Right, but if you do that, you have to put all of non-qtreed data into a qtree on the destination. You can't do <dest_file>:/vol/<vol_name>/- as the destination. It won't work. You have to specify an actual qtree as the destination which means your data won't be in the root of the volume on the destination. Is there a way to make NetApp snapmirror updates run in serial? In other words, if I setup 3 snapmirror relationships, how can I get the first one to run, and then run the second one as soon as the first finishes, and then the third in the same fashion? You can have more that one shelf on the 270, so you might want to buy a cheap second hand shelf from zerowait, and attach that to the existing filer, migrate the data. Not too hard to do. Mac OS AFP support?

I've read TR 3472 "Integrating Mac(r) OS and NetApp Storage<http://www.netapp.com/library/tr/3472.pdf>" http://www.netapp.com/library/tr/3472.pdf and am aware of Thursby Software's DAVE: http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html, which is of course >$100/seat, depending on number of seats purchased. I would like to know if there is any plans to support AFP natively in Ontap? Has anyone found any other solution to allow for multiplatform (for example PC's and Macs) use of the filer without having to worry about the data fork/resource fork issues? Hi, We have the following situation: A 3020c with 3 FC shelves (with 144G disks), and 2 SATA shelves. one head has the FC ones, the other ownes the SATA ones. For some reason 2 of the FC shelves are only half-filled and we would like to buy larger FC disks. *) is it possible to intermix different sized disks in one aggregate? (i think so) *) is it possible to intermix different sized disks in one shelf? eg. 7 144G disks and 7 larger disks in one shelf. i dont think so, without loosing the extra space. at least in the past this was not possible with older versions of ontap, if i read the older posts correctly. *) is it possible to move 7 disks from one shelf to the other half-filled shelf without data loss and interruption? then i would have 2 full shelves and one empty shelf and could ad the new disks to that empty shelf (and the same aggregate). yours josef -- MfG Josef Radinger it-services Medizinische Universitaet Innsbruck

Using Subinacl for CIFS ACL changes

Hi, We are attempting to make alterations to our file and directory ACLs using the microsoft utility Subinacl.exe. All attempts to use this utility under an account which has anything less than Administrative status on the Filer fail. For example running the following command subinacl /subdirectories \\sharesfiler\adm$ <file://sharesfiler/adm$> /display - with an account which has Power User & Backup Operator group membership on the Filer returns an error message - CreateFile Error : 1314 A required privilege is not held by the client. The account the command is being run under has both Full Control on the share and the ACL. If we use other MS utilities to perform the same function such as cacls, xcalcs or the windows GUI we can view and alter all ACLs without the need to grant the account Administative status. This implies that the access permissions are sufficient and therefore there is something subinacl is doing that is different to other tools designed for the same purpose. Upgrading the account priveleges to Administrator overcomes this problem but this is not an option except in our test environment. This behaviour is consistant on Ontap 6.5.7, 7.0.5, 7.0.6 and 7.2.2 implying that its not a release bug. Has anyone else come across this behaviour before or have any idea what subinacl is doing that the other tools do not? Your assistance will be appreciated. rgds, Oisin

A-SIS (NetApp De-Duplication)

Hello *, we are in the process of consolidating several NetApp filers and NearStore systems onto a single FAS30x0HA system. The system's main function is to serve primary data (part from FCAL disks, part from SATA disks), it's secondary function is to act as the NearStore system for a second site, storing the copy of the other site's data on SATA disks. Now we would like to try A-SIS to reduce the required physical storage. It looks as if in order to add A-SIS (a_sis license), I also need to install the NearStore license. Now my concern is, that by giving the system a NearStore personality I might impact the system's primary role - serving primary storage data to users. Has anyone experience with how a system changes when the NearStore licenses is enabled? Any negative impact for serving data to users? Is the NearStore personality activated by installing the nearstore license, or could we install the nearstore and a_sis license, but keep the nearstore personality deactivated? For data that we volume SnapMirror, would we need an A-SIS license on both sides - source and target system? Will the volume SnapMirror transfer less data (assuming that A-SIS de-dupe of data saved some of the required data blocks)? yes?!) Any other experience (good or bad) or concerns when using A-SIS? Any reason to not use it on all (home directory type data) volumes? Any limitation encountered? Hi Roger, Also a posible setup: the source is on a regular FAS system without nearstore personality and asis, but for DR you use qtree snapmirror to a nearstore. Your can turn on asis only on the destination. . You don't save space on the source, but you save a lot on the destination site. How to reinstate "quota logmsg" settings after a reboot

ONTAP 7.1.2 (and earlier versions) doesn't preserve "quota logmsg" settings over a reboot. There's a bug recorded for this (168726) at NOW, but it's only fixed in various 7.2.x releases, which I can't go to because I am stuck on an F8xx series filer :-( I tried putting an appropriate "quota logmsg" command at the end of /etc/rc (after "savecore"), but this didn't work for some reason. There's nothing in /etc/messages or /etc/log/auditlog that indicates it even tried to obey it. Any ideas? -- Chris Thompson Email: cet1(a)cam.ac.uk

