filer to SCSI-attached tape drive performance

filer gurus -- got a question about tape drive performance, when directly attached to the filer (via SCSI). We have an F825 (soon to upgraded, we hope !) to which we've attached both an LTO-2 and LTO-3 8-tape library unit (these are from Dell, just FYI). The LTO-3 is a recent acquisition, and so we thought we'd run a few tests, to confirm that the LTO-3 drive is "faster". Well, it isn't - at least doesn't appear to be, based on an overnight full backup of the filer. Now, I know there are a lot of things to watch out for when making tests like this, but I though I'd check with the group here to see if anyone knows... - is there a way to tell what the data rate to the tape drive is from the filer, over the SCSI bus ? I'm looking for more of an instantaneous measurement, rather than the overall average of (amount of data moved / time it took). - anyone else played around with this (ie, attempting to measure the data throughput from filer to SCSI attached tape drive) ? If so, what did you try, and what conclusions did you reach ? Thanks much for your replies and time ! You eventy need to pull the enclosure services drives and make the loop unstable. It is easy to test, but individual circumstances can come into play. Upgrade FAS940 from Ontap 6.5.5 to 7.2.3 - any thing I should be aware of?

Hi, We are looking to upgrade our 2 FAS940's from Ontap 6.5.5 to Ontap 7.2.3. We currently use traditional volumes and want to migrate them all to Flex volumes once Ontap has been upgraded, at present we have approx 4TB of data however we do not have sufficient free space to create new aggregates and flex volumes to copy the data in to before destroying the original trad volumes and converting them to agregates therefore we have purchased 2 additional shelves which will give us space to do this (once the upgrades are finished we plan to attach one of the extra shelfs to each filer), the (abbreviated) plan for each filer is to: 1. shutdown all production services 2. break the synchronous snapmirrors 3. connect the shelves 4. upgrade the disk firmwares to the latest levels 5. upgrade to Ontap 7.2.3 6. create an aggregate on the 2 new shelves 7. as the data in the volumes are in qtrees QSM them to the new aggregate 8. once the data copy is complete, destroy the existing volumes and create the aggregates and new volumes 9. QSM the data back to the new aggregate 10. destroy the volumes on the new shelfs and remove them repeat steps 3 through 9 above for the other Filer remove one of the new shelves reinistialize the synchronous snapmirrors job done? One area I am not sure of is when do I upgrade the root volume (vol0), should this be done at step 6 above?, if so should I just create a new volume called for example vol0_new, copy the contents of vol0 in to it and then rename the orig vol0 to vol0_orig and rename vol0_new to vol0 and then reboot the filer for it to the new volume up before starting step 7? Also does anyone have any rough guidelines on how long it would take to snapmirror 4TB to a new shelf(s)? I am relatively new to NetApp technologies so would appreciate it if you guys would have a look over the steps above and highlight things I may need to be aware of I would appreciate it. Ya, tried this out, and while it does remove them from the admin group, they can still add/remove shares from other volumes. We do have multistore licensed, so we are looking to go down that route. synchronous snapmirror on Ontap 7.2.3

Hi, I am looking to upgrade from Ontap 6.5 to Ontap 7.2.3 on our FAS 940's an R270's and heard that synchronous snapmirrors are not fully supported on aggregate volumes yet and will not be until Ontap 7.3, can any one confirm this? I have not done this recently so I was hoping someone on the list has. Basically I need to decomission a loop on an existing filer and migrate the shelves to another filer. Microsoft DFS participation and Virtual File Manager

Hello All, I¹ve seen some posts recently talking about using the filer to participate in a DFS schema. I asked NetApp support if a filer could participate in MS DFS and was told no, and referred to Virtual File Manager which seems to replace the DFS schema not allow the filer to participate. What is required from a NetApp storage perspective to participate in MS DFS? Also does anyone have familiarity with VFM and whether if has any advantages over VFM? cannot mount snapshots

