infinite volumes in the real world

admin access to ntfs permissions

Hi folks, I have run into some ntfs permission problems on a filer running 8.0.1 7-Mode. I am not a Windows domain admin, just the filer admin. I thought that I could map the share using the filer Administrator account like this: share: \\filer.virginia.edu\sharename user: filer.virginia.edu\Administrator I can login just fine, but this account apparently has no special admin privileges. I get permission denied when I try to access folders whose ntfs permissions I suspect are wrong. I also tried filer.virginia.edu\root but login fails. So does this mean that only Windows Domain admins can repair these permissions? And what about this filer option: wafl.nt_admin_priv_map_to_root Must this be "on" ? What do you do if someone revokes all access to a ntfs style folder? Is there any way for a filer admin who is not a Windows domain admin to get unrestricted access to all ntfs security style objects? Can a Windows domain admin even do this? I searched Netapp support but it just says to login as a user "with enough privilege" to change the permissions. Thanks for any help. We almost always use Unix security style.

nfs.authsys.extended_groups_ns.enable?

Hello All, Trying to work around the 16 group limitation of NFS v3 on our 8.1 vfiler and finding references to a "hidden" option "nfs.authsys.extended_groups_ns.enable" that will effectively disable group lookups via auth_sys/RPC and instead look to the filer's AD authentication for a user's group memberships. This is similar in spirit to Isilon's "mapuid" feature and "regular" NFS's -manage-gid switch. But I've tried in regular mode, priv set advanced and priv set diag, and I always get "No such option nfs.authsys.extended_groups_ns.enable" if I try to view or change the option. Am I missing some step to make this hidden double-secret-probationary option available? Randy

snapmirror destination volume is not growing after source

Folks, Please help I have snapmirror setup between 2 qtrees. netapp1:/vol/vol1/q1 --> netapp2/vol/vol1/q1 I was under impression that in 8.2 you can add space to source volume and destination will grow. When I add space or change maxfile on source, the destination remains the same Is my issue due to having just qtree snapmirror? Or I am missing something? fs_size_fixed=off

CPU usage and HA

I know that if a Filer is not busy serving data it will run background task at a higher priority that will use the spare CPU while the Filer is not under load. In an active/active config the Filer CPU shouldn't be over 50% on each controller as above this the Filer is not longer HA. My question is if a Filer is showing low latency and isn't busy but its CPU is at 50% on each controller is this an issue? I'm not clear if you have two controllers showing 40/50% CPU due to background tasks that isn't busy whether it will still be HA if one controller were to fail? stats list instances disk output format

Why does "stats list instances disk" show the disk instance name as what looks like hex but so far I have not been able to translate to anything meaningful. We have 2 3270 filers, each using a LACP portchannel over 2 1G interfaces to a CISCO 6500. When we enable LACP debugging, we get this. If our understanding of this is correct, there is a LACP packet every 30 seconds (active setting). If 3 are missed in a row, the netapp downs that leg of the portchannel. Later, a packet arrives and the netapp ups the leg of the portchannel. Does anybody with a deep understanding of this know why we get these messages and why it appears the netapp is uping and downing the interface and if this is serious. Any help appreciated. FAS3240c SAS Cabling Question

I have a FAS3240c that has been running for years. I noticed today, while putting in some new shelves, that the IOM modules in the last shelf of a stack of DS4243's are both cabled to the wrong nodes. Filer1 SAS port 3a goes to the circle port on IOM B instead of IOM A and visa versa. Do I have to take the entire cluster down to fix this? Thanks, --Carl
