work for migration? (i.e. vol_old to vol_new) We use this quite successfully - then when the migration is on you only have the update to do... Maximum number of groups per user

Hi I am new to the list. I have been trying to get a definitive statement from NetApp about the maximum number of groups a user can belong to if we rely on the /etc/group and /etc/passwd files on the filer. The setup we have tested has CIFS clients (Windows2000) with the filer part of a workgroup. We rely on unix group permissions for access to data directories. We are not using any NFS, NIS, LDAP or NT domain - all local authentication etc. I have done some testing and it appears the limit is 32 (not a surprising number) but have not been able to get this confirmed. Has anyone tried/done this before? We are migrating from samba servers running on FreeBSD with modified kernels which allow users to be in thousands of groups (don't laugh; I don't want to go into the reasons) because this facilitates our companies working practices.
