SAS controller limitations.

Greetings, A while back there was a known issue with the SAS controller. Each chip that controlled 2 ports would only address 128 devices. That included shelf controllers so technically 5 ds2246 shelves would exceed the limit and could cause some slowness. I was told that they changed this behavior in 8.1 and possibly upgrading the firmware, so that it only kept active devices in the list. I was told those devices would be removed when not active and so there was no need to keep the smaller shelf limit. Is this the case, or do I still need to try to limit each chip to 5 shelves or less? I'm running 8.1.2P4 and the cards are running 01.11.00.00. Oracle access and backups

Greetings, My Oracle experience with and without NetApp has largely been non-existent. Please bear with me on this. All of our current DBs are on dedicated servers with locally attached storage. One of our groups has a 6280 cluster running 8.1.2P4 7-mode. They want to look into using iscsi to a new 11.2 Oracle server. The cluster can get pretty busy at times so I'm not sure Oracle NFS will work in this case. The questions are largely about backups and DR. I'm curious about how most people choose to back this up and how to recover for that solution. I know there are lun copy options, snapmanager/flex clone options, etc. We're very open to manual scripting and custom solutions. Backups would most likely go to a NearStore, and the DR would be a second server connected via iscsi also. OnCommand Balance Question

Running OnCommand Balance 4.1.0.2.9 Not an expert with it tool and looking for a "quick" fix here, though obviously reading through the manual more thoroughly is on the TODO list (Google search didn't net me anything). Overnight, have had some growth on one of our VMware volumes (NFS attached volume). System Management Console shows that heavier than normal write activity began overnight and is ongoing. Balance shows the same, but I'd like to see which VM living on the volume is responsible for the writes. I'm not seeing an obvious way to do this in Balance, however. At the volume level view there's a Servers tab, but it doesn't show anything helpful. The Capacity tab shows trend information for the entire volume only. On the Servers tab I can click on individual "servers" (VM's) and view some information about disk activity (though it doesn't break it out into read/write), but this is a bit on the tedious side. Was hoping Balance would make it easy to track down the source of this sort of activity. Any ideas? Ray

Migrating from copper gigabit to fiber 10Gb

Hi, I'm currently planning to migrate my FAS2240's ggiabit links to 10Gb links. Since the 10Gb cards are already in place in the filers, the physical part is already done. I'm currently using the 4 Gb links (e0a -> e0d) as a LACP connection to a stack of juniper devices. Providing the config is OK on the switch, what woule be the best way to migrate with the minimum downtime ? I'm planning the following (on each node of the box): - make sure config on the 10Gb ports of the switch is good - plug fibers on both sides - login via console port - cf disable - ifgrp destroy LAG_CIFS - ifgrp create lacp LAG_CIFS -b ip e1a e1b - cf enable Would it do the job ? Would I need to restart services like iSCSI/NFS/CIFS/.... ? Thanks

Migrating from 7-Mode to CDOT without downtime

Hey there, we're getting a new FAS8020 during the next weeks and my task now is to move all the data on our current 7 mode filers onto the new one. I've already made non disruptive plans for the VMware datastores and all the NFS shares, so that's not an issue anymore - but I'm wondering about how to non disruptively migrate my iSCSI LUNs presented to my microsoft failover clusters. Any ideas on that? I'm thinking about setting up some kind of software RAID 1 (if that's supported) on the host side with the new and the old LUNs like we did back in the good old days when we used Veritas volume manager on EMC boxes, but I'm not sure if that's a supported scenario. I'm pretty sure some of you have gone through that already so I would be thankful for any ideas in that regard. heartbleed -- Netapp SSL

Greetings, Looking for a quick way to determine what versions of SSL are in use in DOT (7-mode). I could not find anything specific. http://heartbleed.com/ I assume the version of SSL is probably not 1.0.1 - 1.0.1f on the Netapps. Anyone have any ideas where to look?

OSSV server database cleanup

Greetings, I was hoping for a quick fix since it is Friday afternoon. If nothing works out I may open a call or just wipe everything out. We have OSSV3.0 running on a linux server. It is installed on / and filled up / today. I found a -checksums file dated today that is 30G. There is another one for the same date last month of the same size. No other checksums file is larger than 10G. The file system that backups up on the 11th of the month is smaller and has considerably fewer inodes in use than most others. There is no reason it should be 3x the size of any other checksums file. There are no current snapvault transfers running and I've stopped/started snapvault. I have several checksums files on dated when backups don't even run. I also found out that / is not backed up so I have no old backups of the database. Is there a way to do a purge or cleanup of the database? If not, I guess I'll just uninstall and start fresh. Unfortunately that is a baseline of 60+TB. How to force a particular access with NTFS permissions

Hi, We have a number of volumes on NetApp filers (OnTAP 8.1.2 7-mode) configured with NTFS permissions. The problem is that users, via their windows clients, sometimes set permissions so that administrators, including the backup software (which is in the "Backup Operators" group) cannot see data. Is there a way that I can add an ACE to all files and directories in a qtree without interfering with existing ACEs? I’ve tried using the storage-level security guard but this does not appear to allow you to add access, only limit it. If I set permissions via the fsecurity command it wipes out all previous ACLs and only puts in the ones in the configuration file I give it. Of course I cannot fix the permissions via a Windows client as my account (even though it is an administrator) does not have access. Thanks in advance! FCP switch / port info

Hi All, With OnTAP 8.x (afaik), it became possible to see what FC switch name / port number a filer is connected to on SAN: filer> fcp show adapters -v .. Switch Port: fc-corp-203:22 // fc-corp-203 - switch name // 22 - port number I assume a certain FCP request makes it possible and wonder if a similar tool is available on a Linux server (Im running CentOS mainly). Is anybody aware of such a tool / utility? Cheers, Vladimir

OT: Converged Infrastructure

Apologies if this is too off-topic. Still no SNIA sponsored list out there for general storage discussion that I'm aware of. :) This is more for the folks using their filers in tandem with VMware... Am curious how you toaster admins out there are reacting to all of the new-fangled converged options (Nutanix, Simplivity -- not so much the UCS/vBlock type stuff) out there? Dipping your toes in the water to experiment? Going all in with C-Mode and sticking with your NetApps plus traditional servers? Drinking the kool-aid and going converged all the way to simplify your life? A mix of both? No sales inquiries please! Thanks, Ray
