You could try booting into Maintenance mode (ctrl+c during startup) and then selecting option 4a which is "initialize all disks and create a flexible root volume" or something similar (assuming it's ONTAP 7). Once this is done it will boot into ONTAP but this is not a full version, so you just need to do an ONTAP "upgrade" to it to get all the right files on there. Your config and licenses will be lost so you'll need to re-enter them. Hi all, Having just changed out our FAS250's for FAS270's, and utilised the old 250 as a shelf on the 270. I have been left with the processor and licenses for a FAS250. The question is, if I buy a DS14Mk2 shelf full of disks, and put the processor in the new shelf, how would I get this to become a filer once again as there will be no Root volume Does anyone know all the steps involved, or can someone point me in the right direction ? snap shots stop working

After making changes to snap schedule, snapshost are no longer working on the cluster. Veriosn: NetApp Release 7.1.1: #rsh netapp1 snap sched Volume vol0: 0 2 6@8,12,16,20 Volume vol1: 2 9 1@15 No new snap shots for 2 weeks. Manual snapshot creation work fine. Any ideas? Much appreciated. Thanks

reallocate experience?

Hi guys, Has anyone seen any issues with using the reallocate command in relation to a) increase in snap shot usage b) performance impact c) length of time to run the reallocation? I may have a requirement to reduce the raid group size option( currently 28 ) on an existing 12 disk aggregate to 16 and add additional disks, thus potentially creating the presence of 'hot disks' in the primary raid group which will have been increased from 12 to 16 disks. http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/ docs/ontap/rel70rc/html/ontap/cmdref/man1/na_reallocate.1.htm Any feedback on past experience would be useful. "Unable to send_ errno = No buffer space available" errors on F740

Greetings, fellow Toaster-ites. Hopefully this will distract you from the previous l1nux4411 "I'm 16 and Linux r00lz" troll-fest ... We've got a creaky old F740 running 6.3.1R1 that's performed yeoman duty for us for many years. All of a sudden it's having regular (at least once an hour) issues with "No buffer space available" errors that cause temporary NFS mount hiccup issues. I'm not sure how bad the situation is but it hasn't happened to us before (we also had our first panic on the F740 the other day, too) and more to the point, a reboot didn't fix the problem - it came right back shortly thereafter. Which is what worries me - a reboot should've fixed the issue, at least for awhile. I'm also troubled that there doesn't seem to be any tunable options parameter to increase the number of kernel buffers (or kernel buffer space in general) to deal with this issue. Has any other Toaster-ite run into this before? Here's the configuration and the error messages below. Linux on netapp filers

Installing linux on an awesome box like a 940 is pretty insane dude. As a server, you might find it underpowered. It's got 6g of memory, and 1.6 P4 Zeon processor (two I think). While you can get a modern Dell 1950 with a dual core Intel proc and 8g of ram for around 6k. Maybe you got a smokin' deal on the 940? Maybe you have no support, or any licenses on this box? I'm not sure you are going to get what you want out of this. A 940 is an awesome OnTap platform, for NFS block storage. As a platform for Linux or BSD, it might not be the best of choices. number of disks in an aggregate ?

Hi all, I wanted to ask the collective wisdom out there about how many disks to put in an aggregate. I have an F825 with 2 DS14 shelves, currently set up as 1 aggregate (so 28 disks in the aggregate), double parity, and 2 spares. I will be adding another DS14 shelf, identical disks as the other 2 shelves. My preference is to just extend the existing aggregate to 42 disks, and set up another volume for the new data that will be going on there - but I believe NetApp says that 28 disks is the max for an aggregate. So, question is - anyone out there using more than 28 (like 42 !) disks in an aggregate ? Is it possible ? recommended ? I thought that the more disks the better in an aggregate for performance reasons, but I thought I'd see what you all say ! Weird NFS need

So I figured I'd give the group a shot at this. I've got a client that wants to have 2 linux-based ftp/http servers, one in the LAN and one in the DMZ, share some data. NFS would be perfect. However- The security group will not allow server in the DMZ to access the LAN-based Netapp through the firewall for its NFS resource. Also, I cannot put an interface from the Netapp into the DMZ. They WILL allow it if it's encrypted. I saw WebNFS, does Netapp support some sort of NFS over HTTPS? or SSH? Alternatively, the client said that what would be allowed is if the two servers could share the same LUN- FC only, no iSCSI. Has anyone out there tried that before, what needs to be done on the linux side to make that happen? Thanks Glenn (the other one)

