ndmpcopy and the newb Part II

Me again. When last we met I had a question about ndmpcopy - the copy went over well - files moved, the application that needs those files had a brief outage and all is well. I'm cleaning up the source volume - 'best practice' here is to remove files, remove snapshots and shrink the volume to 10g should we need a place to stash files. Removed the files, done. Removed the snapshots, done. Except for one guy that is being stubborn. The fellow with just a bit more experience with these than I do claims it must be because a server is still has that volume mounted and if I showmount that appears to be the case .. except the remote host in question no longer has that mounted - going by 'df -k' and /etc/vfstab. Now - a very long time ago - back in November of 06 - this volume was cloned and mounted so that an application under development could see the contents of the file store there. Is there something special - clearly there might be - about clones and mirrors that require an extra effort to delete a snapshot? Or am I doing something fundamentally wrong? I would not ordinarily go the newb well twice in a fortnight but I've been looking at this since early this morning and I'm no closer to figuring out WHY than when I started. Thanks. FAS3020 + FC LTO Gen 3.

Toasters! I have been trying for a couple weeks now to get my 3020 to properly see an LTO Gen 3 FC Tape drive. Environment: FAS3020, attached to Cisco MDS Fabric with ISL between two MDS9509s attached to HP Ultrium 3 LTO3 Drive. The LTO3 drive is installed in a StorageTek L700 Library which fiber channel robotic control. The backup environment is Symantec Netbackup. There is no extra HBA cards in the FAS3020, so we are using the onboard card. The Good: I can manually load a tape, the Filer sees the drive/tape. The Bad: The system always reports back that the tape is a LTO1 200GB read only. Naturally I tried several other tape drives and tape media, all with the same problem. I have 2 FAS940s that do not have any issue talking to LTO3 Tape drives. I've downloaded the latest device configuration files from now, I've been working with the technical support at netapp. My best assumption is that the drives are in the wrong block mode. Add two disks to an aggregate and reallocate

Hi toasters, can we rise aggr-size from e.g. 14 to 16 add two disks and do an reallocate without having to much performance impact because of "hot-disks"?!?! Has anybody made experiences with this? rdgs Jochen

Thanks for the responses but I am still confused about how the paths are determined. For example, lets say I have a FAS6030C (Node1 and Node2) running Data Ontap 7.2.1 with each head having 2 target ports each in a switched fibre fabric. In this fabric, I have a Windows host (running Snapdrive 4.2.1 and DSM 3.0) with a dual port fibre card. I create lun0 on Node1 from the Windows host via Snapdrive. How is the path chosen by the FAS6030C? I am trying to find additional information on how Netapp single_image mode works in a clustered environment as it pertains to pathing. Single_image mode pulls all the WWPN's from the Netapp cluster and presents it to the SAN as one WWNN. What I would like to know is how paths are determined from hosts to cluster nodes if no target portals are defined?

ndmpcopy and the newb

Hi, I'm new to managing Filers - I hope you'll put up with a newb question or two while I get on my feet. I've not been left entirely on my own here - but there are two unix guys here to mange a lot of servers where before there were four of us .. and the two guys who had done this job previously are the ones who left for greener pastures. So I've got a mature and reasonably stable infrastructue to work with at least. My first task is to move a volume from a busy filer to a non-busy filer. 1. The preferred method (for our shop, I'm told) is to use ndmpcopy I've got shell access to both filers, they can ping each other. I've got a desination volume created. ndmpcopy [options] source destination The source and destination specify a hostname (no problem) and aboslute pathname of the directory to be used for the transfer. Does this mean the absolute pathname of the source/destination volume? Or .. something else? If the former how do I find that? 2. Unless there is a better way to do this? I can of course mount both volumes via NFS from a 3rd host and simply move then but (from what I've read) ndmpcoy is a better choice. Brian Dunbar Plexus brian.dunbar(a)plexus.com

Hi toasters, does anybody know if we can use 9um LC-LC cables to connect a shelf with an ESH2 to a filer, or are 50um LC-LC cables the only supported ones? Replacing an FAS960 with a 3070

