[OT] General Purpose Storage Discussion

This list is great -- but obviously is NetApp centric. I'm wondering if any of you can recommend a mailing list or forum, with a similar level of participation and expertise, that's a bit more "general purpose" but still storage-centric. Something similar to the SAGE/LISA mailing lists for Systems Administration. Perhaps SNIA offers such discussion groups to its members? Thanks, Ray

Alternatives to DFM/Oncommand Core

We've recently been told that vFiler DR is not currently support with Oncommand Core. As cDOT doesn't have the concept of vFilers and from what I have read 5.2 for 7-mode is the last release of Oncommand Core I doubt this functionality will ever be added. We currently rely on vFiler DR to allow fast DR recovery but can't use Oncommand Core due to this limitation. I'm looking at alternatives to Oncommand Core. From past experience there is: Solarwinds Logicmonitor Various Nagios based solutions Does anyone have any other suggestions for monitoring Netapp Filers? ndmpd password error

Has anyone encountered this error before? filer> ndmpd password cvbackup Cannot generate NDMP password. filer> Fri Sep 27 17:12:40 PDT [filer:useradmin.unauthorized.user:warning]: User 'cvbackup' denied access - missing required capability: 'login-ndmp' This used to work, but we recently upgraded ONTAP to 8.1.2 P4 and am wondering if the upgrade may have broken this feature? Nothing has changed on the role, group, or user account "cvbackup" on the filer. I have verified that 'login-ndmp' capability exists on the role that is associated with the group, which is associated with the user. As a test I added the 'cvbackup' user into the default "Backup Operators" group which has the 'login-ndmp' role capability, but got the same results. Even tried running "ndmpd password administrator" and still got the same error message. Any thoughts? vol size not having any effect on volume

I recently attempted to expand a volume on one of our 2240's, but it seems to not have any effect on the free space. From the random reading I've done, it seems that having volumes and aggregates pushing >90% space utilization is not good in any case. Unfortunately the aggregate that this volume lives on is currently at 96% used (150G free), and the volume that I'm trying grow is at 95% used (124GB free). I attempted to grow the volume by 100G with the 'vol size +100g $volume_name' command. It took about 30s to come back to the prompt, but it did say that the volume has been resized to 100G larger than what df was showing. However, both df and df -A are not currently showing any change in size. Am I out of luck here? Is there any way to see a "queue" of things the controller is waiting to run or attempting to run? Feel free to school me on the badness of pushing anything close to 100% usage. This controller is sitting betweeen 70-95% CPU util as well. FAS2050 high CPU usage

Hi All, We're using FAS2050 in one of our branch offices to run VMware cluster over NFS. It turns out that this box runs on 100% CPU usage even when servicing 40MBs/1000IOPS (the max I've seen was 70MB/s). Which results in ridiculous latencies. I do realise that it's a Celeron CPU. I just want to double check with you guys, that it's something you'd expect from this box. Because these days 40MB/s seems to be too little even as a CIFS file server for a small team in a branch office. What is the minimum number of shelves for a FAS3220 HA pair?

Hi all, We are considering a FAS3220HA running clustered ONTAP (8.2) with a single DS4246 shelf. However, we were recently informed by our sales people that this is not possible, and that the minimum number of shelves for an HA pair running cDOT was two. Apparently each node needs it's own DS4246 for the cDOT operating system? Is it not possible to split the disks on a single shelf into two aggregates and assign one aggregate to each controller? Optimizing CIFS for WAN Access

Hi all; ONTAP 8.0/8.1 mix. Looking for best practices on optimizing seqential read (throughput) access via CIFS from WAN locations (up to 80ms latency). Here's what I have so far: - Enable SMB 2.0 on filers. - Increase CIFS TCP Window size to ~2MB (default seems to be 17520 bytes)? - Ensure clients at remote sites have either large TCP window sizes set or allow for TCP window scaling (clients are OSX). Obviously some sort of WAN acceleration appliance at the remote site could help as well. Anything I'm missing? Ray

Remote Power Off and Power On

All -- have a FAS2040C and DS2246 in a remote office where a scheduled power outage is planned for a 48 hour period (longer than UPS runtime at that location). We currently have no on-site staff available. Is it possible to cleanly shut down this device and bring it completely back up via the Service Processor module only? The main piece I'm unsure of is the DS2246. If it uncleanly loses power, will it come back on automatically or does something physically need to be done? Obviously for the controller we can log into the SP and do a 'system power on'. Maybe that command is smart enough to send a signal to the disk shelves as well? Any way to verify disk shelf power status remotely from the SP? Ray

Recovery options using SM

Greetings, I'm experimenting with DR recovery options on filers running 8.1.2P4, 7-mode. We have 10G connections on all the filers. I wanted to use SM since we get close to 1TB/hr transfer between primary and secondary for SM/SV relationships and we have licenses for this on everything. I can't figure how to get data from the SV secondary back to the primary volume using SM. It won't let me set up a SM on the secondary volume because it is a replication destination. I can't delete the baseline snapshot, and a snapvault stop can take 6 hours or more. Once it completes, the destination qtree is gone and SM won't work. I'm going to look into SnapRestore, but it will require some new licenses for some of the filers. Ndmpcopy seems unstable for 10TB volume transfers and is extremely slow and takes days. Rsync of a volume with 50m files takes days also, partly because the rsync system only has a 1G connection.
