Exports of deep subdirs

Hey Toasters… In 7-mode systems, I have some exports down in the subdirectory levels. Top is a volume. Dir1 and dir2 are Qtrees /top -sec=sys,rw=client1,client2 /top/dir1 –sec=sys,rw=client3 /top/dir2 –sec=sys,rw=client4 /top/dir2/host /host5 –sec=sys,rw=client5 /top/dir2/host/host6 –sec=sys,rw=client6 I know I can have different export policies on /top and one each qtree. Is making the directories “host5” and “host6” above completely separate volumes and mounting them via junction paths under ‘host’ really the only way to give them their own export policy? My goal here is that client5 can mount only /top/dir/hosts/host5 and client6 can mount only /top/dir/hosts/host6. But client1,2 can mount /top and be able to cd down the tree to see both host5 and host6 directories. It seems to me that being able to export arbitrary directories is kind of a fundamental feature of NFS.. It’s hard to imagine that it won’t do that and they can still call it an “NFS server” I’m new to cdot.. so thought I would ask what others are doing. Thanks.

HP-UX NFSv3 and ONTAP

I have a client that has an old HP-UX (11.23) server that currently has FC mounts to an even older CX3. It has already been ruled out on moving this workload to FCP on their ONTAP cluster (9.6P3) as the system is outside of the IMT. What I am proposing to them is moving this workload over to NFS and see if it would meet the very low application requirements. The main workload is an Oracle 8i (8.17) database that has extremely low transactions. My question is are there any gotchas or specific settings that should be employed regarding NFS mounts and HPUX? I have reviewed TR-4067 (quickly) and KB and the two items that stuck out (qtree exports and NFSv4) are items that I was not proposing on using. Anything else to be aware of? Automated vs Manual NDU

Toasters, What's your preference for non-disruptively upgrading a switch based ONTAP 9 cluster - automated NDU or manual (rolling) NDU? Happy to hear of both positive and negative experiences, if any. The cluster in question consists of 3 HA pairs so the automated upgrade will default to rolling. The general recommendation is to use the automated procedure but there are concerns about lack of control, especially in the event of issues. Each HA pair in the cluster hosts critical prod workloads. No access to a test cluster so there isn't much opportunity to build confidence in the automated procedure ahead of time. I am aware of the ability to pause the automated upgrade. Leaning toward manual at the moment due to lack of exposure to the automated process. Cheers, Phil

DFS-R is not supported. ONTAP can be a DFS-R target, but not in a DFS-R setup. For SMB access across sites in ONTAP, your options are: - Third party software, such as Peer - If this is in the cloud, you can use Talon Software (as covered in this podcast: https://soundcloud.com/techontap_podcast/episode-233-netapp-acquires-talon-…) - if you can hold off for a bit, a future release will support SMB FlexCache. Hi, According to the latest docs for ONTAP, “Logging of NT File System (NTFS) events in the change journal” is not supported with CIFS. Does this prevent netapp shares from being used as target folders for DFS replication?

hardware or software based disk ownership?

Hello all, I sure do have a lot of questions lately, I'm hoping to consolidate two aggregates into one for better space use, knowing that we might lose some performance. We're currently running two SVMs, each with its own aggregate, one one each node of a FAS8020 cluster running 9.1P6 (I know, I know). I inherited ownership of this cluster and didn't set it up. When I try to add a new volume to one SVM I can only see one aggregate but I'd like to put that volume on the other aggr. How can I tell if I'm running HW or SW based ownership? To confirm, if I was running SW based should I be able to use either aggr on either SVM? And last, is there any way to change from HW to SW without tearing it all up? Randy

We're changing our layouts and it would make functional sense to have a consistent naming scheme include an existing aggregate. Is there any impact from renaming an aggregate other than a new display name? Randy

Also watch out for the constituent member ( volumes under the covers ) count - I find the "default" is too high sometimes for the solution I am looking for. fstab nfsv3 mount favorites?

Hi, It’s been a number of years since I worked in a Linux/NFS shop, so while I search for my old fstab mount options for a one-off project, does anyone have their go-to fstab nfsv3 mount options handy? The exported volume is on an ONTAP 9.6 cluster if it matters.