Hi Steven I don't think Windows can mount NTFS read-only. You need to either break the mirror or FlexClone the dest vol. If using QSM, a LUN clone might work, but I haven't tried it. If you FlexClone, you should create a separate snapshot on the source to use as the baseline. If you use one of the SnapMirror snapshots, it could break SnapMirror (or so I've seen - others have said it depends on which SM snap you use). We are working on a project that is housed in two separate buildings for disaster recovery. In each building we have a Windows server, a FAS270 filer and a FC SAN switch. The switches are not directly connected to each other, but we have long fibre runs so that each Windows server is connected to both switches. Each filer is connected to just its local FC switch. (This is a limitation of the FAS270, which has only one FC SAN port.) One filer is primary and the other is backup. On the primary filer I have a large volume containing a large LUN and this volume is being snapmirrored (synchronous) to the backup filer over ethernet. Both Windows servers can "see" both LUNs. We are using Windows clustering so that if the primary Windows server fails, the backup server will take over, using the primary LUN. If the primary netapp (or switch) fails, then we will need to manually intervene to cut over to the backup filer and LUN. So here is my question (at last). Is it possible to access both the primary LUN and the read only backup LUN on a Windows server? Windows seems to be confused by the read only LUN and I am seeing errors on the backup filer saying that Windows is trying to write to the LUN. I'm not a Windows guy, but is there any way to look at the files on the read only LUN from Windows? This isn't necessary for normal operations, I'm just curious. CIFS shares presentation to users

Hello, We we getting ready to consolidate several older filers onto a single FAS3040. Each of these older filers had several CIFS shares exposed. My users are used to going to the Run box in windows and typing \\filerA to get filersA's shares and \\filerB to get filer B's shares and so on. But now there is just \\Newfiler. This produces a list of all the CIFS shares that used to be on several different filers. Is there a way to group several cifs shares together and present them in a folder, or another share ? I would like to be able to go to \\NewFiler, and get a window that has a few folders, each of which holds several shares. I don't think this can be done, but I thought I would ask here anyways. Snapshot delete

Hi Toasters List, we create manually snapshots to make backups if we deploy new software releases. Now I want to delete automatically all snapshots older than 6 hours, because of special restrictions. I read the manual about snap autodelete but I cant find an option. The original problem was the lack of a means to extend existing VMFS LUNs through ESX without an extent and or downtime. The idea was to use NetApp thin provisioning as a way to offer up a large disk to ESX without the need to back that up with real disks, as a way to monitor real disk usage we created a hard volume and monitor with df the real use of disk against a hard limit (being the volume). So a 1 TB Lun (thin) was created inside a 200 GB (hard) volume, subsequently we wanted to keep track of ESX 3's usage through controlling the size of the VMDK files we would create. As this environment hosts desktops and was a testing ground at first there were a whole bunch of VMDK being created and destroyed. The situation we end up with is VMware thinking it has 60 GB in use of a 1 TB LUN while NetApp reports 180 GB in use of 200 GB (being the hard limit at this time). Basically the question becomes whether we can force ESX to actually reuse any of the [netapp in use] - [real use according to ESX] = 130 GB of space. Probably we need to clean up and start over with a new clean LUN, which we could then either hard provision and forget about thin provisioning altogether, because in our scenario it is no help. A broader question becomes were we went wrong? Our situation seems to suggest that we waste a whole lot of disk space - which VMware wont reuse on its own, and which NetApp can't touch (how would it know it was now freed up space) In that sense thin provisioning is just a space waster in an environment with VMDK's being destroyed and recreated from scratch. Of course we could always go flexcloning... but that would force netapp world on a whole lot of admins. Hi, It's obvious that a multitier NetApp solution is the best way to go ;-) But, an alternative would be using NDMP, and NetBackup is in that sense a very good choice. This way you can dump the snapshots on tape. In terms of tape connectivity you have different option: direct into your NetApp, into a fabric or over ip. NetApp and NetBackup

Hi Everyone, We have not long had our FAS3020's, and have just purchased NetBackup to start putting snapshots to tape. NBU was chosen because of its Advanced Client's NetApp integration (and because our NetApp reps recommended it!). We're struggling to get the whole thing talking, and the Symantec consultants on site are struggling as well. Has anyone here implemented a similar configuration before, and would be able to let on any tips/traps/hints picked up along the way??? Or anyone know of any online resources that might help? (NOW doco focuses on Oracle implementations using NetBackup). A bit of background would help I guess - We're running clustered 3020C's, with about a dozen hosts all attached via iSCSI. We have a mix of Exchange 2007, SQL 2005 (both currently using SnapManager to schedule snapshots), plus some standalone infrastructure servers (using snapdrive and the cli the schedule snapshots).