ONTAP supports IPSEC. That should work, but it will increase the CPU load on the filer. I don't think it's an issue for HTTP/FTP setups, but it might cause problems with heavy PPS environments. What I don't understand is if the data their sending is basically unencrypted (HTTP and FTP?!??!) why does the NFS component need to be super secure from "teh hax0rz."? Tools for managing filer content

Hey Toasterz; Are there any free software tools which might run on a filer's server host (whether Linux or Windoze) for managing content on a filer? I'm looking for something I can run, preferably as a cron job or a scheduled job. I'm envisioning something that will let me configure a "control file" list of names of files to look for on the filer, then the program would walk the shares and exports and tell me how much space is being taken up on the filer by each file type. All - thanks for the replies. The java method was the most interesting, but I couldn't get it to work consistently - some directories it would work on, but others it would claim that the directory didn't exist. I tried a few things, but could never get it to be reliable, so I punted on that. Nice to know about it, though ! For the record, I will probably end up using a VB script from Windows to accomplish what I need to do, since in our environment the Windows client can get to everything I need to get to, and I there are several that are on Gb networking, so the sizing will be faster. If not NetApp, then who ?

Hi Everyone, We are a long time NetApp shop here. We started with the 540 and have upgraded multiple times and are now at FAS940's. The time has come for us to upgrade again. We have been extremely happy with NetApp. The reliability, uptime, support, features, etc. have spoiled us for years. What I want to ask the community now is: has anyone else appeared on the stage that you are as happy with ? There are a lot of products that claim to have snapshots, NFS/CIFS, etc. But how reliable are they ? Has anyone that has been really happy with NetApps moved to any of the newer players and been as happy ? My motivation looking elsewhere is, of course, price. I admit, I have been slightly bitten by the cheap SATA file servers bug. Our current config is with all FC drives, but if you have enough disks, SATA seems to be close to the performance. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what NetApp's real competitors are ? Anyone have any stories to share with me about trying someone else (cheaper) ? Thanks, Paul Letta

sizing files and folders on a filer

I am looking for the "best" way to size certain folders and files on a NetApp filer. I get different numbers depending on whether I use Windows (2000) or Unix (Solaris 9). (I am "root" in both cases, and thus able to see all the files in a folder,etc). I am wondering if this is due to different block sizes used by those OSes - Windows uses 4K, and Solaris 512K, I think (!) So, my questions are : 1) what is WAFL's block size ? 2) what do you recommend for sizing folder and files that reside on the filer, but are not themselves qtrees (so the quota report won't work) ? 3) is there a "du" command on the filer itself that I"m missing ? Thanks for all the responses to this, I figured as much, but I was kinda hoping. Ultimately, it is not a big deal we will be growing this anyway, I just needed a little more space to allocate to a lun. iscsi vifs

Greetings: Currently, my ISCSI setup consist of a single mode vif on the NetApp side - this connects to a dedicated switch for the ISCSI traffic. I have active/passive clusters connected to this switch with dedicated NICs for ISCSI connectivity. On the server side, I run Snap Drive 4.1 and MS ISCSI Initiator. I would like to change this to the following. 1. Create two multimode vifs (each vif connecting to a separate switch - the switches would then be bridged) 2. Create a second level single mode vif consisting of the above two multimode VIFs - so only one vif is active at any one time. 3. The second level single mode vif will have the same IP address as it is now. If I make the above change, would this affect any of the currently mapped ISCSI connections? Do I need to re-map it through MS ISCSI initiator - IP addresses are not changing, would this cause any changes on the server side? Thanks, Darish.

More backstory, I made a mistake when I was trying grow my aggregate and I am seeing if I can change it. Essentially I have two shelves attached to a fas3020c filer. I had a aggregate(aggr0) which was set to 14 disks per raid group with 1 raid group using the disks from the 1st shelf. and then I have 4 disks in the second shelf. I wanted to temporarily increase the size of my aggregate so I increased the size and I expanded aggr0 onto the disks from the second shelf. But then I realized I didn't change the raid group size. so now I have 1 raid group with 14 disks using raid_dp and a second group with 3 disks using raid_dp and a spare. That means for the second raid group I have only added a total of 1 disk of space while using 3 drives. Snapmirror NTAP is at 20% constantly

Hi Guys, Any reason why CPU utilization on my snapmirror destination is always at 20%??? My production filer is much less than that. The Snapmirror only happens once per day. All other indicators seem idle.