All, We'll be replacing a 960 with a new 3070 soon and am wondering if anyone's gone through this upgrade path yet. Our current plan is to install 7.2.2 for the 3070 (which is an x86_64 based OS) with the 960 still up, run "download" to put the boot stuff on the disks, then edit the /etc/rc file to change the device names for the network interface, then shutdown and swap the heads. Hopefully the 3070 will just come up and hum right along. You could try booting into Maintenance mode (ctrl+c during startup) and then selecting option 4a which is "initialize all disks and create a flexible root volume" or something similar (assuming it's ONTAP 7). Once this is done it will boot into ONTAP but this is not a full version, so you just need to do an ONTAP "upgrade" to it to get all the right files on there. Your config and licenses will be lost so you'll need to re-enter them. Hi all, Having just changed out our FAS250's for FAS270's, and utilised the old 250 as a shelf on the 270. I have been left with the processor and licenses for a FAS250. The question is, if I buy a DS14Mk2 shelf full of disks, and put the processor in the new shelf, how would I get this to become a filer once again as there will be no Root volume Does anyone know all the steps involved, or can someone point me in the right direction ? After making changes to snap schedule, snapshost are no longer working on the cluster. Veriosn: NetApp Release 7.1.1: #rsh netapp1 snap sched Volume vol0: 0 2 6@8,12,16,20 Volume vol1: 2 9 1@15 No new snap shots for 2 weeks. Manual snapshot creation work fine. Any ideas? Much appreciated. Thanks

reallocate experience?

Hi guys, Has anyone seen any issues with using the reallocate command in relation to a) increase in snap shot usage b) performance impact c) length of time to run the reallocation? I may have a requirement to reduce the raid group size option( currently 28 ) on an existing 12 disk aggregate to 16 and add additional disks, thus potentially creating the presence of 'hot disks' in the primary raid group which will have been increased from 12 to 16 disks. http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/ docs/ontap/rel70rc/html/ontap/cmdref/man1/na_reallocate.1.htm Any feedback on past experience would be useful. "Unable to send_ errno = No buffer space available" errors on F740

Greetings, fellow Toaster-ites. Hopefully this will distract you from the previous l1nux4411 "I'm 16 and Linux r00lz" troll-fest ... We've got a creaky old F740 running 6.3.1R1 that's performed yeoman duty for us for many years. All of a sudden it's having regular (at least once an hour) issues with "No buffer space available" errors that cause temporary NFS mount hiccup issues. I'm not sure how bad the situation is but it hasn't happened to us before (we also had our first panic on the F740 the other day, too) and more to the point, a reboot didn't fix the problem - it came right back shortly thereafter. Which is what worries me - a reboot should've fixed the issue, at least for awhile. I'm also troubled that there doesn't seem to be any tunable options parameter to increase the number of kernel buffers (or kernel buffer space in general) to deal with this issue. Has any other Toaster-ite run into this before? Here's the configuration and the error messages below. I think our support contract may have expired (our F740 is obviously EOL'ed and frankly, we had expected to be completely moved off of it and onto our SAN by now, but the wheels of industry grind slowly around here), so I don't know what the status is of that. We keep getting the NetApp Field Alerts, but I don't know if that indicates we still have a valid service contract or not. (And the guy who used to handle our NOW account left and moved down to Costa Rica) Other than knowing that ONTAP 7.x doesn't run on an F740, what's the latest version that does? Linux on netapp filers

Installing linux on an awesome box like a 940 is pretty insane dude. As a server, you might find it underpowered. It's got 6g of memory, and 1.6 P4 Zeon processor (two I think). While you can get a modern Dell 1950 with a dual core Intel proc and 8g of ram for around 6k. Maybe you got a smokin' deal on the 940? Maybe you have no support, or any licenses on this box? I'm not sure you are going to get what you want out of this. A 940 is an awesome OnTap platform, for NFS block storage. As a platform for Linux or BSD, it might not be the best of choices. number of disks in an aggregate ?

Hi all, I wanted to ask the collective wisdom out there about how many disks to put in an aggregate. I have an F825 with 2 DS14 shelves, currently set up as 1 aggregate (so 28 disks in the aggregate), double parity, and 2 spares. I will be adding another DS14 shelf, identical disks as the other 2 shelves. My preference is to just extend the existing aggregate to 42 disks, and set up another volume for the new data that will be going on there - but I believe NetApp says that 28 disks is the max for an aggregate. So, question is - anyone out there using more than 28 (like 42 !) disks in an aggregate ? Is it possible ? recommended ? I thought that the more disks the better in an aggregate for performance reasons, but I thought I'd see what you all say ! Weird NFS need

So I figured I'd give the group a shot at this. I've got a client that wants to have 2 linux-based ftp/http servers, one in the LAN and one in the DMZ, share some data. NFS would be perfect. However- The security group will not allow server in the DMZ to access the LAN-based Netapp through the firewall for its NFS resource. Also, I cannot put an interface from the Netapp into the DMZ. They WILL allow it if it's encrypted. I saw WebNFS, does Netapp support some sort of NFS over HTTPS? or SSH? Alternatively, the client said that what would be allowed is if the two servers could share the same LUN- FC only, no iSCSI. Has anyone out there tried that before, what needs to be done on the linux side to make that happen? Thanks Glenn (the other one)