Has anyone come across snapshots that could not be mounted by snapdrive 4.2.1? I currently have a case open with support, but this is bugging the life out of me... My current scenario is a windows 2003 sp2 server with 2 LUN's, one for a scientific application called waters empower (D:) and the other for the oracle database that is associated with it (E:). A backup script of the scientific application runs nightly and calls a script that creates a snapshot while the database is in hot backup mode. All of this seems fine and dandy until I try to mount the snapshot to backup the contents to tape. Using sdcli I should be able to execute the following command via a script to mount the snapshot in preparation for writing it to tape: sdcli snap mount -k d -s snap0 -d y I have done some testing in which I tried to mount these snapshots from a remote server running snapdrive 4.2.1 as well and it was also unsuccessful. I also created a separate lun in which I took some snapshots of and I was able to mount it (this eliminates a problem with snapdrive on the machine and means to me that there is something happening to the snapshots that make them unmountable.) What can I look for to see what is wrong with my snapshots? Snap list shows them to be normal... Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm trying to get the DFM output to compute for an aggregate that contains both non-mirrored(space guaranteed=yes) and mirrored(space guaranteed=no) volumes. The aggregate used space is 1541 in the .csv file, but using KB9300 from the NOW site, I compute it as 1962. Where am I going wrong? Thanks, --Carl

Netapp, OS X and CIFS

We have problems configuring for CIFS-file sharing against OS X clients. Domain controllers are Win 2003, OS X clients are 10.4.10, NetApp are FAS3050 running 7.2.3P2 and 7.0.5. In order to run cifs setup, we had to turn off netbios over tcp on the filers (if not, the filer could not communicate with the DC's). We use AD domain authentication. Now, windows-clients are able to connect to the filer, but OS X clients, which are not able to use SMB over TCP, are not able to connect. We can turn on netbios over tcp on the filer, this enables OS X clients to connect, if they use kerberos for authentication (which is perfectly acceptable). However, the filer will loose its connection with the DC (as reported by cifs testdc), and I have a feeling that this is not the correct way to configure this. So what is the recommended way to configure netapps for CIFS-file sharing in a mixed OS X and windows environment? weird cifs problem

Hi toasters, i have a weird cifs problem. We have a FAS6070 serving 350gb cifs space to several clients. The filer is about 50% CPU load and stats for the volume look great at all (response times are about 1ms). But the problem is once a user adds this share as an additional drive on his Windows XP the whole systems seems to get slow. I have done some tracing with wireshark and found out that the filer is responding very fast (always about 1ms or less like stats on the filer show as well) but after a request finished the client waits for about 14-70 ms for sending the next request. This seems to be some kind of client prob, but this can only be seen for that specific filer. When using another filer everything works as it is ought to. Has anybody ideas on that?? Rgds Jochen

Thanks for all the comments. The comments came from a vendor who can't do dedupe, pointer based snapshots, flex clones, etc so they pull out the F(ear) U(ncertainity) and D(oubt) sales tool which says: if you can't beat it throw in something from left field and act as if it is a big deal.

Hi Scott, Very difficult question. The only thing what I can see is that you create 2 'root' shares on the 2 volumes. Than you create 2 DFS (distribute filesystem service from microsoft) trees (it's possible that you need two different windowsservers to separate the access control). Each department has full control on their dfs tree. They can create new shares in dfs, and use always the one root share on the filer as mount-path combined with the correct directories. It's a 'crazy' idea, but I think this must work. HTTPS access only to FilerView

Has anyone had any luck restricting FilerView to *only* https/SSL? Appears that enabling SSL allows https browsing, but does not restrict it to only https, as http is still allowed. Options httpd allow to restrict to certain workstations yes, but appears there's no way to configure it such that only https is allowed, and http browsing will return 404 or something like that. Any ideas? Thanks. luns cannot be backup via backup exec

hello everybody we have several luns that cannot be backued up from veritas backup exec. These luns are mounted via cifs and had initally security style unix, that recently changed to ntfs (before starting backup proccess), therfore we cannot change the lun share from "none" to"read" in order to make them capable to be backed up (the command returns "read only file system"). Plz note that these luns are snapvault destination (no snapvault destination is running during the backup proccess). Has anyone any knowledge or a workaround in how to make the lun share "read" , and what else needs to be done , to be able to backup the luns thnks in advance John

Just a thought, but the fact that its snapmirror destination its read only, there for backup program can't flip the archive attribute.
